We couldn't afford either of the high end hotels in Aquas Calientes, but were convinced we had to see the sun rise, and wanted to splurge on this part of our trip because we were so excited about Machu Pichu. We chose Rupa Wasi for our stay, and they met us at the train station and escorted us to the hotel. Rupa Wasi was so awesome and helpful before our trip, but once we got there we were somewhat disappointed. They suddenly closed their restaurant for dinner just because they were tired from preparing for a big dining group at lunch. And, I think for $60 USD a night, we just expected something different. From all the other reviews this place sounded like it was tucked off in the middle of nowhere, but it's actually less than a block and a half away from the Plaza de Armas. The pillows were fluffy, which was a luxury on our trip, and the shower was nice, as was the staff.

Aquas Calientes, overall, was a dumpy little overpriced town I would never stay in again, unless it were for wanting to see the sunrise over Machu Pichu - only possible if you stay overnight there.

We are really happy we chose Rupa Wasi for our one night in AC. They offered to meet us at the train station and show us the way to the hotel (which is an easy 5 min or so walk till u get to the stairs). Staff were very relaxed and friendly. We chose an upstairs room after reading comments on TA and were stoked. It had 2 beds, the main bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was great, hot, powerful shower and deep, deep bath. A TA member complained of a lack of privacy in the bathroom on an earlier post. I think we stayed in the same room and it didnt bother us. Yes the blinds were on the outside and didnt cover the window entirely but their is no access to the window and there is a massive rock in front of it anyway. There are about a hundred or so stairs u need to climb to reach the hotel from the street. We are in our late twenties with normal fitness and climbing them twice a day didnt bother us. Takes a minute or two. Breakfast was yogurt and bread rolls with jam, juice and tea. The only downside to our stay here, and it was a tiny one, was the sun streaming through the windows in the morning. We had lunch at their restaurant, a yummy vege lasagna.
I have to mention that AC is a cool little town. We could have spent another night here. Happy children are playing in plaza, puppies are running around playing with each other. The markets are really good and there are a tonne of restaurants. While on the subject, dont eat at the Hot Springs Pizzeria along the train lines. We ate in their empty restaurant because they had Visa signs plastered all over the front door. When it came time to pay they said we couldnt pay by visa and when we told them thats why we chose to eat there they told us their would be a 15% surcharge. If the meal was any good i wouldnt mind paying this inflated rate cause it isnt that much money but the alpaca steak i ordered wouldnt even cut with a knife and fork. Anyway we said we would not pay the surcharge because we wernt advised of it earlier and suddenly our waiter could no longer understand english. We ended up finding the atm and pulling $ out of our credit card. This was our only yuck experience in Peru, i would not recommend this restaurant for so many reasons.

“Didn't even keep us a room....”

After arriving in Aguas Calientes after 4 days trekking we were told by the hotel staff that they hadn't kept our booking. First they denied we had ever made a booking until we showed them our email reservation (that they had sent us directly). We decided to stay somewhere else - the staff are incredibly rude.

We stayed at Rupa Wasi for one night. We paid $40 for downstairs room and probably because it is so close to the ground, the room had the horrible moldy smell. The bathroom is covered with mildew. The price od this room should not have exceeded $20!
However, the room and the bedding were clean, and it was plenty of hot water in the shower.
We asked for the hitter, left the windows opened and by the late night got rid of this horrible smell.
Breakfest was OK. Yougurt, bread and tea/coffe. They did not have cereal though...
Suprisingly the receptionist did not know the ticket price to Macchu Picchu! Hello... this plcace exists for it!

Also there is construction around the lodge so it is not very pleasant to walk up the staires to the enterance. And yes, there are plenty of staires!

We booked this hotel through the internet. We stayed in the 'deluxe room' wich was nice. The view from the room was great and the room was really comfortable. It was a little bit hard to find, but we asked and we found it quickly.

The staff was friendly and helpful. They suggested us to do a treck to the Putukusi mountain and it was one of our best experiences in Peru. They also made us lunchboxes for the day we went to the Machu Picchu.

We would recommend this accomodation.
