“Next time I'm going to Maderas Volcano”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

Concepcion was not a good hike for me. The trail is steep, it's windy at the look out and not that enjoyable. If I ever go back to Ometepe I'll hike Maderas Volcano.

“Awesome views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Make sure you take a guide when climbing the volcano to learn more about it's history, activity, plants and animals, etc. Most guides will take you the first 1,000 meters to a beautiful lookout, or all the way to the top. The first 1,000 meters is a comfortable challenge. If you're relatively in shape, it will be a bit difficult at times, but not too bad. Once you get to the lookout, there are no more plants, just a bit of grass, and it's super windy. To continue to the top, you will most likely be on your hands and knees on the exposed rock, trying to hold on with extreme wind. You should be in shape and have a lot of motivation and/or experience hiking and climbing. It is often cloudy at the very top, so views can be limited. I definitely recommend climbing the first 1,000 meters for some exercise and beautiful views. Climbing the rest is up to you!

There were so many different views of the Volcano and it was just amazing to see. I liked everything about it.

“Highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

I had an amazing experience with my independent guide Antonio. We woke up, had breakfast, bought snacks and water, and got climbing around 630 or 7. The jungle was super interesting - Antonio pointed out all sorts of flora and fauna, trees and monkeys and exotic plants and insects. The halfway point is gorgeous, all green, rolling hills and the cloud line. We then continued to the top- it's a very legitimate experience, as you summit the lava flow part, there are no real trails.
It's illegal to go with a guide because the Nicaraguan government got tired of sending helicopters up for foreign tourists who met disaster... that being said, it's not super dangerous. I reached the top, was fantastic, and made it down by 4pm. Never more hungry in my entire life.
