“Fascinating and worthwhile”

Kasbah Ait Ben Moro

My wife and I have just returned from a trip to Morocco, which included a 4 night stay at Ait Ben Moro. This was an unforgettable experience, particularly as our pre-visit enquiries gave rise to some misgiving. We arrived after midnight to be greeted by the Berber receptionist/manager, who immediately took us to our room. The room was basic, but spotless, with an extremely comfortable bed and spacious shower/toilet room. Also, contrary to expectation, the electricity was available for 24hrs. Next morning, the staff moved us to a larger room, overlooking the palm oasis, which provided a fabulous view. Next morning after a good breakfast, a young local took us for a 3 hour walk around the oasis, and was extremely appreciative of the 50 dirhams (£3) for his time. The following day, a local driver took us to a Berber souk in a town about 45km away. We walked round the market without any hassle or problem, unlike the 2nd part of our visit (Marrakech). The driver cost £10 for a 3hr outing.
On the following day we hired a car and driver for a longer trip - The Valley of the Kasbahs, The Dades Gorges and the famous Todra Gorge. £50 for a 10hr stint, and wonderful value for money.
As for Ait Ben Moro - despite it being during Ramadan, the staff were friendly and helpful at all times, the food had a limited menu, but was of acceptable quality. Beer, wines etc were very reasonable. The owner and his wife were a lovely couple, pretty sophisticated but extremely welcoming and friendly. Sure, we have stayed in a lot of more luxurious hotels, with glitzy facilities and grinning staff. However, it would be hard to find a better base for exploring, staffed by people who are genuinely friendly and accommodating. We look forward to returning!!

“Basic but beautiful - an ancient experience”

Kasbah Ait Ben Moro

The key thing about Ben Moro is experiencing a stay in an ancient kasbah. There are absolutley no added luxuries, its very basic, although beautifully done (bathrooms are a bit youth hostelly though).

Its absolutely miles from Marrakech (took us 5 hours by taxi), but the landscape is stunningly diverse and beautiful. When we arrived we were initially disappointed with the lack of facilities, but this was naive of us (we'd come from a beautiful seaside Rhiad in Essaouira so had been spoilt).

A local man took us on a 3 hour walk of the nearby village and we then realised how special Skoura really is (where the Kasbah actually is). It's like experiencing a medieval village. There are a number of ancient Kasbahs, although most are crumbling, yet still inhabited by multiple families plus their livestock. We wandered through the Oasis, where fruits and vegetables are grown and were met with curious but friendly smiles from the locals. This is a really really special place.

The following day we went horse riding for 4 hours - a great way to view the scenery and the Barb Arab cross stallions are magnificent.

Food was not bad at all, pretty tasty in fact, although if you are a nonmeat eater, let them know in advance as there were only 3 starter/main/desert options.

We like our luxuries and Ben Moro really isn't our scene - we wouldn't have booked it had we known how basic it is. Also without a car there wasn't much to do apart from walk and ride. But i'm extremely glad we went, i don't regret it as it opened our eyes and enabled us to experience something totally unique and incredible. I thoroughly recommend it.
