“Update on Treetops”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Treetops Lodge in Kenya is famous particularly for being where the then Princess Elizabeth heard that her father, King George VI. had died and that she had become Queen.

We had stayed there 20 years ago, at which time the rooms were the smallest that it is possible to create to hold 2 beds in an L shape; no bathroom or toilet.

We went again recently to show our grandson the 'historical' place, but we were warned by our UK agent that the rooms were minute and uncomfortable, and the standard overall was mediocre. But nobody had told them about the renovations. The rooms are still small, but totally comfortable with adequate space in the room, ensuite bathroom and a large window overlooking the waterhole which is illuminated at night. There is also a large viewing balcony which was next to our room. The food and service were both of a high standard, and thoroughly enjoyable. I have only marked this at 4* because of the limitation of the place (a wooden structure built around a tree!).

After reading about bad reports on Treetops. A bit primative and in the past. I can tell you it was closed for 6 months and they reduced the rooms from 100 to down 80 to include all with on suites.
My room was very comfortable, the service & food was excellent. Also the bonus of watching a variety of animals visiting the waterhole below. I saw Buffalo, Elephants, a Rhino and Hyena's.

I would recomend a worthwhile visit

Room Tip: A room overlooking the waterhole is a must

I just got back from a 12 days safari in Kenya and one of the places that I stayed was the Treetops. The hotel was recently renovated and the rooms, from what I gather, have been made a bit bigger.
That aside, I must admit that I rather enjoyed my stay there. The atmosphere of the hotel (more like a gigantic, suspended wood cabin) was really good; quite unlike anything i have experienced. The food and service was also quite good. I didn't see as many animals as I thought I would but after having been to the Mara before coming here, I didn't feel like I missed much.
Seeing that it's the place that Queen Elizabeth was at when she became queen, I highly recommend visiting the place. It's a fantastic place with rather unique bragging rights!

Room Tip: One night is good enough.

What a transformation! We had been to Treetops a few years ago and it was dreadful. What a difference now! The rooms are great, overlooking the water-hole. The evening meal was wonderful and everything about it was great. I agree, one night is enough but what a great night we had. Animal alarm did not go off during the night but we saw some great animals anyway.
Stephen, the guide, was inspirational and should be booked on a cruise ship to give talks about animal behavour.
We had asked to stay at Outspan instead of going to Treetops because no one had told us it was totally refurbished. I am so glad we went.

Good to hear you made it back to Treetops after a few years and how the refurbishment took you by surprise. Our chef continues to delight guests booked at the lodge by offering excellent meals and service. We look forward to hosting you yet again.

As previously mentioned the check in process at Outspan does seem a bit cumbersome although the lunch is very nice.
The refurb means you can now take a suitcase up to Treetops rather than just an overnight bag. Externally there has been no change although this time we were taken on foot from a clearing to the site of the original Treetops (there is now a Jubilee beacon and plaque there). We were given a welcome talk and offered an additional game drive which we did (we did it last time 5yrs ago too) although we were in two minds whether to stay at the lodge so we could watch the animals at the waterhole. It was a shame that a couple of the group of Chinese did not seem to understand the "keep quiet" instructions given in the earlier talk!!
Plus points -
The food was excellent!
Now wheelchair accessible :)
Negatives -
The noisy visitors!
Not being shown to our room which was accessed via the bar area. I had to ask someone where it was as there was no signage in the bar
Also, to a certain degree, the refurb! The en suite bathrooms mean it has lost some of the "rustic" charm of the shared facilities

We didn't seem to experience some of the problems others have spoken about, we stayed early in September and it was quite quiet which was fortunate for us. I think you come to Tree Tops with the knowledge that it is an iconic place and probably slightly over rated. However, for one night we thoroughly enjoyed it, found the staff helpful (but not excessively so!), the food is good, both our en suite rooms had a great position overlooking the salt lick and we were buzzed in the night, when hyena arrived. We had already seen a large herd of elephant with young of all ages, that spent most of the afternoon and night on the salt lick, also many water buffalo and warthogs. I think you only get buzzed in the rooms overnight if an animal appears that you have not seen whilst you are awake! At the back of the building, there is an area covered in weaver bird nests, lovely to watch all the activity of bird life there. The views are beautiful all around the lodge.
The Outspan check in and lunch was fine and as we arrived slightly late (our fault!) we did not have extra time to kill, but the grounds are lovely and well worth exploring if you do. As we were touring Kenya, we had arranged our own driver so fortunately did not have to be 'herded' en masse anywhere, which probably helped our experience! Although the Outspan Hotel is a bit of a deviation for check in, the hotel itself has a fair amount of history regarding Baden Powell which is quite interesting. I also think large groups checking directly into Tree Tops would be chaotic and noisy, so can see why it's done here and it's another chance to experience this beautiful part of the highlands. Our daughters of 18 and 20 loved it all. Tree Tops has to be 'done' and a lasting memory for me, was watching the sun rise over Mount Kenya on the morning of our departure (you are woken early for this!) from our bedroom window, with a hot cup of Kenya tea in hand. Perfect!

Your feedback on your stay at Treetops is much appreciated. We now allow and encourage guests to self drive to Treetops so that they can leave Outspan at leisure as long as they enter the park before 6.00 pm. We are delighted to hear that you had a fabulous time while at Outspan and Treetops and look forward to your rerturn.

We were lulled into a false sense that treetops was going to be amazing, We booked in at the Outspan hotel and a had a delicious lunch, with time for a pleasant wander around the grounds. The journey up to Treetops on the bus was very uncomfortable, but the journey back was even worse as the gentleman I had the misfortune to sit next to ( I was in a fold down seat in the aisle, which has woefully inadequate back support) had taken a suitcase on the coach, and would not put it on his lap, or move it so that it encroached his space!
We stopped in a clearing en route to Treetops where the guide told us we needed to remain quiet at Treetops in order not to scare the wildlife away. The huge number of Chinese in the group obviously had problems understanding this as they were loud, would not attempt to be quieter, and didn't seem to have any interest in viewing the wildlife, indeed some of them just seemed determined to drink as much as possible (whole tumblers of whiskey in one go!).
Soon after arriving, it started to rain quite heavily and this continued throughout the night.
Treetops was quite confusing. We had not been given any indication where anything was, and had to ask staff where our rooms and the restaurant were. We found the game viewing lodges, but more by luck than anything else.
The rooms were small, but adequate, and we had sufficient bedding in ours, so weren't cold.
We were told we would be summoned by a bell if any wildlife came to the water holes in the night. Unfortunately no one's bell rang in the night, though some people who had stayed up said that elephants, buffalo and some other wildlife had come to the waterholes in the night.
The food was of a good standard, and sufficient of it.
We had heard good things about Treetops, but wonder how much of this reputation is used to attract guests. Unfortunately, our visit was a big disappointment and we have no wish to return
