“Nice little spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

This hotel is really nice. It took us a long way to get there, but it was definitly worth it. The hotel has a nice view over the volcanos and the lake and it has a nice ambiance. Only the beds in the room weren't that comfortable..

A very long way to get there but it's really worthwhile. You only reach the resort on an unpaved, very rough road (or better a path) from Ometepe's main ferry terminal. Plan two hours for this drive. The family owned hotel and restaurant overlooks the bay between both volcanos Concepcion and Maderas and offers a direct spectacular view on the Volcano Concepcion (1610 meters). There are 8 cabinas nestled in a hillside forest at the west side of Volcano Maderas. The cabins are very well equiped and maintained. Open space restaurant, friendly staff and simple but very nice food making the stay very convenient. Extraordinary, for the island and whole Nicaragua, is the new infinity pool and jacuzzi. We only can guess how the workers got all the material from the main land to this secluded place.

Room Tip: Shouldn't be a problem to find the right cabin

Thank you Andreas for your detailed commentary it is greatly appreciated. Believe me, building the pool was no easy task! But definitely worth it I think.

After staying one night in Santa Cruz we decided to head to this side of the island - as the bus didn't run until the afternoon we decided to trek it hoping to hitch hike.... not the best idea! The roads are so bad that vehicles are rare. It was a good 2 hour hike in the heat with our packs but when we finally climbed up the hill to Omaja and saw the views it was worth it!
There was not a single soul when we arrived as I had only emailed the owner the day before that we were coming, we know very little spanish but one of the workers was able to show us a cabin and get us settled in. We had the pool area to ourselves for a whole day!
Our cabin was about $55 and had 2 double beds with private bath(hot showers!) and the best view right from your bed through the double doors! This place is pretty quiet and remote but perfect for us. Food was decent although priced on the higher side and one night they ran out of tonas even tho we were one of two couples staying there at the time! I found things ran a little smoother when the owner Jamie was around.

Pros:
Great views. Great Pool. Spacious cabins with hot water. Jamie will help you out with tours/info. (he dropped us off at base to San Ramon waterfall which was a nice hike).
Peaceful and quiet.

Cons:
Our biggest complaint about this place would be the slow service. We were never in a rush to get our meals but they would be in the kitchen for a good hour and not come out to see if we needed more beer or anything. Found we were waiting for drinks a lot. I often felt like I was putting them out if I asked for something, Could be a little friendlier.
It is remote so don't expect much nightlife or options to eat elsewhere - we didn't mind too much however.
Could have used some fun music playing now and then.
The windows had no screens so you couldn't have them open at night.
Large hole in our deck needed repair.

The highlights were really the great views from the pool and the jungle experience, we heard howler monkeys from our cabin and there were lots of butterflies and birds etc. Breakfast is the best meal here for value and one night they made us fresh blended pineapple juice for our rum.
Like all places Omaja could use a little tweaking in certain areas but I think Jamie and his wife have done a great job and I would stay here again.

We were a group of seven (73, 44, 43, 40, 10, 8 & 6) traveling to Nica for the first time with only one Spanish speaker. After touring Masaya & Granda, we boarded the ferry to Ometepe. A great fun ride with massive diversity and we chatted with people from all over.

We had arranged for transport from Moyogalpa to La Omaja. It was a mini-van which was clean and comfortable albeit no a/c. No worries. We saw many school children along the road plus lots of livestock. This road is crazy bumpy. Jamie warns of this on his site and he is not exaggerating. It took us about 80 minutes to arrive. And wow - this is a beautiful place to behold. The pool is new & totally fantastic. The landscaping of the property is so pretty - we saw the gardener working hard from morning until night using buckets to water the beautiful flowers and trees.

We had reserved three cabins and all were so pretty, simple & clean. We turned off the air b/c i was almost too cold. There are only sheets, so if you are someone who needs more than sheet - be warned. The showers were fine. The defining characteristic of the cabana is the hammock on the front porch. We made use of hammocks all over Nica and loved it.

The pool is perfect for kids and adults. We swam all three days of our trip. The restaurant & bar looks out over the pool, so our kids could swim while we checked up on email or enjoyed a Tona or three. I had read the reviews of the time it takes to get food, so I immediately ordered chicken fingers for the kids upon our arrival. Then we were able to swim & relax a bit before dinner. The food does take a long time but is fine and tasty. We stuck with some American food but mixed in the Nica food as well. We only ate at La Omaja on our trip but probably should have ventured out a bit.

Jamie arranged for our kayak trip which was spectacular. They towed our kayaks to the river where we observed gorgeous wildlife, flowers and plant life. Our guide spoke English which really helped. Noland was his name. He did such a great job. The kayak company, at our request, put a cooler full of beer and water for the trip.

The next morning we went Ojo de Agua - a beautiful watering hole that was a bit cold at first but then was just plain refreshing. We did tadpole hunting as well as races. They sell coconuts, beer & some souvenirs. It is crazy cheap & you could spend a whole day there relaxing. Alas, we were off to our ferry ride back to San Jorge.

The price was right for what we got at La Omaja. We enjoyed meeting Jamie's kids and waving hi to his wife. Wish we had more time to spend there and were a bit more adventurous in leaving the hotel & finding other dining and cocktail spots.

You can not beat the view at this place at sunset. It is unbelievable.

La Omaja really is a little piece of paradise! It's a little remote, but that's part of it's charm. You can do as much as you want or as little as you like. Whatever your choice, the scenery is beautiful and the vibe is relaxing. The view of Conception from the restaraunt and pool area is amazing. Jamie is awesome! He'll hook you up with whatever you want to do. One night he loaded us all in the van and took us to the local rodeo, what a hoot!! Still one of my favorite memories. The cabanas are all clean and comfortable and taking a nap in the hammock on your private porch is pure joy. Met some great people during our stay at La Omaja.

I stayed here for a short time (2 nights) after a volunteer trip. The long trip to the island was worth it! I had hoped to enjoy some of the local activities (kayaking and horseback riding), but we were all exhausted from the week. It was still worth the trip to hang out by the pool for the weekend and enjoy the gorgeous view. Our cabin was huge and very clean and the spacious porch was also a bonus, with its own view and a hammock. The owner seems to have carefully planned the layout for the cabins to take advantage of the property and the views. The staff were very friendly (and patient!), and the food was good. I find it hard to believe that other reviewers would complain about a limited menu when traveling in Central America, or about the cost of the hotel! Even speaking relatively, I consider it a bargain - it is a safe, clean, well-maintained property. It was great to have WiFi access at the pool area, as well. One caveat, if you're looking for absolute tranquility because of the location it may not be the case...both days (weekend) large groups showed up around mid-day. We were told one was related to a baseball game, though on both days it was large (and resultantly, loud) groups with multiple children. And certainly, it was not that anyone was ill-mannered, it was just very noisy. It was very peaceful at night, and may be more quiet during the week. Overall, I would highly recommend the hotel and would certainly stay again if I had more than 2 nights to spend.

This place is beautiful, clean, and very secure. I stayed in one of the cabanas with a couple of girlfriends an it was perfect. The infinity pool overlooking conception was amazing! Only in Nicaragua could you stay in a place like this and pay so little. Getting there is a little difficult. We took the chicken bus from the ferry port and it took about 2 hours. The road is really bumpy on that side of the island too. But I think that is the most fun and cheap way to get there so it was fine with me. Oh and the launches are soon rocky. Try to take the big ferry if you can. You will be much happier when you get to Ometepe. Only other thing is the food is just alright and it takes forever to get it( allow yourself an hour of waiting time) but its very reasonable and a small price to pay for a great place to stay. Plus I guess they are living on island time. Finally, this place is close to the waterfalls and he trail updates and can organize plenty of other activities. I rented a mtn bike from them, they dropped me off at Ojo de agua and I rode back home. It wasn't too far and I got to really see the island that way. I highly recommend trying that out.
