“Perfect Wrap up to our Malaysian Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2011

This was a really sweet spot in the small Perenthian Island.

The staff was friendly, the sea-view room was really comfortable and clean with a nice The location was really nice, you can snorkel right outside of your room. You can walk around to nearby hotel restaurants for different barbecue dinners. Diving stands are nearby. Overall really calm and enjoyable in a good way if that's what you are looking for. I can't think of something I really want to complain about.

Although not small, the resort is very cosy and intimate. Perhaps, it is due to the way it is laid lot and its beautiful landscape. The closeness between chalets does not work to its disadvantage at all.

Tall trees provide shade the resort. Wildlife is abundant - spectacle langurs, flying foxes, squirells and many types of birds!

The resort is situated at the tip between two bays and therefore has two beaches. One is just perfect! The other not bad considering it is on the channel between to island and is rather busy with boat traffic.

The staff is curteous and accomodating. The restautant was however under-staffed when we were there and so the service was not good there.

This place is suitable for people who look for a quiet and natural setting but with outdoor activities.

We have chosen this resort because of its convenient location facing two beaches (the one near Perhentian Island Resort and the one neighbouring The Reef, Watercolours and Mama's Place). We never regretted this choice and had a very good experience staying at Coral View Island Resort. They replied to the emails promptly and were very effective in managing our booking.

The resort has about a hundred cottages, some of them are located right on the beach or in a nice garden, others can be reached from the beach in 5-7 minutes by the long concrete steps. We had this last option as everything else was fully booked. Our Deluxe hill view room had a double and a single bed, a fridge and a large veranda. The room was very dark, even during the day you need to keep the light on. But on the other hand, we had a very good sleep in this dark room! The veranda faced the jungle and the roofs of the nearby cottages. Not the best view, but again, the good point is that you can relax on the veranda without many people walking by.

It was very nice to observe island wildlife right from the terrace. Everyday we saw flying lemurs (or was it flying squirrel or dog or fox?), many spectacled monkeys, lizards, some kind of tropical squirrels. We had no trouble of any kind with mosquitoes, termites, cockroaches and other unpleasant insects as there were simply non of those! I read other travellers reviews on the resorts on Perhentian and half-expected to have this problem, but we were lucky :) The staff cleaned the room and changed towels everyday. Also, there is no bad smell at the resort area!! Many travellers reported on this problem at Perhentians, and we indeed noticed it at Flora bay, but not around Coral View!!

The snorkeling on the beach next to PIR was below expectations because the corals are destroyed. However, the were plenty of fish, and they tend to be larger than in other places we snorkeled before in South-East Asia. Right in front of our resort we saw reef sharks, turtles, rays, parrot fish, anemone fish etc. But take into account that the beach of this resort is rocky and it is a good idea to bring swimming shoes. The perfect sandy beach of PIR is 5 minutes away, though. And the jungle track to the other side (Flora Bay, Arwana) is also near.

The 3 snorkeling trips we booked at the resort were great!! We saw beautiful corals and again a lot of big fish. Napoleon fish was plentiful around Rawa island.

The buffet breakfast at the resort is very poor. They had omelet, rice, toast, terrible juice and maybe one or two more dishes. all not very delicious and this is for the price of 25 MYR!! We preferred the nearby Mama's for cheap and good food. Watercolours is also OK and has free wi-fi, while our resort charged 20 MYR/1 hour!! It is definitely better to go there for food, but not for swimming/snorkeling, because of low tides when you can not swim at all! There is no such problem at the Coral view/PIR beach.

Overll, the beach near PIR easily accesible from Coral View Resort is definetely the best in both Perhentians!! It is the perfect scenic paradise beach with soft sand and palm trees we are dreaming of! And with some not bad snorkeling nearby.

Room Tip: Avoid Hill view (N877-892), and try to get Sea view instead (N316-328) for only 10 MYR more. N540-5...

We missed our first choice of Abduls but stayed here through Anjung Holidays, who were very professional. My friend went to the Perhentians 20 years ago and it must have been bliss then - uncrowded and beautiful (maybe even clean) with great snorkeling. These days it is very well frequented. Little boats speed their way over continuously and there are a bunch of places to stay, none of them fancy. The Coral view is a large sprawling resort with villas of various sizes, with multiple beds in some but none of them with multiple bedrooms or self catering. After a nightmare 1 hour taxi ride from Kota Bahru, and a fun boat ride over to the island, we stayed in a double bed villa near the dive school and looking onto the water on the Perhentian Island Resort side of the complex. It was a good location as the back ones were crammed in and some had no hot water. We had a lovely sea view, but had endless people walking past all day. The villas were very cute, like little dolls houses! They were dark inside, but that's not a problem as you only go in there at night. The native timber and woven wall/ceiling covering were lovely. Each one has a mini deck and some outdoor furniture. Our deck furniture was falling to bits, but hey, it's the sea air! There was an outdoor freshwater tap which was great for rinsing off. The bathroom was a challenge. Malaysian style, it had an electric water-heater shower that ran all over the western toilet and floor, which was a bit tricky if you didn't want to slip... There were two types of ants in the bathroom when we arrived, but I sprayed some Aeroguard insect repellant (intended for the skin) around, and they vanished. The jungle surrounds the complex and the sea frontage is on two sides - ours was the better side as the other side is tidal. We snorkeled in the very warm water out the front of the resort - average sealife and dead coral - and walked 5 minutes to the right to the beach in front of the Perhentian Island Resort. The beach is better and the sealife more prolific although the coral is mostly dead. We saw many coloured fish, two sting rays, and a black tipped shark! The best thing to do is a snorkeling boat trip to Rawa Island, the Lighthouse and other areas. Rawa Island had one area of AMAZING coral and fish. Huge dark blue parrot fish, grazing like cows and pastel coloured coral of all types...the whole area must have been like that once. I had a close encounter with a turtle, but he was a bit hounded by snorkelers...I felt a bit sorry for him! The restaurant at the Coral View is quirky. The view is nice from the outside tables and the menu is ok, and the staff are nice, but the service is so SLOW! When you order several dishes, they come out at random, so you never know if you'll have your veges before your main or what...very odd. 'Watercolours', up the beach is nice and the only restaurant that serves alcohol. BTW, bring your own duty free booze to the resort as it is dry. We did a cross island walk, which was boiling hot, but we saw a troop of monkeys, a huge monitor lizard and butterflies, which was great, but the walk ended behind a resort on another bay and it was FILTHY! Rubbish everywhere and a toxic stream that ran into the sea...yuk. The worst of Malaysian tourism. Our bay was cleaner. Overall, it was a fascinating experience, but not one where you are away from people. We had monkeys outside our villa and flying squirrels and bats in the evening and that was magical. Those memories, plus the snorkeling moments will stay with me for a long time.

Room Tip: Ask for the Perhentian Island Resort side of the complex and beach front is better.

Stayed in a standard room with a fan. This accommodation was simple and all that we needed since we spent most of our time diving, snorkelling, on the beach. Rooms are cleaned on a daily basis and the staff are friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching monkeys, flying lemurs and flying foxes. Location is great as you can explore two different beaches and take a walk through the jungle to another. Coral view has a dive centre although we chose to go diving with Watercolours (they were knowledgeable, mindful of the environment and friendly). Please note that you cannot drink alcohol at this resort although you can walk 3 minutes and have a beer next door.

I booked this resort because my favorites were already full (Tuna Bay is always full...but the best option). So I was not expecting too much. I booked with Anjung holidays and was very disappointed with them. They simply forgot to send us the taxi for transfer from Kota Bharu. We then had to wait for a boat in Kuala Besut and we were quite bored and annoyed.

However, check in at Coral View was good, staff are frriendly, smiling and look happy. The beach at the resort offers some good snorkelling. You can walk or swim to Perhentian Island Resort, it is just next door. (or next tree in this case!).

Prices are very reasonnable in this resort, comparred to some others. Food options were diversified and good. Service is very fast!! I was not used to it with other resorts.
Overall, it is a good option, though not excellent.

Standard rooms are very standard. Lots of ants in the room. Shower very basic also. But I won't extend on the room because this was not the main point of my stay in Perhentian!!

Stayed right on the beach in a funny little alpine type chalet. Nice and clean with own deck area and foot washing tap on the way in. Very quiet and very relaxing.

Restaurant is pure crap though. I suggest you walk the 200m down to Watercolours and try one of the curries there. Free wifi there while you eat too!
