“A Must!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

I had heard negative comments about guides and we had the luxury of taking two days to visit the area. The second day we got a guide outside the gate, talked with her a little before we went in, just to make sure this was not a canned tour. It wasn't! The official guides have attended classes in the university and beyond that are knowledgeable and passionate.
For us it was nice contrast - wandering through the site based on our prior readings and then being able to ask someone questions we had.
Use the facilities before you go in (bring 1 sol). This is an archaeological site, not a tourist attraction. You can come back out to use the facilities or eat your lunch - expensive if you don't bring your own. Make sure to bring water - it can be hot!

“Machu Picchu a wonder of the world!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Machu Picchu lived up to all our expectations. It is an amazing place, and you can't take a bad picture. Our tour of Peru package included a private guide for the two of us for an afternoon, and I would strongly recommend that. We went at our own pace, and saw and learned a lot more that way. We had a two-day pass, but didn't need the second day, which we spent exploring and shopping in Aguas Calientes. The markets there are the best we saw in Peru, for both variety and prices. (Tip: When you go up to tour Machu Picchu be sure to bring light, collapsible umbrellas, because showers come and go quickly there.)

“Village near Machu Picchu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

Nice little village. Very big tourist market. Has all of the basic necessities if you get up into the Andes without something. Main claim to fame is that it's the jumping off point to visit Machu Picchu...which is incredible!

“Astounding venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

Machu Picchu undoubtably is spectacular. The overall organisation is amazing. Buses every 5 minutes to take you to and from Aguas Calientes. Pleanty of guides available but would recommend these be booked in advance. Be prepared take food/water/insects repellant and sun screen with you. Once you get to Machu Pucchu prices quadruple. The terrazzas del inca will provide packed lunches at reasonable price.
