“Unique in the world, totally worth paying a visit with a translator”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

I saw it several times and every time, I see new elements to the pamphlets that are written for each person. They are amusing, filled with folklore symbolism and delicious. Wish every cemetery in the world would have a story for each of the people there!

“Worth a stop, not a long visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

We have visited the Merry Cemetery this summer on a tour with some friends. It is worth a stop for a visit, yet not a trip solely there. You can also visit the Museum (the house of Ioan Patras - the founder of the Merry Cemetery) and a Monastery in the village, but all together do not take longer then half a day. The Cemetery has no translations in English and can be a bit boring after you get the general impression. We have eaten in a very good trout in a restaurant uphill in Sapanta, and that makes it a good lunch stop and then drive ahead!

“more interesting if you go with a guide”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

We visited the cemetery as part of a guided day trip and enjoyed the stop. It is very pretty. The interesting part though was having our guide translate the poems on the crosses.

“Odd and unique”

Unique. I've never seen anything like it elsewhere in the world. Do go and visit this bizarre and unusual place.

“Truly unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We spent at least an hour reading the grave markers (painted oak) and their fascinating look into villagers lives. I was lucky to be with people who speak and read both Romanian and Hungarian so I could enjoy the stories. Not all the stories are funny but they are certainly heartfelt. There is an admission fee per person plus a fee for taking pictures, about $10.00 for two people plus cameras but well worth it. The church is currently undergoing massive renovation but you can still see the beautiful paintings on the ceiling and the mosaics.
