“Great alternative to Redang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

It's really great alternative to Redang. It's really nice and quiet. Great place to read a book, tan under the sun without much people. Stayed there for 4 days and i really lived out the beach bum type of lifestyle. The place is really run in a family business manner, don't expect fancy high class hotel service but the service staff are all really friendly. The food there is fabulous but of course a little disappointed that we didn't have the seafood BBQ as there was too little guest around that weekend.

This place is for a relaxing holiday with no stress and peaceful surroundings. We enjoyed very much the warm atmosphere from the staff and the food was in our opinion very nice. Good snorkling condition and helpful guiding... We went with our youngest daughter (aged 16) and since we liked it so much, in a couple of weeks my houseband will visit with our oldest daughter. We think a stay for 2-3 days was perfect...

Having lived in KL for 14 years now we've had the opportunity to explore much of the sensational East Coast and have stayed in a wide range of accommodation. After reading a few negative comments here I felt compelled to write one of my own. We've stayed at Gem island numerous times now and continue to return as it is the perfect get- away- from- it- all break for those who don't want 5* concrete luxury, but wish for something more comfortable than back-packer accommodation. The resort is by far the best value for money you will find on the islands. The rooms are well-equipped and you can comfortably sleep with just the fan at night and the balcony doors open, the sound of the sea in the background. If you're lucky and it is low tide early in the morning, you may even see the fins of the reef sharks from your balcony as they feed between the two islands. Days can be spent exploring Gem and the neighbouring Kapas Island by canoe, constantly jumping off to snorkel in what can only be described as an aquarium with the amount of fish life on offer. The coral is not the most spectacular on the East Coast but there is still plenty to see and enjoy and there are many snorkeling spots all around these islands. If you like the Robinson Crusoe, desert island pace of life with lots to explore, this is the place to be. It is a back-to- nature destination teeming with wildlife. Of course there is coral on the beach, and shells and crabs. Not rubbish. It also has the friendliest staff I've ever met. The website is an honest description of what to expect but it is even better than the photos make it appear. Go and enjoy :)

We went in a group of 17 pax to celebrate a close friend's birthday - everything was arranged smoothly from booking to checking in.
The staff were very friendly and accomodating , especially Irene who was always available for help and advice .
The food was excellent with lots of variation during our 3 days' stay -unlike some resort where you eat the same food day in and day out.
The facilities like snorkeling and kayak were complimentary.
We managed to see Green turtles laying eggs and hatching-and help to release month old baby turtles back to sea.
You can book the whole island for private function such as wedding or birthday- lots of privacy.

I will definitely come back again and recommend my friends to try out this beautiful and unspoiled part of Malaysia.

This is a very very small island after 1 hour I was bored. I didnt enjoy the food which was expensive compared to the next island as was the drinks. I moved from Gem Island after 1 night to the next one where I could go for long walks, jungle trecking etc
For me the only nice thing was the chalet overlooking the water, but the hotel is much more expensive than others and even charge a mark up on the boat crossing to get there. So definalty wont be going back

We stayed at the Gem resort for a long weekend. Not sure that it even classifies as a resort. As for the Spa part, well there should be some rule about adding Spa to your name if you don’t even know what it means. Gem Island is really tiny and the resort covers almost every inch of it.
The photos on the website were definitely not taken at the resort. The only thing on the island that can be called a gem is the name of the bungalows. Each bungalow is named after a particular stone. We stayed in the Tanzanite bungalow. Nothing in this bungalow reminded me of a tanzanite!
We travelled with our 1 year old son and it was really difficult keeping him off the floor of our room for fear of what he might put in his mouth. The air-conditioning units were not sufficiently cold and when we complained that the unit might not be working properly we were told by the hotel staff that the unit was tested before we arrived and that was that.
The food at the resort was pretty good. The snorkeling wasn’t bad either and each little bungalow has a small balcony with one of those hanging chairs – this was the best feature of the entire resort. You could sit out on the balcony, feel the ocean breeze and look out over the blue water.
The beaches were littered with coral which made it pretty uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. The litter (trash) around the island is just astounding especially since you see staff loitering all over with seemingly little to do. The island itself has loads of potential if only it were taken care of and the buildings were maintained which it clearly is not.
All and all it was a pretty disappointing stay and we will definitely not be visiting Gem Island in the near future.

Loved the private island, but hotel has fab views from all rooms on the water BUT its not ageing well, inclusive package included all meals I would describe as adequate, poor water pressure, air con noisy and room a bit shabby.
Love the beach, location, water sports, friendly staff. Great weekend escape, good valu for money. I would go back just for the island ;@)

Room Tip: Get a room near lobby..
