“50th Birthday”

this was the 2nd lodge that we stayed in during our safari.
it looked amazing as we got into view of the lodge!.
like a fairy tale castle on stilts.
a little dated but the best place for really close up views of the elephants and that is what I came on safari for.!
rooms were small but you only really need a bed and shower when out on safari.
every room was circular due to the shape of the lodge.
rooms were clean and food ok.

Saltlick was our last overnight stop on a four day safari and it knocked (leopard) spots off the other two lodges we stayed in. The rooms were properly appointed 'hotel rooms' with all creature comforts. Suspended on stilts above the savannah you are given unprecedented views across the landscape with animals coming and going all day and night. It was like Jurassic park at night with all the elephants trumpeting! But we didn't mind that, it was all part of the experience. We enjoyed a beautiful view from the bar terrace, accompanied with tea and biscuits, how decadent!
From the lobby you can view the elephants taking water right next to you on the balcony!
The staff were lovely, so friendly and full of smiles. We even had our bed turned down and mosquito net pulled round before bedtime.
From this lodge we were able to take part in a night game drive as well as the usual daytime drives. A completely different experience and one not to be missed. Supper was delicious and there was plenty of choice, both supper and breakfast were of a very high standard.
We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay here, it was the perfect place to finish our safari experience.

Room Tip: All rooms offer a good view

This is one magical place - the elephants, the view, its awesome.

We stayed at Salt Lick as part of our 6th anniversary at Tsavo West.
The hotel is awesome, the reception was really good and great great food not to mention that you get to eat & drink with the elephants. I have never seen elephants that close and i mean really really close.

The rooms are lovely and you get to view the elephants from most of them and they do have a tunnel that you can go to watch them.

I definitely will go back with my children for them to experience that magical view.

the road from the Voi turn off is also good with only a small stretch of rough road.

Room Tip: rooms closer to the waterhole

We stayed here for sadly only one night, what an amazing place.
We booked our safari with JT Safari's, who are brilliant, we had the most perfect, personal experience.
Our driver Teto spoke to the receptionist while we were checking in, to which she changed our room for one with the most amazing view over looking the water hole. We just sat in our room watching all the animals taking turns drinking from it.
The room was lovely, the food was really nice, our stay here though short was perfect. We didn't sleep much, as most of the night the elephants kept us awake, that didn't matter all part of the experience.
Would fully recommend Salt lick, it is the most perfect place to stay, I also recommend JT Safari's to book your trip with, it would be made just that little bit more special.

Room Tip: one over looking the water hole, you will be amazed

As my sister and I drove up to Taita Hills Sanctuary gates late afternoon, in a small blue Rav4 we encountered a herd of elephants with their babies. Terrified (not forewarned) we sat, frozen (with engine running for a quick getaway) praying that the blue "bug" wouldn't stand out! They ignored us and majestically strode across the road....what a sight, what a thrill!!! At beautiful Taita Hills we were warmly welcomed with fresh juice and cold flannel then checked in. We ambled around the charming creeper bedecked buildings, peeked in the rooms and sat by the pretty pool. We then were driven down to Saltlick not knowing what we'd find. As we rounded a dusty corner we screamed in delight, awestruck by the architecture and magnificence of the structure. Dusk had fallen and we were hurriedly ushered out of the car by experienced staff as hundreds of eyes stared back at us. What were they I asked unnerved...buffaloes! The laughing, friendly security staff armed with only torches told us not to worry as they jovially welcomed us into the lodge. On seeing the viewing deck we dashed over in time to see 3 herds of elephants jostling to drink. What did we do? We wept copiously at the sheer privilege and pleasure of seeing these mammals so close. We stared at them, they stared right back! What joy. If this was heaven then we were right in it. The rooms were pretty and just right. The view fro the rooms was heaven. Suffice it to say we NEVER slept, waking up to hear these magnificent beasts drink their fill. Words cannot describe the experience we had. So good was it we came back with more family members and are now planning a third trip next year. Nothing on earth can describe the beauty that Salt Lick is and the sheer warmth of the staff. It always feels like you are coming home. Indeed Salt Lick..January 2014 we are "coming home" this time with many more in tow and I am so excited to show you off. There is nothing like you in this world. I'm a very, very proud Kenyan!!!

Room Tip: Sleep quality is poor not because the rooms are bad...but how can one sleep when there is so much to...

Loved the lodge the food and the quirkiness of the experience but try to ensure you get a room with a view. Our room didn't look out onto the water hole which we were looking forward to. Did a night game drive here which made up for it, but like I say just be aware of the room views. Again extremely polite and courteous service.

Went on a 2 day trip to this amazing lodge in june 2012. I just loved the way they built the rooms on poles which gave me a fantastic wiev off all the elephants that came to drink water in the evening. Also the sound of big elephants in the night walking around just underneath my room while I was sleeping .Fantastic. Will deffinately go back again some day
