Pom Pom Resort was a diving destination for us because it was possible to get permits for Sipidan. However, when we arrived in Tawau for our transfer to Pom Pom Island, we discovered that the southeastern region of Sabah had been invaded by 300 armed Sulus, which required Malaysian military action. Although we made it to Pom Pom with no difficulty, our diving was limited to the "house reef" during a majority of our stay because the military had restricted travel to the other islands and Pom Pom's dive sites (at no one's fault). The house reef offerred nice snorkeling, but the diving took place in an area where dynamite fishing had occurred and the coral was mostly rubble. Since we couldn't get to Sipidan or any of the other dive sites, we asked Pom Pom's management if we could have our pre-paid dives refunded. Their response was a flat "no", and we were'nt given a reason. Fortunately, the last three days we were there, the military openned travel to all of Pom Pom's dive sites, although they still couldn't arrange a trip to Sipidan. The dive sites proved to be OK; I heard three explosions while diving, due to dynamite fishing that continues (although it's illegal in Sabah waters). The divemasters and boatmen that worked there were absolutely professional and very skilled (I would rate them as a "5").
We had reserved an over-the-water bungalow which was very much worth the extra money. It can get very hot on the island, but a water bungalow gets nice ocean breezes. The rooms were excellent with a large deck overlooking the ocean, big bathrooms with plenty of hot water, air conditioning, and small refrigerators. Since there were stairs leading down to the water from our back deck, we could take our snorkel gear and go from our bungalow.
Pom Pom is an all-inlusive resort with three meals a day. The food is served buffet style and is good, plentiful, and varied. They have a little bar in the dining room which will provide you with an alcoholic beverage, beer, or wine. The dining room staff was friendly and helpful. We were at the resort during the first week of March, following the Chinese New Year, and it was very quiet. Sometimes we were practically alone in the dining room, which we really enjoyed.
