“Marvellous place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

We recently stayed a few days at Bagus after travelling across Malaysia including Borneo. Bagus was by far one of the most beautiful places we have seen! It is situated at a splendid beach surrounded by seven or so bungalows. The whole place is integrated very well into the nature. The bungalows are all different in style and each is unique. We stayed at the Flying Fox. We also like Rumah Laut and the Rockhouse. Staff was very helpful and friendly. We liked the relaxed, almost family like atmosphere. Also, food was very delicious.

I've passed through Malaysia before, but never really spent much time there. Tioman looked like a good spot for a vacation and it was! We spent 1/2 of our trip at Bagus for a little bit of decadence and then the other 1/2 at another quiet resort that was more rustic for a little more local flavor. The trip was a success!

Bagus was pure luxury the minute we stepped onto Mata's Boat (hee hee). Krishna and Anish were great hosts - making sure that we had what we needed while giving us lots of space to do our thing and relax. The food was good, the views were spectacular and the drinks were just right. I had the pleasure of getting a massage from Krisha - with a soft cool breeze and the sound of lapping waves. Heaven!

I highly recommend doing some diving while you're there.
And if you hike to the waterfall, be sure to stop in to the Mukut village for an ice cream, sunscreen, or cold drink. We spent most of our hike chatting it up with the locals in the village, which was really sweet.
It's really all about relaxing and doing a whole lot of nothing... next time I'd like to stay for a day or two more - 4 days was not enough.

Room Tip: *All* of the bungalows were lovely in their own way. You really can't lose. The EagleView room w...

We spent three amazing days/nights at Bagus Place, as part of our very busy holiday schedule and we are so pleased this was one of the stops. We stayed in Flying Fox and the Boat House, both were special in their own way. We could not fault anything about the resort - all the staff were welcoming, particularly Anish and Krishna who are excellent ambassadors for the resort. From the first stage of making enquiries through Claire in the UK, to our farewell from Matta at the jetty - everything was seamless. This is a special place but please do remember, it is remote and the management work well to make it as comfortable you will need. We read the reviews carefully and therefore everything was as expected.

Room Tip: All are unique

We stayed 4 days at Bagus Place with our 4-year-old daughter. We've only enjoyed the beach and snorkeling around the jetty and it was so nice ! But the very nice staff also offers massages, snorkeling trips, trekking... Accomodation was lovely (Eagle View bungalow), neat and comfortable. Only a few bungalows, not more than 15 guests at the same time. Almost no mosquitoe, a few sand flies, some monkeys on your roof to wake you up in the morning. Food is very good.
It's a shame that Bagus Place is going to have a new neighbour-resort soon, it was a perfectly isolated and eco-friendly place so far.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Bagus in May of this year for 7 days. From the moment that we arrived and met our boat driver, we knew we were in for a great time. We stayed in the boat house which was beautiful- situated in the centre of the resort, this by no means compromised our privacy. The sun shone, the drinks flowed and the service was fabulous. For those that want to do nothing other than sunbathe (us) then you can, however the staff and island also accommodate for those that are slightly more active! An unforgettable and truly wonderful place.

My husband and I had the most amazing week on Tioman at Bagus Place retreat. The accommodation was beautiful and definitely worth 5 stars. We stayed in the Tree house, which was the smallest of the bungalows, but more than adequate for the two of us. The balcony offered amazing views of the beach and it was very private.

Bagus Place retreat has a certain charm that is really hard to find. It is small and the atmosphere is really relaxed. What they say on the website is really what you get. The food was delicious with a nice variety. We both would have liked to see a bit more fish on the menu, but overall it was very tasty. Breakfast was also good, but I would have liked to see a little more variety and something like syrup to go with the pancakes would have been nice.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt the restaurant toilets and bathroom let the place down a bit. The toilet paper ran out 3 times in the restaurant toilet and it was not cleaned regularly enough. I also would have liked some air conditioning in the room, but hey we knew beforehand that it wasn't there, and it wouldn't stop me from going again. The cocktails were really nice and Anish took care of us really well.

Tioman Island is one of the most beautiful places I have been to and it is a definite plus to get away from phones, TV and the internet. The trip to the waterfall is an absolute must. We also did the snorkeling trip where I have seen the most beautiful corals ever.

I will definitely go again if I get the opportunity!

Room Tip: I would go for the Rumah Laut as it has beautiful views and is very secluded.

My husband and I stayed at Bagus Place at the end of our three-week honeymoon around Malaysia and Borneo, and I have to say it was the highlight of a fantastic trip. We'd done all sorts of activities along the way, so really wanted the last leg to be a chance to just relax and enjoy being in each other's company, in a beautiful place - which is exactly what Bagus Place gave us.

We couldn't fault the hospitality. Yono, the owner, clearly loves what he does, and has created a unique place; and has got some brilliant staff to help him. We stayed in the Rock house chalet, which I would definitely recommend for couples wanting to get away from it all. The accommodation reflects the style of the whole place; simple, authentic, understated and with a natural beauty that fits in perfectly with the feel of the island and its jungle. Don't come here expecting posh, formal surroundings; it's much more modest than that. The bar is a wooden hut on the end of the jetty, as is the restaurant. But it has everything you need for a perfectly relaxing stay.

Apart from one trip to the waterfall, we did little other than relax on the beach and on our balcony, reading, playing scrabble in the bar and even had an in-proptu sing-along session one night with the staff and other guests. We had cocktails upon arrival, a complimentary bottle of wine as the honeymoon couple, and on the first night we were lucky enough to have a beach bbq, where the guys cooked beautiful fresh fish, caught that day. (The food the rest of the stay was great; huge tiger prawns, yummy curries, noodles - and a lot of it).

So, in a nutshell, go here! We couldn't fault it. We just wish we could go back tomorrow.

Room Tip: We loved Rock house Chalet. But they are all pretty good from what we heard. And there are only 6 or...
