I honestly was bamboozled by the options available when I looked for a company to go with to visit the Kinabatangan River. There are so many options available but the prices were so high and we have been travelling nigh on a year now so the budget was thin. We were in Sandakan and after hours of trawling through the Internet I found STW who own Bilit Adventure Lodge and the price was very reasonable, from memory it was approximately £120 for a two day one night so I booked it.
We were promptly picked up at 8am in a decent mini bus and didn't have to pick many up, two couples, so we didn't waste time, then we drove to the Gomantong Caves and spent time there looking at the birds nests and how the workers work in the conditions. The guide works for STW and is with you the duration of the trip.
After we were taken to the river and after a five minute journey arrived at the lodge, welcomed with cold towels and drinks. The views from the lodge are amazing! The accommodation, for us, was a twin room as requested with a fan and all ensuite. Perfectly good enough! We took a cruise up the river spotting primates, birds and snakes. Able to see Orangutans, silver back monkeys etc plus we watched the sun set on the river which was.....amazing.
Getting back to the lodge a buffet was put out, we are veggies so were dubious but honestly the food is good.....they even put out chips with the traditional food and some fruit for desert.....you will not starve!
In the evening you can do a night trek in the jungle which we hadn't booked, I asked how much this would be and it was so cheap about £2 each extra ....this was great fun, seeing birds asleep on branches and seening their beautiful colours, we even got to see a Loris monkey....it was arms reach from me!
In the morning we did another river cruise and after that a trek to Oxbo Lake through the jungle again. We sat on the pontoon dangling our feet in the water whilst the little fish nibbled on them.
All in all it was a brilliant experience, all food was included and was delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful, there is a great vibe about this place.
I would highly recommend it. Don't expect marble floors, these are wooden bungalows in the jungle!
By the way, we got dropped off as we were on our way to Tawau and were told to sit at the side of the road for a bus..l.it was literally in the middle of no where....but they were right....a bus came within 20 mins. Thumbs up to these guys.
