““A little TLC could do wonders””
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Maya Guesthouse is made of a few wooden chalets with fan and basic amenities such as generator powered electricity from 7.00pm until 7.00am and Mozzie nets, which is situated on the Beautiful calm Coral bay.
The chalets on the beachfront with sliding doors are slightly better than the Garden view as it gets more breeze from the sea.
Run by the ever friendly Bob the manager and his team, who also happens organize great snorkeling trip around the island.
There is also a good Dive Centre beside the guesthouse, which has value for money deals.

My girlfriend and I stayed hear for 2 weeks in may, we had a great time and had a good laugh with Bob the manager. The rooms are very basic but are clean and have mosquito net and a fan. Would definitely stay hear again and recommend it to any one.

We had a really long journey to get to Perhentian Islands, we think the beach is really beautiful and nice, but all the accomodations there suck. They ask WAY too much money for a backpacker, the boat drops you and then everybody runs to find a good place too sleep. Our last option was the Maya , the rooms smell a lot, they're old and beside, the electricity only starts at 7 P.M. It was very disappointing, when we asked the boss if we could put our tent in the garden, we still had to pay money for that?!!

Besides Maya Guesthouse, we did the day after a snorkel trip with the "company" next to maya guesthouse, it was an AWESOME trip! very cheap and we saw a lot fishes, so you have to do that!

My honeymoon trip to Perhentian Island so excited until i book up my stay for a night at Maya. Everything change from excited to worst, they don't provide towel, soap, and electric kittle. Muslim family avoid this chalet because they don't have 'sejadah' and kiblat arrow. Like Horror Chalet..facilities In This Chalet is Only smelly Bad Without Blanket.this Is The First n Last time I'm Stay Here.so Worst!!!

We stayed two nights in September because that was one of the cheaper places at Coral Bay/Pulau Kecil. I would not recommend this guesthouse to anyone. The hosts were bored and lazy and not helpful at all. As we wanted to rent snorkelling equipment we where told it was all rent out, despite there was a cabin full of snorekelling stuff. Poor service and poor English next to laziness. When we entered the bungalow we could feel the smell of mould. And when we looked at the bed we knew where it came from. The whole bungalow was not cleaned for weeks. In comparison with other guesthouses, cheap hotels this was by most the worst stay ever. I would recommend to pay a little bit extra to have a pleasent stay at Coral Bay/Pulau Kecil.

Coral Bay is the nicer side (IMO) of Kecil (see attached photo of Long Beach), being the quiet, non-party area of the island. Maya was a good home base for enjoying the beaches and water. We started off in a room at the back of the property that was pretty horrible. The floor was slanted, the door wouldn't shut, and bugs were abundant.

A few days later, when one opened up, we moved to the beachfront huts and our experience improved tenfold, though the price was only 50% more what it was in the other room. Sliding doors opened up to a deck facing the water. It was still basic, but clean, airy, and beautiful.

The shakes at Maya are the best on the beach (try the Snickers), and the staff was always very friendly. I'd return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Get the beachfront shacks! It's worth it.

Don't expect stunning service, beachvilla's or 24hr wifi access. Just be here because it's clean, cheap, 30m from the beach and it's on the best island in Malaysia.

I went to this island during ramadan and probably this made them a bit more layed back than normally. Still the Maya staff is friendly although a bit passive.

The rooms are clean and fan-equipped. Our room had a very cute house toad living in the shower drain and a house gecko protecting the room against mosquitos. Furthermore the rooms are equiped with a cold water shower and electricity during peak-hours. Thats everything you need.
