“Damp and smelly”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012 via mobile

We were quite disappointed with this hostel. The sheets smelt damp and wet. The Wifi did not work in the rooms and the breakfast was the least impressive out of all the hostels we stayed at.

Hostal Presidente is a quaint little property. Our room was rather small but the hotel's charm made up for it. Considering we were only in Aguas Calientes as a jumping off point to Machu Picchu, the hotel was perfectly suitable. My one complaint was the size of the bathroom. In fact, it was so small a notch had to be cut out of the bathroom door in order to allow the door to clear the sink.

Aguas Calientes is not a very big town so everything was readily accessible from this hotel. The bus stop for the bus to Machu Picchu is just a block away.

We arrived about 11 A.M. only to find that they had no record of us booking a room. We always carry all our correspondence, so had the paperwork. We were lucky it was off season andcould have looked elsewhere, but they did find us a decent room in the back of the hotel overlooking he river.
The room had a queen size bed, was very modern and comfortable. There was lots of hot water and plenty of room. The breakfast was decent as well.
This was the most expensive room we had on our month in Peru and defineatly not better then any of the others. I guess one is a captive in this one purpose city.
Check out is early, but they will store bags if one is taking a later train. We spent one afternoon and one morning at Macchu Pichu and caught the afternoon train to Cusco
Although we were comfortable and have no negatives about the hotel, there might be better value elsewhere.

Room Tip: Pick a room overlooking he river at the back of the hotel

The hotel is good, with a nice breakfast and a great location. The room was confortable and clean, but according to the recepcionist we were lucky to have wi-fi in our room, because some of the rooms doesn´t (it depends on the location of the room).
The fact is: we almoust didn´t stay at the hotel, waking up really early for our trip to Machu Picchu and enjoying the nice restaurants from Aguas Calientes the night before. So I felt I could have paid less for a simpler hotel and with the same benefits.
Another thing was that the water wouldn´t go away during the shower, and either you would close the water eventually to let it go or the bathroom would become completely wet. That wasn´t nice.
Overall, it´s a good and confortable hotel (if you want to pay the price).

Decent enough hotel, guess its pretty par for the course for Aguas Calientes. We had a room at the back on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the river. Would definitely recommend going for these rather than the ones in the front given that the train line runs right in front of the hotel. Room was not too bad in terms of cleanliness. The bathroom was ok, good shower with hot water. A basic breakfast buffet. Checkout is at 9am, need to factor this in calculations about train tickets etc.

Aguas calientes is a weird place because everyone is there for a day or two and get up at 4 am to queue up for the buses to Machu Picchu. You don't need much in the way of luxury in the hotel. The rooms had hot water, but that's about all I can say for them. The beds aren't that comfortable (and you DO want a good night's sleep if you are getting up early to hike and climb all day.) Also - the rooms are dark. And I mean, really dark. Like a couple of very low-wattage bulbs dark. You may, in fact, need a flashlight to find things in your suitcase or read a book. In short, you're probably better off in one of the many other available options.

We heard that the Presidente was pretty much par for the course in Aguas Calientes, where prices are high and hotel standards are low. The Presidente has earned some negative feedback about its plumbing issues and our experience was similar. Our bathroom sink leaked dirty water all over the bathroom floor whenever we used it. Mentioning it to the management brought a wide-eyed look of surprise (as if!) but no action. On the plus side: our triple room was reasonably clean and comfy, and we had a little balcony right on the rushing river. Since the climate is quite humid in Aguas Caliente year round, I strongly suggest that the Presidente pull out all its carpeting and install some mold-proof flooring. The mildew had me choking at night.
