We stayed at the Mulu Park HQ, and were booked into the Palm Bungalow. We love our room, which was sat at the edge of the rain forest, and were put the sleep by the croaking of frogs, and waken up in the morning by bird calls.
Raised wooden broadwalk were laid out in the HQ grounds and into the forest for easy access.
The Cafe was located by the side of the Melinau River, and a great place to chat with other tourists or just chill out. While the menu was somewhat limited, the cooking of the Asian dishes was superb. Breakfast was provided as part of our room rate, and it was ok.
We had very good experience dealing with the HQ office, starting from our inquiry and reservation of the room, as well as email discussion on the tours we were interested in, and the booking of the tours. The HQ staff were friendly and discussed in details on the tours we had booked, and showed flexibility too, as we changed our tour bookings a few times after trying out the first tour (the placidly named Valley and River Walk which is much more then just a walk).
We went to all 4 show caves, and our absolute favourite is the beautiful Clearwater Cave. We went off trail in Deer Cave as part of the Garden of Eden walk, and it was challenging (slippery rocks, walking in thigh high water, getting leeched) but an experience I would not have wanted to miss.
We went to the Bat Observatory twice, as the bats did not emerge the first time we went. I am glad we went again because when the bats emerged after 2 days of non-appearance, it was spectacular. We even saw bat hawks targeting the ribbons of bats.
The rainforest was great, and to our surprise, not hot or humid. We went on the Forest Canopy walk, the Tree Top Tower, the Moonmilk walk, and meander on the broadwalk when we felt like it. On our walks, we usually see a great variety of beautiful butterflies, and once spotted an incredible stick insect which looked exactly like a twig.
It rained everday, but then what do you expect in a rain forest, The rain was usually in the afternoon and usually did not last long. So we learned to plan our walks and tours in the mornings.
It was a lovely holiday for us.
