Beautiful land, beautiful area. We got to Finca Magdalena because its where you can hike up Volcan Maderas. The buildings and all looked a bit run down when we got there, the bathrooms were disgusting, many things were broken and falling apart, but the area was beautiful and thats whats important. Everyone always says that you have to have a guide to hike the volcano because its dangerous and easy to get lost, etc. We were told that as well when we arrived by the staff, that we werent allowed to just walk past on our own. We needed a guide. The price started high, and worked its way down to 6 bucks per person for the guide. We walked up a nice well groomed path, complete with wooden steps, etc. One of the nicer kept trails in Nicaragua, not sure where the dangerous sketchy reputation comes from. Our guide kept stopping every 5 minutes to sing us religious songs, or to discuss the natural beauty while blowing his cigarette smoke at us. He took us up a few hundred meters high (about a half hour of hiking), and then said, ok, turn around and we go back. He asked if we wanted to hike up to the laguna at the top and when we said yes, he laughed and said, thats a joke, and joked that it would take him hours and hours to get to the top. He lit another cigarette and walked us back the same path to the entrance. They showed us the coffee that they produce there, and when we asked if we could sample some, he told us "not for free", and directed us to buy cups of coffee at the restaurant area. Then everyone just disappeared, so after 10 minutes of standing around we figured that was it, and left.
Its too bad because its absolutely beautiful out there, and it wasnt a TERRIBLE time, but not worth taking the afternoon to visit. no one is around anyway so i recommend just walking up the trail yourself. youll have a better time checking the place out on your own.
