“peaceful place with many activities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We came to the Bilit Kinabatangan B&B based on the tripadvisor recommendations for 3D/2N. It's a small B&B where all rooms are located right next to the river. We were picked up at Sepilok and brought there - the transfer was already included in the price. The staff was friendly and our guide knew a lot about the surrounding animals/nature. We did early morning, afternoon and night river cruises, a night walk through the jungle, and made a trip to the oxbow lakes. Lucky as we were, we saw an orang-utan, elephants, a crocodile, lizards, spiders, snakes... it was amazing!
The meals were tasty and there were special dishes for vegetarians.
Our stay at the river Kinabatangan was great, hopefully this small remaining part of nature stays as clean and natural as it is.

We booked 3D/2N package via Scuba Junkie at Semporna and everything went as promised. We had totally 5 river cruises and 2 jungle walks within ~46 hours. We saw lots of wildlife: many different monkeys (no orang-utan unfortunately), lizards, crocodiles, insects and lots of birds, including 2 different Hornbills. Our guide was very good at spotting animals and spoke fairly good English.

All the meals were tasty, especially spring rolls at lunch. Our room was basic but clean, comfortable and big enough. The atmosphere at the B & B was home like in a good way.

Package included also pick-up and drop-off to Sandakan/near places, so everything was included.

We just got back from Borneo - We trusted our instinct and booked with Bilit Kinabatangan Heritage despite no reviews on TA. They own the B&B (with the same name). They were also under Journey Malaysia although we didn't go through this more established site.

In essence, our requirement was slightly complicated. Our travel group consisted of a hydrophobic in her 60’s and another person with limited mobility in his late 60’s. Both needed extra ‘comfort’ that basic backpackers’ place just won’t do. At the same time, we were not interested in those heavily commercial-run places. Our fear was unfounded. Rajak and his team from Bilit Kinabatangan Heritage took care of us from the moment we landed at the airport to the moment we departed .. Every single whim!

We took a 3D/2N all inclusive tour (airport transfer, food, transport, lodging and tours) that costed us around US$120 each for a Twin Sharing Deluxe Room. The main purpose for our trip was the Pygmy Elephants. We were tracking their sightings before departing. When we got to Bilit, there were no sightings the last few days. Not wanting to be disappointed, we asked Rajak to use his native bush network just in case other villages along the Kinabatangan have sightings. True enough, we got a call the next day. Rajak’s team made all the arrangements for us for we paid as extra US$67 for the boat and boatman. For the distance that we had to travel (a good 40km down the river) and the condition of the weather then (heavy torrential rain, thunder and lightning), US$100 would have been the right price.

The B&B has dorms and Deluxe Rooms (ensuite). The rooms are basic but clean, exactly what we wanted. We came for the wildlife, not air-conditioned 5-star rooms. A major portion of our time was spent outdoors at cruises anyway, so the rooms are mainly for a night’s rest. Food is also simple and as local as one can get but the quantities are good. Western travellers will note that rice is the staple and bread is not always available for lunch and dinner. It is however available during breakfast. We requested for a more vege diet and this was accommodated for with no problem. A member of our group requested for chicken curry at 2pm and we had it for dinner!

The local guides have limited knowledge of English although they are easily understood. We found the guides to be very good (they could spot birds and reptiles in the dark while we were struggling!) and proud of their roles in the big scheme of things on this river. We saw, plenty of reptiles (monitor lizards, crocodiles), butterflies, unfortunately no sightings of orang-utans but we saw the nests, plenty of cheeky macaques, cute Pygmy Elephants, Oriental Pied Hornbills and proboscis monkeys in abundance (literally just outside our windows)! The trekking to the oxbow lake through the rainforest was amazing and we were presented with natural fish spa at the end!

We were early for the airport, so they took us to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and since it happened to be the Eid (end of Ramadhan), they took us to their family home for a true Sabahan Open House and fed us lunch - all at no cost!

In essence, we would recommend this place to anyone who believes in eco-tourism and sustainable development. This is the only native-owned and managed B&B for miles and miles. The entire operation was community-based. We are so proud to see and experience such a set up. Well done!
