“Nice beach, service can be improved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012 via mobile

Stayed from 18 til 21 November 2012. Flew in from Singapore via Berjaya Air on a propeller plane. Old plane with cracks in between windows, but obviously made it safely. Return flight was a much better plane.

It is now the monsoon season, this is my third time in Tioman and all stays have been at the Berjaya over the years, twice in November, once in February, all during the monsoon season. This trip, rain fell in the middle of the night and the days were totally dry and scorching. No signs of any monsoon during the day.It was hardly gloomy. Same as my previous trips, rain hardly fell during the day, monsoon or not.

Previous 2 stays have been uneventful. Like the resort because it is sprawled out and you get some amount of privacy, not congested, especially during the monsoon season. Check in was fast, we were brought to our superior chalet in a buggy. Room was a comfortable size, we had the downstairs ( the superior comes in 2 levels, you get either upstairs or down). The aircon broke down on the last night, but we did not bother to call for service until check out as the weather was cooling and did not need the air con. We tried room service, food was brought within 20 minutes and it was nice. First night had the semi buffet at Sri Nelayan, food is okay. 2nd night at Coriander Seeds restaurant, which is Thai and Indian. Food and ambience is good here, as per other reviews. Very romantic too. They are closed on Tuesdays.

We did not use other facilities to comment. What disappointed us on the last day was during check out. We were told to be at the lobby at 9:30am to take a shuttle to the airport to catch the 11:20 am flight out. We called reception at 9:00 to arrange a buggy to help us with our luggage at 9:15am. They agreed, no issues. At 9:20am, no one shows up. We called reception again, they said would send someone down again. Still no show. At 9:30 we called reception again and asked if they could get the airport shuttle to wait for us as we were still waiting for them to get our luggage. This time, the receptionist told us that the shuttle already left! I told her that we had been waiting for them as agreed earlier on, and she repeated the shuttle left at 9:00 am. I repeated that we were told to be at the lobby by 9:30am and she just hung up rudely without saying anything else. No more confidence, we dragged 3 luggages, 3 knapsacks and our 6 year old to the lobby. By now, quite mad, we did the check out thing and told the receptionist the buggy never showed up and hoped they could arrange our airport transfer. The receptionist then said that there would be another shuttle about 10:00am to the airport. Well, she should have told us over the phone when we called earlier and not just hang up, then We would not get so panicky about missing our flight! Out of my 3 stays at this hotel, this experience was the worse, no assurance was given, and the lack of communication is disappointing.

This is a great hotel! The best in Tioman! Everything was wonderful :the position, the sea view, the beach, rich breakfast, very large and clean rooms, friendly staff! If I wish to spend a while in Paradise, I will come back here!

This is the best hotel you can find on Tioman island. We stayed here for 2 nights and our experience has been awesome. The campus is very big, it has beach just across the rooms. Beach is beautiful too. Water is turquoise blue and very clean. It has a nice swimming pool with a sunken bar. There is a bar outside on the beach too with live music in the evening. The restaurant has great food. You can get Thai and Indian food too. The rooms are big and very clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. They have gaming room with TT and pool tables. They also provide tours around the island and for those interested in snorkelling (off course at a cost, nothing is free on this island and the hotel)

Cons: I did not find any, except that this place is very pricey. With the kind of service they provide on an island, may be justifiable. Everything is charged in this hotel. The buffet is good but found quite expensive. Don't miss the Thai restaurant , food and quality of service was quite fascinating.

Certainly looks good in the pictures, but this hotel is bit tired & not in the best condition. Don't know what the architects/property developers were thinking, when they put chalets side-on to the beach, so that none of the 4 rooms had a sea view, as the bathrooms were built on the end, all it need was a 90 deg rotation to make a lovely view. Lots of stuff here for the kids - pool slide, video/games room, large playing field etc. Unfortunately, although at most resorts non-motorised activities are free, that's not the case here & we even had to pay to hire a volleyball for an hour. It's handy to the wharf from the 1.5hr Mersing ferry trip & has a dive center, which was also handy. Beach in front of the hotel is very shallow & covered in dead coral/rocks, so not great for swimming. However, it's much better towards the dock close to the dive shop. Coriander restaurant had nice food, as did the very basic looking beachfront eatery just outside the resort (where you can also buy beer) - would recommend the dry chilli chicken dish & insect repellant.

Room Tip: If just the two of you...suggest asking for one of the freestanding chalets facing the beach. They a...

Different small bungalows with 4 rooms in each, looking like a nice village. Our romm was very nice, very clean. Two minutes on foot and you are on the beautifull beach. You can choose your chair, with umbrella and have a relaxing day. The area of the resort is big, very nice and quiet. Sport, snorkling is very well organised, you enjoy the beautifull and colored fishes as long as you like. The top of the resort is the restaurant with buffet. Food ist great, every evening such a big choice! The chief cook and his second will make for you every dishes you like. Even if you have allergy, they will cook specially for you, they want you to enjoy your stay. All the people working in the resort are nice and helpfull.

Room Tip: choose your room away from the main lodge, quieter

We stayed at room 211 recently for 4days unites on the 10th nov till 13th. Room was ok but floors were sticky n balcony was full of lizard and others dropping when we checked in. The last nite when we drop by at the fortune bar near the reception, there was only one person mending the place and extremely unfriendly. Get a sense that she was trying to get rid of the customers and she took a long time to serve the mixture for only a handful of customers. Was the worst bar to drop by for a drink. Think the worst are the bed bugs. This is probably the only time I get all the red itchy bed bugs bites among all my stays in so many hotels which leave an uncomfortable taste.

Other than that the staff are generally ok other than the staff at the bar. Wifi speed are extremely slow. All other activities even tennis court are chargeable which I find it unbelievable. No newspaper provided. The water at the bathroom basin can be extremely hot so parents wt kids beware. Make sure you take extra precaution.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and your review on your recent trip to Tioman Island.
We would like to apologize for the shortfall in service with Housekeeping and Bar. This had been brought up to attention of our Executive Housekeeper and Food & Beverage Manager for follow up.

We would like to clarify that we have checked the room and found no bed bugs. However, we would like to point out that sand fly bites does happen at some areas in Tioman Island during this time of the year.

Based on your feedback of the red and itchy swollen patch, it sounds like sand fly bites. We have scheduled treatment every morning to prevent the sand fly at some parts of the resort. Generally not everyone is affected. Insect repellent can be purchased at the gift shop.

At present, Telekom Malaysia is upgrading their internet service in the island. Local newspaper is flown in from KL in limited qualities and it is available for sale at the gift shop. We are reviewing charges for some of the land activities like tennis and kayak for next season.

We thank you for the feedback and apologize for the shortfall you may have suffered due. Thank you once again and we hope to see you return in the future.

Sincerely,

Michael Tan

It was our first time to Malaysia, first time to Tioman. We arrived at Berjaya and were pleasantly surprised. The grounds were beautiful and well kept, and the staff was friendly and helpful. We only stayed for 2 nights for we decided to stay at a few places on the island to check it out. We have been to many beaches (in Asia, Carribbean, etc.) and we'd have to say the beach at Berjaya was quite nice. Not sure why others have complained about this. As many of the other reviewers wrote, the rooms are in definite need of upgrades. The bathrooms were equivalent to a trailer bathroom and could definitely use a good clean and face lift (especially for the price and the fact that breakfast was NOT included).

We only had one major issue which really left us with a bad taste.

Upon check out, we went to pay in cash for our charges and found that money was missing. I do not want to reveal too many details about how the rest of the story went, for this would not be fair to Berjaya. However ... we thought out of good customer service (for such a reputable company) this issue would be easily settled. It was not a huge amount, but it was also not a small amount. But we definitely thought that this could have been easily settled for our charges that we incurred at the hotel were EXACTLY the same amount that we lost. We thought that the fee would be waived and case closed. Needless to say, sometime after our arriving back to our home country, the issue was not settled with many back and forth e-mails involved.

Thankfully we have a very reputable credit card company that stepped in and helped us. If we didn't have this, we would have suffered a loss. This was just a very sad way to leave our 2 days at Berjaya, and of course, it definitely soured the rest of our Malaysia trip.

We really enjoyed our time otherwise at different places on the island but we are very disappointed in the customer service provided and if we do decide to return to Malaysia, we will definitely choose to stay with another company that hopefully provides better customer service.
