“Perfect balance of comfort and environmental respect.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We had the pleasure of staying at Via Verde for two nights in early June 2013. We had a friend visiting from the States for her first time in Nicaragua and we strove to show her the best of what this beautiful country has to offer. A trip to Ometepe was a definite stop on the itinerary.

After much research, we decided to book Via Verde. The reviews here certainly helped us make this decision. From the first contact to Eileen via e-mail to arrange our reservations, we knew we were in good hands.

We couldn't have imagined a better visit, even after the high expectations of reading the reviews. Eileen and Darrin have created a winning formula, and after almost 3 years of running Via Verde, they seem to give it the kind of attention and passion one would expect for a new business trying to make their mark. It is evident that they love what they do.

I will not repeat what all others have already said about location, helpfulness with activities, attention to detail, the awesome food, etc., because it has already been said (or written) and it is true!! What I will add is my absolute delight that Eileen and Darrin accomplish all of this while making a concerted and more than admirable effort to minimize the human impact on the environment and the land they so love and are lucky enough to be a part of.......

They have gone to great lengths to learn how to use the reproducing resources of the land and general sustainability of themselves and their guests - without compromise to comfort. Bravo!! We learned so much from you about what's possible and you have inspired us to do a better job of this during our daily lives.

We will most certainly be back to Ometepe, Via Verde, and Darrin's and Eileen's beautiful home. Thank you for sharing it with us and others. We look forward to seeing you again soon and many more times in the future.

Thor and Gus

Have you ever dreamed of having a cabin in the jungle with a view of a beautiful volcano? If so, this is the place for you! Eileen and Darren’s organic farm is a great place to stay on Ometepe Island! The farm offers guests with a quiet and private place to call home. We rented the cabin and were astonished with the amazing view of Volcano Conception! They offered a delicious breakfast for guests to eat before exploring the beauty of the island. Enjoy dinner delivered to your room at the cabin and watch a romantic sunset!

The cabin has a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a loft.

The farm is walking distance to beaches and the town of Belguay.

I too am reluctant to let the cat out of the bag on this one. Eileen and Darrin have absolutely thought of everything. I have never stayed in a place where every detail has been considered and covered so well. We stayed on the upper floor of the main home on the property and it is so unique and beautifully adapted to this spot. From the jaw-dropping view of Conception Volcano to the hammocks and rocking chairs on each generous deck. The fresh, beautiful breakfasts were extraordinary and my only complaint being that it was too much food - of course you can adjust your order for breakfast each morning but you don't want to miss any of that beautiful food, so that is hard to do. The place was very clean and organized. Eileen arranged for amazing guided tours for us. We did a kayak late in the day with Sean from Cafe Campestre through the Rio Istiam and out to Lake Nicaragua for the sunset. This is a must do if it is running and you are able bodied enough to do it. The bird life is stunning and we saw cayman as well! We did another tour with Ben, the owner of Cafe Campestre - a great mixed tour with discussion of history, daily life, Finca Magdeline (a farm), visiting Las Cuchillas a village in the hills, coffee and banana plantations, LOTS of great petroglyphs and a hike up to the Jerusalem waterfalls on the Maderas Volcano. So much information on this tour and a cool view of life in the hills on Ometepe. Again you need to be able bodied, but this tour is totally worth the hike!
Don't miss eating at Cafe Campestre in Balgue! The coffee is excellent, the food amazing! We had fun renting bikes and riding around on the days we didn't have tours planned. Ojo de Agua is a great place to swim and relax on a hot day. Lots of shade around a beautiful pool with food services and souvenirs for sale. There is a nominal fee to get in ($2 US when we were there). The beaches of Santa Domingo are very nice and were virtually empty while we were there. This area was a very nice place to be on Ometepe and this is the main place we would like to return to in Nicaragua! The pace on Ometepe is charming and the locals friendly (we found all the locals we encountered in Nicaragua to be very nice and genuine people). The ferry ride from San Jorge is a bit of an experience, but a nice cheap and decent way to get here and back. Don't miss Ometepe. And if you can get accommodations at Via Verde - don't hesitate, we highly recommend both the place and the people here! I recommend a minimum of 4 nights on the Island. Eileen and Darrin work hard to keep this place going and are very accommodating and lovely hosts!!!

I hesitated for nearly two months on writing this review, mostly because I wasn't sure if it were possible to put together words to describe Eileen & Darrin's hospitality, but also a little because I want to keep this gem all to myself!

Eileen and Darrin's B&B isn't just nice in comparison to the hotels in the area, it's excellent in comparison to places we've stayed in the U.S., Central America and Europe. The entire establishment is absolutely spotless. The interior design is simple and beautiful. The view from the communal deck upstairs is breathtaking.

They have literally thought of EVERYTHING to make your stay comfortable and unforgettable. There are umbrellas, towels, a lantern, a small desk/vanity area, folding stools, a ceiling fan, a closet area with hangers, fantastic linens, and beautiful patio with hammocks (yes, plural), rocking chair and a drying rack in each room. There is also sunscreen and bug spray in the bathroom if you've forgotten yours. You share a communal patio with the only other room in the main building (there is a cabin to rent, too!) which includes a refrigerator with free water, and beer, rum and soda for purchase. There is free wifi, a spotless hot shower and Eileen will even lend you a hose if you'd like to do some laundry.

And Eileen is a genius when it comes to local activities and provisions. She has a binder with information, menus and maps for about everything you could possibly do on the island. She scheduled a guide for us to hike Volcan Maderas, told us where to rent the best bikes, as well as reserved a pizza for us at El Zopilote, and arranged for our lunch to be made by a local restaurant for our hike. Any little thing about the area you need to know, Eileen is your girl. And if she doesn't know, you can bet she'll find out for you. And to top it off, these two love the community. They do what they can to give feedback to local establishments, taking the time to make a phone call or to extend a helping hand anywhere they can.

And somehow, if everything else wasn't already perfect, breakfast is included in your stay. And, let me tell you, the food only magnified how much we had come to love the place. While there, we tried the eggs, toasts, crepes, yogurt, granola, homemade jam and the beans, all of which (even the yogurt and granola) was homemade. There will likely be coffee brewing by the time you wake up, and I swear - Eileen made us the best cup of coffee we had on our trip through Central America. And we LOVE coffee. The breakfasts are big, cooked to order, fresh and I swear Eileen & Darrin's hospitality passes a generous dose of good karma into each and every delicious bite.

I would recommend this B&B to anyone and everyone. Staying here was a remarkable experience and I wouldn't have considered our trip to Central America the same without having met these two.

When you arrive on Ometepe you feel like you have gone back in time. The road is shared by cattle, oxen, bikes, horses, motorcylcles, and occassionally cars. Even in the dry season the island was green and beautiful. La Via Verde fit perfectly into this environment. It was extremely clean and comfortable, but in a simple way in keeping with the island. We brought our truck to the island on the ferry and spent three days exploring - including a hike of concepcion volcano. The new road is excellent - the best in Nicaragua. We were happy each evening to return to our little spot in the jungle to discuss the day with Eileen and Darrin. They are excellents hosts, helpful in everyway, but not at all intrusive. If you're up for an adventure I suggest losing yourself on Ometepe and staying at La Via Verde.

I am almost hesitant to write a review because I want to keep this little secret to myself! This was by far our favorite place to stay while in Nicaragua. Eileen and her husband took such great care of us! We had an amazing breakfast each morning, and she helped us organize our excursions each day. She even arranged for us to have food delivered to the B&B. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable, and the views are breathtaking! I hope we have a chance to come back one day! You will feel relaxed in this serene and tranquil setting. Thank you!!

Before traveling out there, please email Eileen to ask her if there is anything specific the school community needs (school supplies, notebooks, baseballs etc.). If you have room in your suitcase please bring supplies with you and support the community!

I, rarely give out "perfect" in a review, but I sat here for a few minutes before starting my review and that is all I could come up with. Look Folks, around the world, as most of you know, there are literally hundreds of places and rentals that are idyllic, great views, clean rooms, good cooks, reasonably priced, you name it, its there'if you do your research. But what's different is that 98% of them do not have Eileen and Darrin. From moment one, you are hugged while getting out of the taxi before you put your bag down, then it's scooped up and off you go to your room and a tour of the place. These two have been scratching out a living for 13 years in Nicaragua. That is long before the tourists started arriving. This shows me grit and determination, and that's what they bring to every facet of your stay. Your breakfast is unsurpassed, period! 6 choices on the menu, you pick three. She makes the yummiest Granola, homemade vanilla yougurt, crepes, pancakes, omelets and homemade bread, included in the price. I so looked forward to the breakfast sitting on the balcony staring out at the volcano, parrots, trogons, magpie blujays, iguanas, all trotting and flying by while you eat. Your rooms are sparkling clean. I stayed in the cabin in the woods and was apprehensive alone and what would go bump in the night. What went bump was my head on the pillow after hiking all day somewhere that Eileen lined up for you from some trusted friends. i listeneded every day to these two making some kind of plans for someone that many times were not even staying with them ! Constantly checking on you without intruding, they are just pure earth people with the warmest of hearts imagineable. Common courtesy, a wealth of knowledge about the island de Ometepe especially. you will be occupied indeed. They have contacts that will get you to any part of Nicaragua. Eileen set up 6 different rides for me and i had to change several and she did not miss a stride and in thirty minutes you'd receive another email and your requested change was in place. Sorry Éileen. Do not miss the kayak tour.
But the coupe de grace was about my 5th day when i contracted the Flu, I believe. Without even asking here came breakfast delivered out to the cabin, thruout the day came soups, juice drinks, guava tea that relieved my nausea; walking out to my cabin by flashlight in the evening to check and see if there was one more item, one more need. It's genuine, not salesmanship what makes these two different. They love their life, their work and they will love you if you are fortunate enough to stay with them. I repeat there are hundreds of beautiful places around the world, but they DO NOT HAVE Eileen and Darrin. They are the difference between a good vacation and a great vacation. And that is what we all seek, we just dont realize it until Eileen smiles at you and asks you how was your night's sleep. Sigh . . .Miss you guys !
