“I would highly recommend this Hostal to Travellers visiting Machu Picchu!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

To anyone planning a trip to visit Machu Picchu in the future, I would highly recommend that you stay at El Mistico Hostal and spend some time in Aguas Calientes. I have a yoga studio in Barrie, Ontario and I have taken groups of 16 people on Spiritual Pilgrimages to Peru and we always stay at this amazing hostal! The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The hostal is located on the river, very close to the hot springs. Some rooms have a balcony which face the river. The sound of the water makes it extremely peaceful for sleeping at night. Breakfast is also included with the reasonable rate that is charged for this very welcoming accomodation. The owner, "El Sara" (Marco), is also an artisan who makes and sells beautiful jewellery, as well as other unique suveniers, in his store, which is conveniently located below the hostal! Even if you do not plan on staying over night in the town, I would recommend that you visit the store to see all the amazing jewellery, gems and crystals available for sale there! I am definately planning another return visit to El Mistico in the future with another group!

Before we get to the review, a comment about Aguas Calientes in general. We were pleasantly surprised. It IS commercial, but much nicer than the many things we read about beforehand. The only negative we encounterd was the lousy food and service, but maybe we just struck out twice in a row. Maybe there are nice places to eat there.

Anyway, we stayed at El Mistico the night before our trip up to Machu Picchu. We had reserved a room by internet and had very good communications with the staff to work out the details in advance. We were met at the train station and escorted to the hostal, a considerable yet comfortable up-hill walk. The hostal is towards the end of the town, very near the Hot Springs. The comfortable beds, the all-wood paneling and floor, and the sound of the water from the Urubamba River behind the hostal combined to create a very soothing and peaceful environment after a day of travelling. The balcony overlooking the river was a plus. The bathroom is modern and comfortable with plenty of hot water. We also found the smell of the hotel to be clean and pleasant. We arranged to eat breakfast at 5:00 a.m. the following day, and found it waiting for us...juice, scrambled eggs, pan de huaro, butter, jam and coffee. The young girls that worked at the hostal were very shy, but also very nice. It was a very good experience at a very good price.

We would strongly recommend this hostal. We wish we had stayed an extra day.

We are a family of 5 people and we stayed there for 1 night. The bostal is very good, rooms are confortable and clean and there is a great atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is ok, exactly the same that you can find in every otherhotel in Bolivia.

Let us consider this Hostel from the context that most people will be spending one night here before an early rise to visit Machu Picchu. Thus, we need a hot shower, a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed and a hearty breakfast. All these are found at El Místico, and for an excellent price. The sounds of the river to soothe one to sleep are a bonus! I was collected at the train station and the girls helped me to buy my bus tickets and showed me where to buy my MP ticket the following morning (we arrived 5min after the place closed).

It is an uphill walk to get to the hostel, but then it's all good the following morning when heading down to the bus :-) Since I went to the thermal baths the next afternoon, I had to go up anyway, so it didn't make much difference. The hostal is just metres from the entrance to the thermal baths. Although I found some of the furnishings to be shabby and there was a tear in the bed sheet, the room was generally clean and I didn't have a problem for the one night I was there.

Little hostal with friendly and helpful staff. Good for an overnight stop at Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) en route to Machu Picchu but a bit basic for longer stays.

A bit of an uphill walk from the train station if you're carrying luggage (the only way to get around the town is to walk) and right next to the hot springs that give the town its name. We had a room over the river, which was great, as the town isn't very pretty. Lots of eating places nearby but the whole town is very touristy, and particularly this part of it, so expect high prices and nondescript food.

Service was great, although the staff had no English and we had no Spanish and it was hard for them to figure what we wanted. There was no heater in our room and the staff said they hadn't one, but they brought one to our room from somewhere late at night. They also had a hot breakfast ready at 5 am before we left for Machu Picchu. The staff were also good about letting us check out late as our train left in the evening.

There was Wi-Fi in the lobby but if wasn't strong enough to use in the room.

The hostel is an amazing deal--nice staff, beautiful wooden walls and floors, comfortable beds, fabulous hot water...and we even had a balcony overlooking the river! Not to mention the nice breakfast, bread, jam, eggs, coffee, papaya juice starting at 5am so you can eat before heading up to Machu Picchu. Of all the hostels we've stayed at in 16 months of world travel, this is one of the top! THE budget place to stay in Aguas Calientes--and worth far more than a "budget" option. Stop making yourself crazy reading reviews and book it!

This was the lowest priced hostal during our stay in Sacred Valley. Despite the town of Aguas Calientes being the cheesiest and rather inhospitable location overall (don't get me started on the restaurant touts), Hostal El Mistico was a friendly oasis in its midst, with honest service and accommodating staff. They even got up in the middle of the night to prepare breakfast for their guests. It is definitely a budget place, but for the money, they deliver 110%. Recommended.
