“A place you'll never forget.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Whether you're looking for a fantastic place to acclimatize before any serious trekking in the Cordillera Blanca or appreciate the idea of having a comfortable bed, steaming hot water and delicious meals waiting for you after enjoying the multitude of alpine day hikes on offer right outside your door, this place is for you. The experience is unmatched in Peru and to my knowledge there is no other lodge closer to the boundary of Huascaran National Park. We would have loved to extend our three-night stay by a few nights had we been able to do so.

The Lodge is extremely remote and off the grid, but that's the beauty of the place and what makes it so unique. You can take your breakfast outside and enjoy the stunning views of Huandoy and Huscaran peaks on sunny days, and enjoy the sunset over the Cordillera Negra with a beer or a hot drink in hand after a long day of hiking. If you go don't miss the trek up to Laguna 69 - it's worth the effort.

The rooms were surprisingly comfortable and have great beds with down comforters that do a great job of insulating you from the high-altitude chill, water pressure was more than adequate and the three daily meals were delicious (the bread pudding was over the top) including the packed lunches with two sandwiches and plenty of goodies to keep you going throughout the day. All this at a place that puts a strong, genuine emphasis on sustainability.

Owner Charlie is a hardworking, affable and down to earth guy that strikes a perfect balance between socializing with the great group of guests his place tends to attract and demonstrating the level of professionalism necessary to provide everyone with an unmatched, top-notch experience. Not only is he a great host, he's also extremely knowledgeable when it comes to anything involving mountaineering in Peru so if that's your kind of thing he's a great resource for helping you make the most out of your trip.

Yes, the Llanganuco Mountain Lodge is expensive by Peruvian standards and was the most expensive place I stayed during my 17-day trip, but overall I felt it was by far and away the best value of any of them. Considering what you get (a high level of comfort in such a stunning remote place, three delicious meals per day, direct access to the attractions of the Cordillera Blanca without having to waste hours on transport from dusty and out-of-the-way Huaraz and not needing to pay for tours through overpriced agencies there) it's more than worth it. If you're only planning on splurging once, have this be the place. You won't be disappointed.

Fellow trekkers, we spent 4 wonderful days staying at the lodge and trekking the surrounding mountains and turquoise lakes. The location cannot be beat! Instead of driving 2 hours from Huaraz (part of the way very bumpy roads) this lodge is at the base of the mountains with beautiful hikes just out the door. It is based near the Huandoy and Huascaran National Parks. Charlie, our host, was great! Not only is he an experienced mountaineer ready to provide advice on trips, altitude, Inca ruins but quick to share a story that will keep you laughing. And the food (Thanks Tito) - the soups are wonderful, meals delicious and you will absolutely not go hungry. Plus comfortable beds with cozy down comforters, steaming hot water, roomy rooms... My husband and I stayed here the 3rd week of November and had a marvelous time and weather was good. It only rained on us one time briefly near the ice falls of Huandoy. If you are planning to trek then this is a great place for base camp or organizing a couple days out and returning here. You can enjoy the quietness of mountains, the amazing valley views, beautiful sunrises and sunsets and relax while eating breakfast before starting on the day's trek. The trek to Lake 69 starts through a valley surrounded by snow capped peaks, then ascends past lots of waterfalls and finally arrive at the lake which is worth the huffing and puffing to get there. Four days were not long enough but we trekked, relaxed and made new friends! See attached pictures for a taste of Llanganuco. S & T

There's really not a better spot base for exploring the Cordillera Blanca than this comfortable lodge. After driving up a dirt road for about 45 minutes after leaving the tiny town of Yungay, you reach the lodge at the foot of Huascaran and Huandoy, and the scene is breathtaking! I was feeling sick from altitude (the tea helps) and even that couldn't stop me from having a great time. As the other reviews attest, Charlie is a wonderful host. The three course dinners after a long day of hiking were perfect. If you go, don't miss hiking Laguna 69 - a good challenge but well worth it!

Off grid living is a way of life for Charlie, and he is very passionate about it. Within minutes of arriving, we already felt like we were at home, and could clearly see that a 4 day stay was not long enough. The food was amazing (Thanks Tito!), and the views phenomenal. Lake 69 in a near-by national reserve is well worth a visit, and a very memorable day hike. When I am back in Peru, I will be visiting Llanganuco Lodge again!

The Llanganuco Mountain Lodge is more of an experience than a place to stay, and for us was an incredible 3 days. My wife and I chose to spend the 2nd half of our Peru vacation here because of the direct access (out our front door) to world class hiking and the remoteness of the location. The hiking from this lodge is unmatched in Peru, there are 5-6 completely different alpine hikes accessible straight from the lodge, and a wealth of others accessible via a 20-30 minute cab ride, which the lodge will arrange for you.

Some surprises for us were the three excellent meals per day, the quality of the room and bed we had, the fact that the tap water was drinkable, and the company, which included the owner Charlie and his dogs, his assistants from Yungay, and the other lodge guests who were equally excited to be there and to go trekking each day. The dinner conversations were great each night. Charlie is a true host who is willing to go out of his way to make your stay as comfortable as you want it to be.

If you are planning to stay in Huaraz for trekking, don't, unless you're looking for nightlife. We spent a day in Huaraz and it is at least 3 hours from any decent hiking in the Cordillera. It was also smoggy, dusty, and loud.

Don't pass up this lodge if you're looking to visit the Cordillera Blanca or Peru, it is top notch.

After living in Huaraz for 5 months, I was looking for a relaxing escape to unwind and reflect on my time in Peru. The Llanganuco Lodge is the perfect place in the Cordillera Blanca to soak in the mountains, relax, and hike. I spent a long weekend (Friday-Monday) at the Lodge in a private room, traveling with a friend. The room was incredible. I slept wonderfully every night under the plush down comforter - it was amazing! The lodge itself is situated on a hilltop below some of the tallest peaks in the Cordillera Blanca. It is a stunning location, and the sunsets over the Cordillera Negra are gorgeous. The food is delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the excellent dinner conversation with the other guests staying at the Lodge and the owner, Charlie.

You can walk out the doors of the lodge and have access to a myriad of dayhikes such as Laguna 69, the Llanganuco Lakes, and a glacier/ice fall. The Lodge can even serve as a jumping off point to summit Pisco. This is a huge change from being based in Huaraz, where the trailheads are typically a 1-2 hour drive away. This ease of access to the mountains, the luxurious rooms, delicious food, and fantastic hospitality make Llanganuco Lodge the ideal place to unwind and relax in the Cordillera Blanca! GO!

There's a combination of things working together to lift you off the ground at Llanganuco Lodge. Firstly, and this might only be stark to fellow city folk, every way you look is land. It’s big, open and green. Secondly, the meals, which are included in the price, are home cooked and leave you wishing you weren't full. We found that after a long day of hiking, the soup, served every evening before the main course, is the most delicious thing you have eaten every time you eat it. Thirdly, the rooms are beautiful and clean (we stayed in a private room), the showers are hot and the water pressure is excellent.
It's also worth mentioning that we arrived at the lodge mostly clueless about which hikes to go on. If this is you, sit back, relax and let the Lodge plan for you. The staff went out of their way to help us pick out day-hikes compatible with our interests and energy level.
Overall, I came away from the weekend more knowledgeable about mountain culture, full of soulful food and wine and unexpectedly, scheduling a trip for my family to visit the lodge later this year. Much thanks goes out to the Llanganuco Lodge staff for the good company, bottomless coffee and unforgettable experience.
