“A lovely place to lounge...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

We stayed at the Libertalia for 5 nights. The manager was great, helpful and welcoming. The bungalows were lovely, the lounge/dining area beautiful and the view pretty. Just for those (like me) that likes to know I'm in the nicest place on an island - I was a little disappointed when I showed up and discovered there was a road right behind this place, making it a little noisy in the bungalows - so I explored and discovered that the road runs behind every hotel on the west side and makes them all a little noisy. We rode our bikes around the island and only if you go on the east side (more remote) or up past the main town, do the hotels get off the road. In the balance of things, the location of this hotel (walkable distance to town, near other hotels/restaurants) and the dock that takes you out to beautiful swimming water (all hotels are located on a beach with water that gets very shallow at low tide) makes it near the best on the island. AND, the managers husband is involved in the local precious stone business, working with local people and using all local products, and will design beautiful jewelry on request. I got an amazing green sapphire ring - stunning! I would recommend this place over all others on Isle Sainte-Marie (except maybe the princess Bora which was closed while we were there, so I can't comment) but if you want quiet I recommend Isle aux Nattes.

Room Tip: The bungalows on the right side of the property (when looking at the water) may be a bit quieter as...

We had a bungalow right on the beach and loved it. It was cozy, private, and very picturesque. Bear in mind, these bungalows have thatched leaf roofs and bamboo walls. They are not sound- or bug-proof at all. We had several geckos in the bathroom, and one very large spider (twice). The staff will put down the mosquito net over your bed before dinner, but you should be very prepared with long pants, long sleeves, bug spray, etc. for the evenings. During the daytime, bugs were not a problem at all.

The best part of Libertalia is the restaurant/bar/lounge. It was large, with lots of private nooks and couches for you to hide out with your spouse or travelling companions. Lots of Western music playing, mixed in with the right amount of mellow local music. And you get to relax with the manager's pet dogs (friendly, tame, healthy dogs are a rarity in Madagascar).

We had the half-pension (breakfast + dinner), but it doubled the cost of our stay and was not worth it. My wife and I could have gotten by splitting an appetizer ("entree" in French parlance) and a dessert, and possible even splitting a main course as well, as the portions were generous. The per-item prices were more reasonable than the half-pension.

Was not a great destination for sunbathing and swimming, as Ste. Marie gets a lot of rain, but we swam here off the private jetty and it was enjoyable. I wish we had been here during the whale season.

Primarily French-speaking staff, but we got by OK on their English and our French phrasebook. Bring plenty to read, and if you can leave behind a few English language novels, they need some (only had 3 that I found). If we ever return to Madagascar, we WILL return here!

Wonderful location right on thr beach and only 30mims walk to town.
Stayed 6 nights on half board and we found the food excellent on all occasions but you do need to like seafood. Breakfast was good and you could have eggs at a supplement.
The sea in front of the bungalows is shallow and a bit weedy so not great for swimming.
They have a board walk to a small island where you can swim but there are a lot of sea urchins so you need to be careful.
The owners and staff are extremely friendly and helpfull at arranging trips and just about anything else.
The bungalows are clean ,spacious and with plenty of hot water and mosquito nets.
There is a porch area with deck chairs where you can sit and watch the sun go down.
Maid service is twice a day and they will wash and iron clothes for a minimal charge
The restaurant and lounge areas are lovely and ther is a small library of books.
They have bikes and motor bikes for rent by the day or longer.

All in all , agreat place to relax and chill out at the end of a holiday spent touring madagascar.

The personnel was very nice and helpful. We loved the atmosphere in the main area.
The shore wasn´t adequate for swimming because of the sea urchins and other stuff, the water is not deep and the surface is very stony. The bungalows were ok but nothing special.
We had to book the bungalow with half-board which turned out to be a bad idea, since the breakfast was allways the same and the dinner was only good half the time, besides the fact that you have to pay extra for the better main courses.
Overall great community feeling and great whale watching.
