My daughter and I had hiked with a trekking company. Therefore, the hotel had been booked by the expensive trekking company I used (Llama Path) and not by myself. Having said that, I wish I had paid extra money for an upgraded hotel. This place reminds me of the one-star hotels I stayed in when I was poor and in my early 20's and traveling through Europe. The first room they gave us smelled damp and musty. I went to lay on the bed and noticed what appeared to be black mold on the wall. The "window" looked out onto the stairwell of the hotel (!). I was rather upset about the room. I asked for another room but was told that there were no other rooms. The gentleman who owns/runs the place must have thought I was a total nut because I started frantically miming how there was mold on the wall. He gave me another room. The gentleman is a rather sweet man - it's just that the place is basically a one-star hotel and I was expecting something nicer. The hotel is a long hike up the hill from the train station, which is difficult if you are carrying your own bags (as I was). The breakfast was the worst we had while we were in Peru - and it was heartbreaking because the old gentleman seemed so proud of the breakfast. If you are on a strict budget, I would look at other choices in Aguas Calientes. If you aren't on a strict budget, don't stay here - look for something that has a better review on Trip Advisor.
