“Relaxing in a rain forest atmposhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2009

Excellent hotel surrounded by Borneo's north-eastern rain forest.
Rooms are very good but the hotel facilities are excellent. We enjoyed the large size pool with surrounding flowers and waterfall. Only issue was the waterfall slide was for children 13 years and younger - I would have loved the short ride.
Breakfast buffet will please all ages and we had a chance to eat in the Chinese restaurant and it was one of the best meals we had on our trip. And after the hot humid days the 2 for 1 happy hour was a welcome respite.
All in all a superb stay.

well. i my own option, i think sabah hotel need to improve their hotel, i mean in all angle... well it's a really nice place and peace,a place that we could relax our mind, green view....oh such breath taking....but still the room need to improve i mean the bed, pillow they need to changed it to the comfy and the new one( feather or .....) what i want to sunggest if they could put a theme for each room or each level. ya to tell you the truth the room is a bit dull..they need something to makes the room alive, fresh and comfy. And the smell to....everyone wants to feel likes they being welcome to the room and specially so they could feel roomy. well to ease their home sickness....anyway hoping something will changed b4 my second visit...all the best Sabah Hotel ..try to keep the 4 star rank

We stayed in an executive suite which i think was a mistake as the cost of it (around £70, which was more than a 5 star place we stayed at in KK) led us to certain expectations. We were therefore, a little disappointed. The place is a bit dated, the rooms not very stylishly decorated. The service is not great and the breakfast buffet was mediocre. On the plus side, it had a good pool and quite a nice atmosphere overall.

Some reviewers have criticised Sandakan as a town. We only stayed for one night (after a few days in the jungle) but we really enjoyed it. We spent the evening out at 'mile 4' (as recommended by Lonely Planet) and had a great night there drinking in the local bars.

Overall, it is a pretty good hotel. Had we payed less we wouldn't have been so easily disappointed. As it was, we felt a little ripped off.

After several nights in the jungle this was a much needed bit of luxury! We only had one night there but we wish we could have stayed longer. The room was large, very comfortable, huge bathroom, big TV, kettle etc. Ask for a room on a higher floor as there are lovely views over the pool and jungle beyond. Pool area is lovely, huge pool, even a small waterslide! And a jacuzzi. Plenty of loungers. Take insect repellant though -- this hotel really is surrounded by jungle hence there are a few bugs buzzing round at the pool. Food was good and reasonably priced (more expensive than the jungle, cheaper than a Shangri La resort). Staff were on the whole pretty good, most were very friendly, only a couple who didn't smile much!. They upgraded us for free as it was our honeymoon which was nice, though the standard rooms are pretty much the same I think, just slightly smaller. They managed to do our laundry in a few hours which was great. It is not walking distance to the town, but we knew that when we booked and it suited us perfectly as we just wanted to stay in the hotel and relax. Looking forward to returning one day!

Note -- a previous review mentioned the 10% service charge: this is not peculiar to this hotel, actually, this is universal across Malaysia & Borneo -- a 10% service charge is always added to everything involving a service (e.g. restaurants, laundry etc) - together with a government tax of 5% on most things -- so you just become accustomed to adding a bit more on to the price of something in your head. Because of this standard service charge, tips are not expected malaysia/borneo, we only left a little something extra if service had been exceptional.

We stayed in this hotel because we thought we would need some luxury for three nights after living jungle style. However, one would have been enough. The hotel is more three star than four. Our room was clean and comfortable with a bath and shower, tea and coffee making facilities, tv and hairdryer. There are two restaurants, a gym, outdoor pool and bar. Everything in this hotel is overpriced, especially given local prices. Even a pack of cigarettes are priced at 150% the local price. While wireless internet access was advertised we could never get online and the staff told us they have been having lots of problems with it. We were then charged to use the hotel pc, I feel given it is advertised if the service is not available guests should be given free access on a half hourly basis. The western style food in the restaurants is ok, but not great. Breakfast buffet offers plenty of selection but all tasted a little dry. The lady who makes the eggs is lovely, but most of the other staff weren't as friendly as many people we met in Sabah. A super chap and girl sing beautifully in the bar, but the bar was extremely cold and very empty. The atmosphere at the hotel is quite dead. We were the only two in the bar for the whole evening and almost felt guilty the staff kept playing for just us! The pool is lovely and very refreshing but again, there is only so long you can sit by a pool. Also had asked about trips to Turtle Island and never got any reply from the tour booking staff. 10% service charge is added to everything in the hotel without guest discretion. Difficult to gain access to shops or anything outside the hotel without using expensive taxis, we hardly left the grounds while there. Plainly put the hotel, while attempting to provide luxury, and admittedly is the only hotel with good facilities in the area, doesn't fit the area. Much better to stay in the non-hotel options in the area which give better access to the attractions of Sandakan; the wildlife and jungle and have much better atmospheres!
