“Good enough for the short stay!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

I read a lot of negative reviews for this Hostal, but in fact our room was OK for the short time we stayed there.

There is indeed a whole cut out of the samll bathroom to make the door close. And indeed you have not a lot of space when you sit on the toilet... but hey, for us it was not a problem. We did not get wi-fi access to our room.

More important: the room was clean, we had a good night sleep, a confortable bed, and the hostal is located close to the river. So if you are lucky (or ask it when making the reservation) you can have a view on the riverside. You can really hear the river all day and night.... relaxing! :-)
The shower was good. We had hot water.

We got up at around 4 am to do the MP trip. They have the option to leave your luggage there after check-out. They also serve early breakfast in sync with the early departure time to MP with the bus.

If you do not ask more of a hostel/hotel when just staying some few hours in the hotel, a room at this hotel is really good enough to book!

Room Tip: Ask a room with a view on the river (if you don't mind the sound of the river during the night)!

This hostal is okay. Our room had a river view. It was clean. Breakfast was good. Loved the pancakes.

The only real negative was they lost one of our reservations. In they end we found a room at one of there sister properties. It worked out.

Rooms with a balcony on the riverside have a nice view, you will hear the river all day and night (which to us was ok, but to some might ruin their night).
Staff was friendly but nothing extraordinary. Shower was good, hotel was clean.
Breakfast not mentionable.
In the morning there was no electricity. This probably happens more often, the hotel does not have a back up generator.

Next time I would search for a better deal in Aguas Calientes.

We stayed in the Hostal Presidente for 1 night while we were visiting Machu Picchu. I had a single room that smelled from the dirty bathroom.

The bathroom was also so small that when you sat on the toilet there was 3 inches from my knees to the wall. I am very short. If I had been a taller person I would have to sit sideways. The door was also cut out in the center so it could pass the sink. There was a shower, but i would not go in it due to how dirty it was.

One of my friends had an accident and broke her foot. The local hospital put it in a cast and told her to stay off it for 24 hours before we took the train back to Cusco. We spoke to the front desk and said that she would have to stay in the room for a few extra hours until the train left. We said they we would pay for the extra day, even though it would only be 6 hours. They refused and made her get out of the room at 8:30 AM.

There was another person who had gotten dysentary and was vomiting profusely. They also refused to let her stay in the room for a few extra hours, at any cost. They made both women sit in their restaurant. One in a cast and the other vomiting.

The had spotty WiFi which only worked in the lobby occasionally.

The breakfast was just adequate. Hot water and tea bags, coffee, undercooked scrambled eggs, over ripe fruit, and bread.

Camping out would have been nicer than staying here!

The Presidente hotel is a bit far off from the train and bus stations, but that makes it relatively safe and quiet. The rooms are nice enough and comfortable, although you have to keep the blinds drawn for privacy when you're in the courtyard. The wahsrooms are very small and the window gives into your neighbour's bathroom! Breakfast early in the morning is served at a separate hotel, a block or so away.

All that being said, it was a good sleeping experience and the view from the top floor was great.
Not the best hotel, but not the worst.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony; they make it nicer.

First of all is it a Hotel or a Hostel ?
We first saw the building across the street which doubles as a railway line and it didn't look promising. On entering the premises we were greeted by a dingy reception area and a seemingly disinterested receptionists - we were not even briefed on where breakfast was served or where our room was. Having found our room we found that also to be dingy and were greeted with a view of corrugated iron sheeting from our window. The bedroom smelt musty and the carpet was torn and the bathroom was so small they had a cut out in the door to mirror the shape of the washbasin so it would pass and your knees scraped the wall when using the toilet ! To cap it all there was no hot water or even warm water !!
The only positive was the room was relatively quiet being in the centre of the building it didn't suffer directly from the sound of the trains running down the street or the sound of the rapids from the river.
In the morning there was still no hot or warm water ! Breakfast was OK but nothing startling . After being out for the day there was still no hot water and when I complained several backpackers in reception suggested it was the norm. Complaining about the lack of hot water was difficult as the staff don't speak English but when I finally managed to get the problem across some action was taken and hot water was available a few hours later.
That night there was a torrential downpour and water came into the room drenching the curtains and carpet and soaking one of our back packs ! Again reception appeared completely disinterested.
We left the following morning relishing the thought of our next hotel which couldn't be any worse - in fact it was a complex of 5 star cottages in the peace and quiet of the Sacred Valley.
As my title suggests - THE WORST HOTEL WE HAVE EVER STAYED IN !!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else !

This review is for the hotel! I honestly did not have any of the problems that I am reading in the reviews! We had a nice double bedroom with a little balcony facing the river. We loved the sound of the water. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was small but with no problems. The water pressure in the shower was amazing. Our room was located in one of the lower level floors. Breakfast was really good. There was wifi in the lobby. The hotel is very well located in the middle of of town but without the noise of the train which was great! I totally recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room in the hotel, not a hostal. We loved the river view and did not mind the water sound.
