My wife and I have just returned from a trip to Morocco, which included a 4 night stay at Ait Ben Moro. This was an unforgettable experience, particularly as our pre-visit enquiries gave rise to some misgiving. We arrived after midnight to be greeted by the Berber receptionist/manager, who immediately took us to our room. The room was basic, but spotless, with an extremely comfortable bed and spacious shower/toilet room. Also, contrary to expectation, the electricity was available for 24hrs. Next morning, the staff moved us to a larger room, overlooking the palm oasis, which provided a fabulous view. Next morning after a good breakfast, a young local took us for a 3 hour walk around the oasis, and was extremely appreciative of the 50 dirhams (£3) for his time. The following day, a local driver took us to a Berber souk in a town about 45km away. We walked round the market without any hassle or problem, unlike the 2nd part of our visit (Marrakech). The driver cost £10 for a 3hr outing.
On the following day we hired a car and driver for a longer trip - The Valley of the Kasbahs, The Dades Gorges and the famous Todra Gorge. £50 for a 10hr stint, and wonderful value for money.
As for Ait Ben Moro - despite it being during Ramadan, the staff were friendly and helpful at all times, the food had a limited menu, but was of acceptable quality. Beer, wines etc were very reasonable. The owner and his wife were a lovely couple, pretty sophisticated but extremely welcoming and friendly. Sure, we have stayed in a lot of more luxurious hotels, with glitzy facilities and grinning staff. However, it would be hard to find a better base for exploring, staffed by people who are genuinely friendly and accommodating. We look forward to returning!!
