“Gets boring after a while...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

Very safe guest house (hesitate to call it a hotel) well off the main road - no traffic noise at all (at least not above the aircon. Good sized rooms with decent TV - pity about the poor mix of channels - be great for plugging your laptop in and watching MP4s. Bathroom works, but plumbing is to local standard so don't expect too much.
Food is typically expensive Nigerian, and gets a bit boring after a while. There is now a "Colonades" sign on the main road ,but it's still a very low-key place.
Pool is nice to sit around, but I didn't feel the need to try it. Nice trees in the garden if you can get far enough away to appreciate them.

I spent 3 nights at the Colonades, was comfortable and happy there. The staff is wonderful, and I had various kinds of help from them during my stay. A buffet breakfast was included wiith the room and offered cooked to order eggs or omelettes. I tried a couple of dinners from the menu and was pleased each time. Grounds are secure and well tended, pretty, but there are few places to sit or work outside. Since I spent a fair amount of time actually at the hotel, I would have liked a shady table and chair where I could use the wifi and sip tea. Perhaps next time.

I spent 3 weeks here in May and a further week in June facilitating training programmes in the hotel. Not very safe to go outside without a guard so the whole time was spent in the hotel. Bit like a comfortable prison!

Bedroom was spacious with good aircon and a very big bed. TV mainly African, Indian or CNN so got very boring very quickly. Wet season was happening so experienced lots of rain and thunder which meant TV and internet signal dropped out frequently. If you plan to stay a while and have your laptop then take some dvds to watch and load your machine with music.

Staff are mainly terrific and friendly - especially a couple in the restaurant and Ben in the bar. The pool was out of action all the time I was there thanks to a leak but it was entertaining watching the workers fix it!

Restaurant and food, mmmmm what can I say? Forget the menu and just ask what's available each time you eat. I gorged on Spaghetti Bolognese most nights, skinny chicken with rice some nights, pizza some nights and club sandwich with chips some nights. Many food items not available. Same with the wine list - long but many wines not available. Availability a recurring problem. Time from ordering food to delivery is also a gamble and intriguing - especially when there are only a couple of diners.

If you have to visit Lagos and want somewhere reasonably priced (for Lagos), safe and friendly then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the golf course for a quiet night.

Some rooms are better than others! Having spent several months here on and off over the last year I got used to some of the annoyances, like the very weird shower screen and no bath plug or kettle in the room. Bath plugs can be ordered and arrive promptly, kettles are a bigger deal and it takes a lot of pestering to get one, but they do turn up. The restaurant offers good food at quite a price.Breakfast gets very boring very quickly but they do have an espresso machine which is usually working. Most of the staff are incredibly friendly and genuine and a pleasure to be around. Apart from the rather magnificent swimming pool the trees deserve a mention. The hotel is built amongst some incredible rainforest beauties and a great deal of care seems to have been taken to accommodate the trees.

One won't see a signboard for the Colonades Hotel, located at 21 Kingsway, Ikoyi, Lagos and that is the way the management wants it. This hotel, located in the high brow, tony Ikoyi section of Lagos, across the lagon from Victoria Island and close to the now hip Lekki area, is quiet, secluded, and secure. Well set back from busy Kingsway, one of Ikoyi's main streets, with high walls and massive Royal Palm trees dominating the grounds, the hotel is much more like a private apartment residence than a hotel. Its privately owned, not branded, and does not seek out the casual or holiday tourist. It is targeted at the corporate business market. The guests are there on business for the multinationals, at corporate training seminars, or a contractor or consultant for one of the foreign consulates. A mix of corporate Nigerians and expatriates populate the hotel. The ambience is one of a apartment complex, with a small reception, a small and unassuming upstairs bar, and a cozy multi room dining area. Don't expect alot of socializing with other guests who are either in their rooms working, or resting after a long day and the exhaustion of sitting in Lagos traffic. If one wants entertainment, they have to leave the hotel grounds for it. The hotel includes a large swimming pool adjacent to the main building with a nice evening bar patronized primarily by the hotel guests. The food is surprisingly good and includes continental and Nigerian dishes. The rooms are fairly large, adequately appointed with cable TV, the mini fridge, and tea service. Internet is free but the wireless is spotty in some parts of the hotel with internet cable preferable for many. The staff is pleasant and professional. My room cost was $175 per night with breakfast, internet, and tea service included. That's fairly reasonable by Lagos expatriate business standards. Lagos is not an inexpensive town and as Nigeria benefits from a combination of top dollar prices for its petrol and a renewed international interest in doing business with Nigerian, expect to pay international prices for the better hotels. There are now several new international branded hotels in Lagos, on Victoria Island and Lekki. But for the quiet and comfort of Ikoyi, this is among the best to stay at for the price. Finding it may be the bigger challenge. As an old Nigeria hand, I recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: ask about internet.

As a solo female on business I do not go out at all - so the room is not only a place to lay my head down at night. The no-tea no-kettle in the rooms was not cool at all. At least the airconditioner worked excellent. The wireless connection had a poor signal, but the LAN connection was great.

The glass panel at the bath makes it difficult to close the watertaps.

This was my first trip to Nigeria for 18 years and I spent a lot of time on the internet reading up on hotels... nothing inspired confidence! Then a friend found the Colonades in Ikoyi and booked it for us.

On arrival, you have no idea there is a hotel behind the high gates (great security!)... no sign; just "21" hanging from a post. You go through the gates, along a pretty drive, then through another set of gates where the guards are smiling and courteous. Lovely buildings!

My heart was still in my mouth... I'd brought cleaning materials, gloves, sponges, my own sheets and towels... just in case! The Reception was tasteful, the staff friendly, polite and smiling!! It was late, we were shown to our room...

The lift worked, the corridor was clean, the door opened.... a lovely clean room. No smell. No dust. Upon thorough inspection... pure white sheets and towels (smelling fresh!); bathroom sparkling marble. Everything to a very high standard.

We stayed 9 nights. Wonderful experience. Room service was excellent. Food good (a bit pricey... hotel prices). Pool, tennis court, bar, restaurant all fully staffed and clean.

Travelled with a three year-old and by the end of our stay she knew all the staff; they all knew her name and played with her.

The best thing about the hotel is the staff and cleanliness. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. Nice decor too.

I highly receommend this to anyone travelling to Lagos.
Considering my trepidation before I went, I wish someone had told me about this place and there would have been no need for all the worrying.

Caution: It's only been open for 6 months... as it's Nigeria, we just hope the standard is kept up, the facilities are maintained and the staff remain motivated!
