We visited Luang Prabang for 3 days and one day decided to rent a van to go see the caves. At first we were undecided as to whether or not we should take the river boat there, the usual way that people go to the caves, but we have young kids and a trip by car is actually somewhat shorter than the boat trip. However if time is not a constraint I would probably suggest going by boat as that is the main attraction as you can take in the nice views and good weather, especially during the cool months. Upon arrival at the place we still had to rent a boat to cross the river to the caves which are only accessible by water. There are 2 sections to the cave, an upper and lower one, and you should see both which are close to each other. There is a small entrance fee. There are many antique Buddha statues in the caves so if you are a Buddhist you will probably appreciate the opportunity to make a donation and pay your respects to them. Other than that there wasn't much to the caves and we ended up staying about one hour before making our way back to town.
