“Great Location and friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2008

We have been at Panorama Chalet, Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil in May 2008.
The Chalets are built in a little slope, most of them overlooking the Garden. The rooms closer to the beach are closer to the generator and the Palm Tree Cafe (playing loud music all night). The rooms further up in the garden are quiter.

We booked an A-Frame hut with Fan for 75 Ringgit as all Aircon-Rooms have been occupied. The Rooms are simple but nice. They are wooden on stilts, with a double or twinbed, mosquitonet, cold water, fan, porch with chairs.
The room itself was nice, but the bathroom could have been cleaner.
There is no room service at all, staff will not come and clean your room. If you need new bedsheets, towels or toiletpaper, just go to the receiption and ask for it.
Electricity from late afternoon until 8am.

Safetybox free of charge at the receiption - but only available from 7.30 am until 4.30 pm as the Boss leaves the house and takes the key.

Panorama has rooms starting from 35 Ringgit with shared facilities, Room with fan and attached bath for 65 and 75 Ringgit. AC-Rooms start from 100 - 150 Ringgit. The Rates include one free Dinner per night. (may 2008)

Food at Panorama Restaurant was good, especially the Dinner BBQ. Concerning drinks it is BYO, you can buy softdrinks at Panorama restaurant. If you eat with several persons - Food never arrives at the same time even if you have ordered the same meal. But friendly staff and good prices will compensate this.

We have booked a snorkeling trip with Panorama for 40 Ringgit per person, snorkling gear included - excluding lunch and drink. Better bring some water.
We did this tour with Mizzy, who is a snorkling guide and also works in the Panorama-Restaurant. As most of the snorklingtrips do the same route, Mizzy just checked which snorkling spot had few visitors and went there. He also snorkled with us and showed us some nices things I would not have noticed.

I have been diving with Sea Dragon Divers, which is attached to Panorama. They offer special rates for Panorama guests.
Equipment was ok, divesite introduction was good and the divemasters Sharon, Trish and Rob are very friendly.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2008

I stayed at Panorama Chalets with a friend last week and when I left, I felt like I was leaving summer camp! I wanted to hug the staff and cry. Our room was clean, with a VERY comfortable bed. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Most of the hotels here are first come, first served. After walking Long Beach to find our hotel, we discovered Panorama Chalets. Tucked back a little from the beach, it's a quick walk to the shore. Very few Chalets/Guest Houses on Long beach have an unobscured view of the beach anyway, so don't be disappointed by that. Panorama has dorms, A-Frame Huts, and Family rooms. We splurged (100 RM per night) and stayed in a double room, private bath, with air conditioning and hot water. Sort of. The generators were turned off from 8 AM to Noon, and again from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The air conditioner was nice and cold, the water was warm (not hot), and we had a couple of chairs on our front porch to relax, read, or view the other chalets and a courtyard. This place is BASIC, as are most places on Pulau Perhentian Kecil. If you're looking for a resort experience, go to Pulau Perhentian Besar.

The attached restaurant is great! They serve western, chinese, malay, and Indian foods, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I highly recommend the BBQ barracuda, the banana pancakes, pizzas, milkshakes, and tea tarik. Sea Dragon divers is attached to the Chalets and they give a discount if you stay at Panorama. Rob was a great dive instructor and everyone who worked there was warm and friendly. The hotel front desk staff will also set up all day snorkelling trips for 40 RM!! Internet access is available at the chalets but I didn't use it.

I was bitten a couple times by mosquitos in the cafe but we never had any in our room. We did have a couple scary huntsman spiders and 2 huge Tokay Geckos in our room, and in the courtyard we saw an iguana. I was quite surprised we didn't see more bugs/vermin in our room considering the island is mostly undeveloped jungle. Our buggies were a small price to pay considering we got to snorkel and dive with turtles, clownfish, parrotfish, starfish, amazing coral, and a thousand other colorful critters. The perhentian islands are amazing, and Panorama Chalets is a fantastic home base.

  • Liked — Location was central on Long Beach, friendly staff, great food, excellent dive shop
  • Disliked — No electricity or running water from 8-noon and 4:30 to 6:30. Spiders and lizards in room. But what do you expect, you're in the jungle, baby.
