I have stayed with Bedouin Directions on three separate occasions in the last 6 months and always reccomend their place to friends looking to travel to Wadi Rum. The first trip we only had time for a 2 hour jeep tour and sunset, which was great, however my second two trips, I made sure to plan a full day with Mehedi in order to get the most out of the experience. Mehedi is incredibly helpful and very prompt and articulate in his responses, which is always encouraging when you're booking a trip blindly.
My second two trips, our guide was Eid, who is super great. He grew up in the desert, and has literally climbed these mountains hundreds of times. He doesn't push you too hard, let's you take breaks when you need them, and is fun to be around. During my trip in August, we did the Burdah Arch hike which is pretty strenuous but incredibly rewarding, as the whole hike only takes a couple hours. My most recent trip, we did the Heavens & Beyond hike, since I wanted to see a part of the desert I hadn't yet been to. I was with my sister, a friend and my 58 year old mother. Unfortunately, our jeep broke down a few kilometers from the base of the mountain, so we had to leave the car, along with our things, and walk to the start point. Obviously we would have preferred to not have to walk, but we had come to the desert to hike, so no one complained that much!! It would have been much more unbearable in the heat of the summer. The mountain was a little more difficult than I had understood from the description on the website, but my mom was able to do about 50% of it, and then waited for us while we went to the top. The views are insane up there, and it was totally worth the difficult climb!! We actually got a text message about 3/4 of the way up, welcoming us to Saudi Arabia!!!
The camp itself is in a very secluded area, which I love, because some of the other camps are within view of one another, which takes away from the idea of being in the desert. I have opted to bring my mattress out into the open each trip, and sleep out under the stars, which are so bright and so clear. The dinner is always amazing, and having flush toilets and running water is a nice perk after a long day of hiking (though, I think a chemical toilet might better support the number of guests using it). It's a really incredible experience overall. While I don't think I'll ever need to spend more than one day and night at one time in the desert, for those that are interested in a longer stay, I know they can accomodate.
Overall, I highly, highly reccomend this place, and am just really impressed by the personal touch Mehedi gives to your tour. Feel free to reach out to him and tell him what you're looking for, if none of the packages look quite right. He's great at tailoring the trip to you rneeds.
**It's also worth noting that I mistakenly booked our most recent trip for a Monday night, when we didn't plan on arrivng until Tuesday. I felt terrible, as Mehedi and Eid were waiting for us for a few hours, but they were so understanding and didn't penalize us for switching our reservation. Additionally, Mehedi took 20JD off our total bill (I assume to compensate for the Jeep breaking down, and the additional walking that required), which was really unnecessary, but the gesture was much appreciated.**
If you tell them you want to sleep outside, the guides will bring bed frames out so that you don'...
