“MP Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2012

Small museum, best worth the visit.
Some excellent photos. Wish there were more photos as well as relics found at the site.

“Good backgrounder”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2012

The museum had great information particularly about the infastructure below and around Machu Picchu that you can't see but is essential to its function and longevity. An understanding of the engineering is critical to really appreciating it. The museum is well done and really increased our enjoyment and appreciation of Machu Picchu and all Inca construction.

“small but definitely worth it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

It's a little out of the way--you have to walk down the road to Machu Picchu, about 1.5 km to the bridge and then the museum is tucked in the woods to the right after the bridge. The walk was actually pretty cool along the raging river, but there are buses passing frequently and it was rainy and muddy (Feb). The museum isn't that big--7 small rooms, but is really cool if you have some time before or after visiting MP to give some perspective and information about the site. There is a "time capsule" room that tells what else was going on in the world when MP was built, some artifacts from the site (including the only piece of gold found there), information about the excavation, etc. It doesn't take long to see everything that is there, but there also isn't much else to do in Aguas Calientes so I think it's worth visiting if you have some extra time. There's also a botanical garden you can visit, though from looking in quickly it didn't seem like there were too many flowers blooming.
