“Nice Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Pom Pom Resort was a diving destination for us because it was possible to get permits for Sipidan. However, when we arrived in Tawau for our transfer to Pom Pom Island, we discovered that the southeastern region of Sabah had been invaded by 300 armed Sulus, which required Malaysian military action. Although we made it to Pom Pom with no difficulty, our diving was limited to the "house reef" during a majority of our stay because the military had restricted travel to the other islands and Pom Pom's dive sites (at no one's fault). The house reef offerred nice snorkeling, but the diving took place in an area where dynamite fishing had occurred and the coral was mostly rubble. Since we couldn't get to Sipidan or any of the other dive sites, we asked Pom Pom's management if we could have our pre-paid dives refunded. Their response was a flat "no", and we were'nt given a reason. Fortunately, the last three days we were there, the military openned travel to all of Pom Pom's dive sites, although they still couldn't arrange a trip to Sipidan. The dive sites proved to be OK; I heard three explosions while diving, due to dynamite fishing that continues (although it's illegal in Sabah waters). The divemasters and boatmen that worked there were absolutely professional and very skilled (I would rate them as a "5").

We had reserved an over-the-water bungalow which was very much worth the extra money. It can get very hot on the island, but a water bungalow gets nice ocean breezes. The rooms were excellent with a large deck overlooking the ocean, big bathrooms with plenty of hot water, air conditioning, and small refrigerators. Since there were stairs leading down to the water from our back deck, we could take our snorkel gear and go from our bungalow.

Pom Pom is an all-inlusive resort with three meals a day. The food is served buffet style and is good, plentiful, and varied. They have a little bar in the dining room which will provide you with an alcoholic beverage, beer, or wine. The dining room staff was friendly and helpful. We were at the resort during the first week of March, following the Chinese New Year, and it was very quiet. Sometimes we were practically alone in the dining room, which we really enjoyed.

Room Tip: Reserve an over-the-water bungalow.

We stayed at the resort for 7 nights in Febuary - 4 nights in water villa 2 and 3 nights in beach villa nr 16.
We had a wonderful week at this great resort on this absolutely gorgeous island. Pom pom is a very small island, you can walk all the way around the island in about 30 mins. Most of the island feels like a deserted piece of paradise, the water is aquamarine and so wonderfully clear, you could sit on the beach and watch the sea turtles swimming just offshore or get in there and swim with them - wonderful!!!!!
The resort is great and the staff are really lovely, very helpful and friendly in every way!!!!
The water villas are great, you could stand on your own terrace and watch all the tropical fish swimming around and put on snorkelling gear and get right in there using the steps right into the water from the terrace. We had water villa 2 which had a very good position, very good for sunsets and a superb view right out to sea!!!! It was very private and lovely, very tastefully decorated and with a great bathroom which you could open up the end wall so it felt like we were bathing on the terrace - we slept with the windows open and could lie in bed and look straight out to sea.The only complaint we had is that there was no sun umbrella / shade on the terrace, which was a shame because in the middle of the day it was almost too hot to be on the terrace in the sun.
The beach villa was also fantastic - we had nr 16 right at the end of the resort, which was very quiet and private, we felt like we had our very own private beach with a great shady garden in front!!!! The villa was lovely and the whole wall facing the sea could be opened up so it felt like it was an open air villa, you could sleep with the sound and the sight of the the sea right outside the villa. There were 2 good sets of sun beds outside every villa, there was also a great hammock in the front which was a great place to chill in the shade.
Unfortunately we had 2 large single beds put together as a double bed in both villas , and they were very hard and uncomfortable in the middle, it would have been good if they had had a thick overmadrass to make them more comfortable!!!!!
We did not dive but snorkled a lot and it was wonderful, I can imagine it must be awesome to dive in the area!!!! We had forgotten our own snokling gear so we had to rent it from the resort, it was a shame they didn't provide it free of charge for their guests as the pricetag per day is quite high.
The restaurant was a open air pavilion which was great, the food was good and varied, lots of tasty seafood and great deserts and fresh bakery. There could have been more tropical fresh fruits and proper fresh juices…..
They had a good selection of wines but they are very expensive!!!!
The staff in the restaurant are great and take really good care of you, a special thanks to our waiter who made us feel very welcome and gave us a great table each day!!! Also many thanks to Vanessa who helped us from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, she kept us well informed and did everything she could to make our stay wonderful!!!! I certainly recommend this resort and hope to come back soon.

Room Tip: Watervilla 2 and 5, Beach villa 16 are great choices, very private

REALLY lovely staff, really good food, beautifully maintained grounds.

Good diving centre and snorkelling.

Nice big rooms.

That said I don't think I can give a full 5 stars. Whilst everything was great there wasn't much of a wow factor, considering the price tag. I know you have to pay extra to be on an island. But it is a bit too expensive given that the rooms weren't quite up to the mark of the price tag. I am being picky, but I've stayed at other island resorts in Asia that have had more of a wow factor. For instance, we stayed in a beach facing villa. It was great, but it didn't have free water, wifi and crucially the bed was in another smaller room so you couldn't see the sea in the morning or at night.

The resort wasn't crowded at any point during our stay although apparently it was a busy time of year and a LOT of Chinese come here for their new year.

Actually I would wanted to keep this paradise to myself but in the hope it's not going to expand orso I 'm writing a review.
The Pom Pom island resort was 1 of our 2 highlights during our 23-day Borneo trip January 2012.
I choose the resor due to its positive reviews on Tripadvisor and was so glad I did.

We booked a half year in advance through a bookingoffice (down below or something) a 4 night package including all meals (buffetstyle) and the amazing Water Villa!!

I would def. recommend choosing such a Water Villa, they are more expensive but your view, terrace and your own stairs to the ocean is priceless!

During our stay we did not more than relaxing, but if you like you can book activities through the resort. We off course did rent snorkeling equipment and around the pier are turtles (big ones!) and many many sorts of beautiful fishes. I recommend to rent the watercamera from the dive resort - good camera and they burn all foto's on a dvd for you.

Well what else:

The Spa is not cheap but def worthwile!
The beach is postcard-perfect!
The views are priceless
The boatride to and from the resort is quick and comfortable!
The food is great!
The wine-choices are extensive!

Only thing that would make it even more perfect is if the resort would ban children under 12.
Than it would really be the most romantic spot!

Room Tip: Watervilla are more expensive but amazing!! Book early because they only have 5 or 6!

From the first second att Pom Pom me and my family just loved it! The staff were so friendly and helpful all the time. I've never met so friendly staff before! One of us has gluten allergy and the chef made really nice special food for her every day.

We spent five days in january there. The weather was really good! Just a litte rain one day or so. We lived in a beach villa. You should really chose beach villa if you go there. Your villa is located just a few meters from the sea and you'll be almost alone at the beach! We saw SO many beautiful turtles just at the house reef. And you can come really close to the turtles. One day we took an snorkeling tour, but it's acutally no need to do that. The house reef (which you reach just from the pier) is SO beautiful wich so many different fish and corals. We snorkeled every day and it was such an experience. No one of us had ever been snorkeling before, but it was easy and we loved it.

I could continue forever. You should really, really go to Pom Pom. Don't hesitate. It will be a great memory for life. I'm so glad i went there! GO! It's worth it.

Room Tip: Beach villa! We lived in a Beach Villa, and after seeing the whole island and the different vilas we...

Recently returned from a trip to pom pom booked by my GF

i had read the reviews briefly and seen the pics and was very excited.

Flight from KL early morning to Tawau. then a 1 hour car journey to Seporna. we were collected at tawau airport which i was pleased about and taken to the jetty, the car journey was smooth just lots of palm trees not much to see in tawau. we then jumped into a speed boat along with luggage, again boat was waiting for us and no delays, very pleased. the boat journey took around 40 mins and you could see islands after around 10-15 mins, as we got closer & closer to pom pom got very excited and we were not disappointed, we were greeted by the picture esq clearn sea, beautiful sea, welcome to pom pom sign and a welcome drink and quickly signed in and had luggage taken to room.

the island is small only taking 30 mins to walk around with only around 26 villas. we decided on the garden villa rather than sea huts and were happy.

the island is pure, clean & stunning beautiful and a kept secret feel about it. there were very few other guests during the time we went, we got the feeling not many knew about it and hoards go to Malbu or maldvies etc.. we were actually the only 2 guest doing diving, and enjoyed relaxed one to one training with dive instructor mason who was fantastic and a great laugh. we saw some amazing sea life including daily sea turtles, but the lion fish scared me to death lol

very few downsides other than maybe i'd prefer not to have had buffet style food (breakfast/lunch dinner) all you can eat. quite a few of the days seem to have grilled tuna & chips when i was hoping to get some great sea food.. but hey life too short to worry about food, but did enjoy afternoon tea & donuts after a long day dive training.

one of my best holidays ever. the sea and beach very few places can rival

Thank you Pom pom. hope see you again soon :)

My family and I spent 3 days at the Pom Pom resort (2 teenagers) and all thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a beautiful place to chill on the beach and to dive or snorkel. We have snorkelled all over the world and this was right at the top of our experiences. The water is amazingly warm and clear and full of abundant sea life. In fact we saw many things just from the pier including sea turtles, stingrays, cuddle fish and lion fish. On that note there are many lion fish that hang out under the pier, so beware as they have a deadly sting. However we never saw any on our snorkelling trips so it wasn't a problem. We did see many giant sea turtles on our snorkelling trips and a huge variety of fish and corals. The prices were also quite reasonable at about $30 (US or Canadian) per person for a 3 hour trip.
We stayed in the beach villas, which were very big and comfortable. The food was reasonably good but a bit bland compared to what Malaysian food can be. The highlight was that the baked a variety of fresh breads and donuts on site which were delicious (although not very Malaysian). The staff were all friendly and helpful although not quite as well organized as they could be (ie. not as good as the service in the Danum Valley, Borneo Rainforest Lodge).
I would recommend this place for anyone that likes a quiet beach location and great snorkelling/diving.
