We chose La Omaja after reading several reviews, some good, some bad, and we are so glad we did! We were happily surprised at our beautiful spacious sturdy casita (little house) on a landscaped hill, with a cathedral ceiling, 2 beds, big bath, big porch with coverd roof and arches, comfy big chairs for inside and out, and a view of the sunset over lake Nicaragua. We spent 3 nights there, and enjoyed the company of the owner, Jamie, from Omaha, hence the "hotel" name, and his friendly family and staff (Miriam, Roxanna, Christopher, Ava, Asa ). There are 2 volcanos on the island, and we can see both from La Omaha--- Maderas, covered in cloud forest on the slope behind us has a constant cloudcover and cool strong breezes, so no bugs or mosquitos around; Concepcion is visible from the very large opensided restaurant and the front of the property. There are beatiful flowers, and several birds we'd never seen before: big bright blue ones with antenna and split long tails, birds that only sang after sunset, etc. We could hear a howler monkey in the forest behind our house.
There are many activities provided. We kayaked with a guide on the windy lake into remote Rio Istian and recommend it. And we enjoyed a refreshing swim in Ojo de Agua, a cool natural spring made into a rustic inground swimming hole; the walk in and out was very scenic (we went in one way and back out to the road another).
The food at La Omaja was excellent and the menu varied. This is a beautiful, relaxing and reasonably-priced oasis. I would like to have spent more time there, gone horesback-riding and hiking. Don't neglect to check it out if headed for Isla Ometepe. The best way to get there is to share a cab to Merida from the ferry in Myopgalpa, but you can take the public bus. Only part of the road is paved so the picturesque ride is bumpy and takes at least 1 !/2 hours, up to 3 hours on bus.
