“Hotel was too simple but expensive”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

I would like to write a better review about this hotel but their service was just not good enough.

Lets start with the good points. The room was simple but offered all the necessary features like hot shower, air-con, fan and safe deposit box. The location is very good, the beach in front of the hotel is amazing with pristine water and good coral for snorkelling. The breakfast was simple but had a fair choice.of options.

Now some disappointing points that compromised the overall experience. The towels looked dirty. Anything on the hotel is more expensive than any other part of the island. The restaurant was good but we just had dinner during 1 day in our 5 nigh stay because it was the most expensive place in the island. Snorkelling trips were also overpriced, you can ask water taxis or the island shop and get similar snorkelling trips for a cheaper price. I brought a mix of USD and MYR for Perhentian and tried to pay part of the bill in USD. However their exchange rate was horrible, something like 10% worse than the money exchange from the airport.
When we were leaving the hotel I asked the reception for a small bottle of water to take on the way back. They usually leave a complementary 300ml bottle of water in the rooms daily but we had used ours on the day. They told me they didnt have any complementary bottles left and tried to sell me a 1,5L bottle of water. I explained that I had spent all my MYR to settle the bill and had no cash left which didnt help so I gave up, it was silly to use my credit card just to pay a bottle of water.

To sum up, the island is a paradise and you dont have many reasonable options to stay in Perhentian. Tuna Bay is well located and possibly offer a better accommodation than most of the other hotels. However as I mentioned above it was extremely overpriced. If they made a bit of an effort to make the guests stay a bit nicer and comfortable it could improve a lot on the overall experience.

Room Tip: Try to get a beach front room. The beach is amazing and you can watch the sunset from the room balco...

Have you been to Pulau Perhentian? If you haven't you need to schedule a trip ASAP. It is beyond beautiful, white sandy beaches and great coral reef. I particularly love this resort because it is clean and you can snorkel right at their beach to see gorgeous colourful corals! I have stayed here as a couple as well as with child (3yo). The room is spacious and staff is friendly and helpful. You need to pay for WIFI at the lobby. Food is a bit pricey but that's OK since there are a lot of options nearby. I have been here twice and have planned for another trip next year, I'm definitely going to make it a yearly affair. I will stay at tunabay again. That is how much I love the resort!

What a beautiful place to stay, pehrentian islands gorgeous, Tony the waiter & Ian the cocktail bar man, chefs on the BBQ & the entertaining reception guys really did make our trip one to remember. Food @ tuna bay was AWESOME, we tried a variety of stuff from traditional Malay to salads & burgers- as Tony says it's all good! The margaritas and half bad either. The water is amazing & tuna bay is one of the few places that has sun loungers...only thing that would be a plus is grieves in the rooms! Thanks for making our trip one to remember!

I loved the Perhentian, but must say that it is getting crowded there, from Tuna Bay Resort you see the small island and lots of construction there. Resort is quite ok, especially the food is good there and they have house reef with nice corals and tons of fishes (which are not scared of humans and tend to bite you if you get to close:)

Room Tip: Get a sea view room, the rooms that are away from the main building have more privacy

The beach is beautiful, the house reef has great coral with loads of fish (Barracuda and turtles 10 m from the beach). the children loved the platoons to dive from. Rooms are good and comfortable. Restaurant is excellent with barbaques each night. Food is very reasonable (£4-5 a main dish). Great dive school (Universal) next door. Forest at the back of resort with monkeks regular visitors.

This place is beautiful. Service is excellent and great value

Hi fellow TA travellers , just back from 7 nites at Tuna Bay Perhentian Resort . We booked this resort back in February as TA reviewers had warned us to book early & they were right . I emailed Jimmie ( brother of the owner ) & wanted a superior deluxe sea view chalet & needed to be there on 7th August ( our 30th wedding anniversary ) . We were lucky & got the last one available ( room 3a) , Jimmy was very helpful & answered my many email questions patiently . We booked the taxi & boat transfers through Tuna Bay as it made the whole process easier . On arrival we were shown to our room & we were very impressed with the resort & its location . The superior deluxe sea view chalets ( 5 in total ) are brand new & well worth the extra 50RM over the deluxe beach front chalets - difference is 1) room has a fridge 2) as well as a small verandah with 2 chairs & a table there is a patio in front of each chalet with 2 sun lounges with a great view of the house reef . These chalets are also stand alone so you have no noises from your neighbours . We met their asst manager Michael on the first day who had only joined the resort last month - he was ensuring that each guest was happy with the resort - unfortunately he left the resort days later .. We found the meals to be good value although we only ate dinner there 2 nites as it can get very busy . We had lunch at Nia's Cafe next door nearly every day - loved their shakes & rotis . We enjoyed Tuna Bays house reef but were upset about the number of Tuna Bay guests using fins ( even though there were signs saying NO FINS) I personally spoke to one family ( Chalet 5a ) but they ignored me & continued snorkelling the reef with fins on . Can I remind all TA travellers not to use fins unless diving as otherwise there will be no reefs on Perhentian for us , our children & all future travellers to enjoy .We loved Tuna Bay , had tears in our eyes when we left & would definitely stay there again .
