There are a lot of wonderful mosques around Iran that just make you forget about this one.

“really not worth the trip”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

Firstly, I agree with the other reviewer; the name that is most identified with this Mosque is the Blue Mosque. Part of me really wants to recommend the Mosque as it is one of the very few things to see in Tabriz, but I just cannot. The restoration (if you can call it that) is so minimum and the Mosque is just a ghost of itself. I would not recommend the visit. There is a Qu'ran museum, though, not too far from the Bazaar that I would recommend.

“Blue Mosque or Black Sheep?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2011

Mosques in Iran have the irritating habit of going by five or six different names. Variant names depend of systems of translation, common monikers and cultural battles. For instance, royal mosques were often renamed after the Islamic Revolution, and the same mosque might be known as Kabud or Kabood, depending on which transliteration system you prefer. This mosque is remembered by us as The Blue Mosque of Tabriz, but if you want to follow tripadvisor and call it 'Goey', be our guest.

The blue part refers to its late 15th century tiling, which has been painstakingly restored by the government. This mosque was left in ruins after a massive 1779 earthquake, with only the main portal standing. Rather than 'over-restore' the mosque, they have left cracked and missing panels, which gives some sense of the damage.

The black sheep part refers to the Black Sheep Turkomans, who ruled Western Iran in the 15th century, having taken over parts of Iran from the Mongols. They were a squabbling, bellicose bunch, those Black Sheep, but they managed to produce this lovely mosque before being defeated to the White Sheep Turkomans later in the century. In this case, truth really is stranger than fiction.
