Whether you're looking for a fantastic place to acclimatize before any serious trekking in the Cordillera Blanca or appreciate the idea of having a comfortable bed, steaming hot water and delicious meals waiting for you after enjoying the multitude of alpine day hikes on offer right outside your door, this place is for you. The experience is unmatched in Peru and to my knowledge there is no other lodge closer to the boundary of Huascaran National Park. We would have loved to extend our three-night stay by a few nights had we been able to do so.
The Lodge is extremely remote and off the grid, but that's the beauty of the place and what makes it so unique. You can take your breakfast outside and enjoy the stunning views of Huandoy and Huscaran peaks on sunny days, and enjoy the sunset over the Cordillera Negra with a beer or a hot drink in hand after a long day of hiking. If you go don't miss the trek up to Laguna 69 - it's worth the effort.
The rooms were surprisingly comfortable and have great beds with down comforters that do a great job of insulating you from the high-altitude chill, water pressure was more than adequate and the three daily meals were delicious (the bread pudding was over the top) including the packed lunches with two sandwiches and plenty of goodies to keep you going throughout the day. All this at a place that puts a strong, genuine emphasis on sustainability.
Owner Charlie is a hardworking, affable and down to earth guy that strikes a perfect balance between socializing with the great group of guests his place tends to attract and demonstrating the level of professionalism necessary to provide everyone with an unmatched, top-notch experience. Not only is he a great host, he's also extremely knowledgeable when it comes to anything involving mountaineering in Peru so if that's your kind of thing he's a great resource for helping you make the most out of your trip.
Yes, the Llanganuco Mountain Lodge is expensive by Peruvian standards and was the most expensive place I stayed during my 17-day trip, but overall I felt it was by far and away the best value of any of them. Considering what you get (a high level of comfort in such a stunning remote place, three delicious meals per day, direct access to the attractions of the Cordillera Blanca without having to waste hours on transport from dusty and out-of-the-way Huaraz and not needing to pay for tours through overpriced agencies there) it's more than worth it. If you're only planning on splurging once, have this be the place. You won't be disappointed.
