“Best Italian in Lagos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2008

Summary: Good Italian food at a reasonable price, nice decor, good service.

Lagos is a difficult place to visit. You need a driver to get anywhere, traffic is horrendous, and most restaurants do not accept credit cards.

Il Sorriso is a gem that is located not too far from downtown Lagos. Alas, it took us an hour to get there from Lekki due to the always horrific traffic, but at least that gives you time to work up an appetite. We enjoyed the antipasta plate (imported meat, no worries), mozzerella tomato, and other appetizers - all very good. The shrimp entrees are also quite good, but the pasta was also delicious. The tiramisu dessert was as good as you'll find anywhere. Service was quick (labor is cheap in Nigeria) and there was a good selection of wines. The location is quite secure, with secured parking behind locked gates and plenty of guards. The decor is appropriate with a collection of varied artwork. The cheerful Italian owner overseas the operation to ensure a pleasant experience.

Overall, I woudl say it is one of the best restaurants in Lagos. I subtract a star because the food was only good, not great, by US standards. My mashed potatoes were mediocre.
