“Do not expect too much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013 via mobile

I stayed in shari la for 3 days and 2 nights when I was travelling with a group of friends. We have 18 of us so it's considered quite a big group. First of all, let me talk abit more about the reservation problem. We booked on march during matta fair and travelled on july so basically we book quite early and I asked for 8 standard room and 1 deluxe for all 18 of us. The reservation department promised to lock the rooms according to my request but somehow right 2 weeks before our travelling date, one of their staff told me their standard rooms were all fully booked and can only provide me 3 standard rooms and the rest is deluxe! I was very disappointed n pissed because all of us are travelling as a couple. By hook or by crook, I need all standard rooms. After much discussion, they finally issue a invoice with the number of standard rooms they promised. As for the room, my room is located right to the end, roughly a 5-10 mins walk from lobby but that wasn't too much of an issue to me as I don't mind walking. If you prefer a nearer room, perhaps you should make a request or book a seaview room. Cleanliness were fine. Just the water heater, the water is kinda small. Food, it was just average. Right beside shari la, there were plenty of restaurant at night like mama's cafe and amelia's cafe which serves really fresh seafood and it's quite cheap. You can choose to not eat in the hotel because you can get more choice and better food just a few mins away or maybe you can choose to walk to long beach (most happening at night) just 15 mins of walk crossing the jungle pathway. There is a back door from shari la rooms which closes at 10pm. Overall, perhentian is a really nice place to relax. Other than the reservation problem we faced, I think Shari La is quite a good place to stay.

There were 5 of us girls and we shared a bungalow. Nice with aircond after a hot sunny day. lots of choice for bfast. great bbq dinner. only that we had to walk a bit to the long beach. if the path is now cleared and provided with lights. we girls would have felt safer

I was highly unimpressed with the dangerous steps they have leading from the adjacent dive school to the toilets. A friend of mine took a bad fall.

All this could have been avoided if the hotel had the sense to keep the door leading to the toilets unlocked. For some reason, they felt the need to bolt the easy access door to the toilets from the dive centre. They're hardly award-winning toilets, so definitely not worth barricading the pathway to it. Not to mention locking off a pathway to the nearby beach through that same door.

I simply can't say something nice about an establishment that puts ego in front of the safety of the island's patrons. Poor show.

The chalets look nice though, but until they start caring about their neighbours, I wouldn't care to stay there.

Massive thanks go out to the team at Quiver though, who took great care of my friend after her fall, retrieved her sunglasses, made sure she was well and carried our tanks over those steps so as to prevent further accidents. Thank goods Shari-La has such a great dive team at their doorstep.

It was such a pleasant unforgettable experience staying at Shari La Island Resort on Coral Bay which had a superb location, by the jetty on Perhentian Islands.
The chalets are carefully arranged under the large canopy of trees and one of the few places that provided 24 hours electricity, hot water shower and air conditioner.
Their staff was very friendly and helpful in organizing trips around the island for snorkeling.
Their restaurant does amazing Barbeques with lots of choices to choose from; in the evening, in which I could highly recommend. If you wanted cheaper options, you can easily walk the down Coral Bay or to Long Beach (10 minutes away), but service and choice made it very convenient to eat here.
I definitely recommend this place and wished that we stayed longer, as this place is probably the best value option on the island.

The Perhentian Islands are a beautiful set of Islands off the East coast of Malaysia. However, for better and worse, they have not been developed to the level of other islands in South East Asia. Shari La was one of the only reasonably priced accommodations that provided 24 hour electricity, hot water and air conditioner. And these features are important on an island such as these. Staff were absent to friendly, and the housekeeping did a terrific job. It provided exactly what it said it would wand probably the best value option on the island.

It is a 10 minute walk to Long Beach, where the action is, but only a minute walk from Coral Bay, where the best food is.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the accommodation was great value and we had everything we wanted in a honeymoon destination.
Unfortunately the dinner food service was painfully slow, except for the bbq, but the breakfast was so bad that we ignored our free breakfast and paid to eat elsewhere! Who wants ants in their cereal?!
