I stayed with a group of friends at this hotel. It is expected that if one travels in a tour group, the hotels will always be in desolate places & this is no exception. I must commend the staff for their customer service. The hotel has wifi which is a plus. The rooms are pretty spacious too.

However, the hotel looks appalling and in bad need of makeover. The air-conditioner is really antique and I had difficulty getting it to work properly. The sheets doesn't appear to be changed daily. 3 light fittings are defective. There are gaps between the door and frames and they certainly needs replacement. The paint in the balcony is peeling. The towels have some weird smell.

The breakfast is good though. But I cannot imagine myself coming back to this dated & dirty place again.

We stayed at this hotel for 9 nights as we had to wait for our flight out of Singapore and we figured it would be cheaper than staying in Singapore, plus we needed to save our money for our next stop Australia.

Useful things we didn't know: $25 US dollars for a 30 day visa on arrival per person. It also costs about $40-60 Singapore dollars to get a taxi from the Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal to the hotel and takes 1hr 15-2hrs.

The free hotel shuttle service to and from the ferry is not for the above, there is also another ferry terminal south of the island which is worth a look into if you plan to visit this part of Bintan. (15mins from the hotel)

There is not a lot to do Tanjung, there is no pavements which makes it hard to venture out anywhere local.

The hotel do offer a free lift to anywhere local, we got driven to there shopping mall a couple of times. Not a great deal there, cheap clothing, supermarket and a kids arcade.

We paid for a standard room but got upgraded. The room had fridge/freezer, kettle, nice size bed, as another has said, there sheets do not fit the bed properly. They also had a generator which was used quite often. Hotel wifi is brilliant, they have a box on every level. The food was touch and go, sometimes it was good, we'd order the same the next day and it would be not so good.

The staff are very attentive, sometimes a bit to attentive, there seems to be loads of staff and they all just seem to stand around. They're English is not so good, when ordering food or trying to arrange a car to take us to the mall, it was always a struggle and we had got the wrong order a few times.

The pool was nice, a little dirty when we arrived but they seem to use no chemicals so rely on topping the pool us with fresh water everyday. The fitness room was also okay, had a pool table.

If I could go back I would probably look at staying here for only a few nights, and stay north where it's a lot more touristy. It did serve its purpose and we had no where to spend our money so we saved a lot. Just very very bored at times. Also being English brought a lot of unwanted attention when out and about, also in the hotel, the staff would stared a lot and have little whispers, we find that rude, but this is just how they are I guess.

Room Tip: Try to stay in the main building.

I stayed here for 2 nights.

+ ve:
* free pick up to and fro from the hotel
* superior room is quite ok
* cable tv with movies
* air con is new and adjustable
* very friendly staff
* prompt housekeeping
* hotel gift upon leaving.,pastry and water bottle.

* water heater in the bath room is intermittently working
* no small table to have your meal inside the room, no safe locker.
* comforter look ugly and old
* power sockets very loose connection. You must shake the plug to get connected
* breakfast time is limited. 7-9am. If u go after 8.30 forget about it most of the items are gone. No top up except the rice
* never inform the free shuttle to the city malls

Overall: 3/5. Worth the money. No big complaints.

Room Tip: Choose the Superior room at level 4.

We have stayed here as a group of 10 friends at the bungalows/villas (not the hotel proper). The hotel is advertised as 3 stars and I normally don't trust these ratings but actually I'm pretty sure some years ago when it was built it was a proper hotel. There is a nice swimming pool area, hotel restaurant which is for most dishes reasonably priced and the food is pretty good. Breakfasts included in the price are excellent, I would not expect anything more. Pelangi is located close to the outskirts of Tanjung Pinang, so it is relatively quiet but at the same time there are some basic amenities close by. Just in front, there is a small warung with some decent padang food. Within walking distance (walking toward the city), you can find some more warungs, some with very nice food, also some street food, a pharmacy, etc. That's a major advantage over staying somewhere far from the city where you have to rely on not necessarily so great and cheap hotel food.
Staff are very friendly, their English is reasonably good for Indonesian standards.
We used hotel transportation twice to go around some places on the island. I found the service very good but quite pricey, but I suppose these are just the prices in Bintan which is generally more expensive than major islands.
The rooms are of adequate size and are well equipped, maybe if I was a bit picky I wish the bathrooms were a bit more modern but really, they're still OK. A nice surprise was to find a set of toiletries like shampoo, toothbrush, etc. What I didn't like is that even though there should be Wi-Fi internet, we couldn't in any way connect to it throughout our stay (not that we needed it so much). No problems with getting the air-con work.
Overall, this is one of the cheapest places on Bintan island (especially when you consider the crazily overpriced resort area in the north) and what you get for your money is really good! Do not expect luxuries, do keep in mind the price that you pay. Expect a decent service, good room and nice food.

Let's start with the positives.....
The food in the restaurant was lovely and really good value for money. Friendly staff and nice pool. and that's where it ends.......

The journey from the ferry to the hotel is closer to 30 mins, not 15mins as stated on the hotel website. When you have a 3 year old with you and the aircon in the vehicle is not working and there are no seat belts as you dodge through the crazy traffic of Indonesia, it is not a pleasant journey!

The family room was spacious, enough room to share with the many ants and other insects that were crawling throughout the room. The aircon was not working in the room so we called maintenance. When he opened up the unit to reveal the rusty and worn internal parts, it was no surprise. He managed to get it working, but no sooner had he left then it tripped the electric. Clearly there was an ongoing problem. You could smell the mouldy air that was being circulated by the aircon and we all woke up the next morning coughing and wheezing. Thank goodness we were only there for one night!

It would have been a bonus had the bed sheets actually covered the whole mattress, instead of sleeping on partly exposed mattress that I’m sure many others had slept on previously!

The common areas were also filthy. There were dead flies and insects lying on window and stair ledges and the carpets were gruby and worn.

The décor in the restaurant left a lot to be desired. The chair covers were great for catching crumbs and other waste food, it’s just a shame they didn’t remove the previous people’s droppings before seating a new customer. The table was covered in a plastic sheeting that stuck to your elbows. But as mentioned earlier, the food was really nice and the waitresses were really helpful explaining what each of the dishes were and making them less spicy at our request.

We received a courtesy lift in one of the hotel cars to a local shopping mall. The mall was great, lots of bargains and an amusement area for kids and big kids alike! The driver recommended that we would need about 2 hours and said he would be back to pick us up at 7pm.
We waited and waited from 7pm but there was no sign of the driver. It was now late and past our 3 year olds bedtime. By 7.45 it was obvious that the driver wasn’t coming, so we found a kind shop assistant who found the hotel phone number on the internet and rang them for us. Eventually at 8.15 a different driver turned up.
When we got back to the hotel, the original driver was laughing and joking with his buddies in the car park and the reception staff just kind of shrugged their shoulders when we vented our frustration to them! At least the late night saved our daughter from an extra couple of hours breathing the mouldy air in the room!

Be warned – there is nowhere to safely walk to from hotel, there are no pavements on the roads and the traffic is crazy.

There was no sign of the Kids play area advertised on the website and we couldn’t find the pool room/gym area that is shown in the photo on the website.

A few weeks before our trip, we emailed the hotel to ask a few questions. To be fair, they were very prompt with their replies. One of the things we asked was whether we would need to pay a departure tax upon leaving Indonesia. The answer was no, only an arrival tax. This was completely the wrong advise. Make sure you keep 13,000 Rupiah per person to pay the departure tax.

We do feel quite bad for writing such a critical review as the staff were really friendly and some tried very hard to provide a good service. However, the things we experienced had to be mentioned as they come down to pure hygiene, cleanliness and safety.

The only reason we give this hotel 2 instead of 1 out of 5 is because of the great restaurant food.

Tanjung Pinang itself was also very disappointing but I’ll write a separate review on that.

I'm a regular visitors for this pelangi hotels since the old days when it started as a chalets hatel and now become resort and hOtel.for so many years what i'm always visiting the same hotel as it quite convenienly to me as i used to lead a groups there to visit Bintan island for just a short trip from singapore,so far the service for so many years still up to date,and always smile at you when arriving at the jetty and the hotel.

I was there for 5 pleasant day, mainly because I was being treated like a King of France in Pelangi and safe travel around the lower half of the island. Compliment to their friendly and attentive service, am getting a lot of attention and care by the staff though out my stay.

First off, the pick up/transfer as mentioned by previous posters, is just great, convenient and best of all it's free, you get picked up on time, given the fact you have informed them in advance your arrival time. If you doubt about nobody coming to pick you up, there is a hotel within walking distance called Hotel Furia, it's their sister hotel, just ask the receptionist to get you a transfer to Pelangi.

We were upgraded upon check in, and led by their friendly staff to the restaurant for some welcome drinks, as recommended by previous posters, we had our first dinner there and good grief, being a chef myself, their food is just exceptional, very authentic Indonesian food, must try their "satays"(skewered n grilled meat) and seafood! The hotel offer to safe keep your passports for you, and will return it upon check out. A decent size pool, well maintained and a gym next to it, however the kids pool doesn't look too inviting.

The room is simple and basic, but all the appliances are functional, satellite tv with over 100 channels, from local, and international channels. Air-conditioned and hot shower. Very comfortable bed and they clean you room as long as you put out the sign or inform them at the reception before going into town. They provide transfer into town, and pick you up from town by waiting at the lobby of Hotel Furia.

Wifi Hotspot in the rooms, lobby, restaurant and even by the pool, and fruit platters are being served all the time without you asking for it, either when you're just chilling out by the pool, having a drink at the restaurant, or even waiting for your transfer at the lobby, you'll be constantly being looked after by their attentive staffs. Breakfast is great, although mainly local buffet, feel free to ask them for eggs and toast, and this is where you will get concentrated real fruit juices! Oh, they love to put a scoop of ice-cream on your juice, if you don't like it, let them know.

Although we loved the food so much, but it is always nice to head down to town, and look around at the market, and there is a restaurant in town called "Restoran Sederhana - Masakan Padang", a 2 story restaurant, very clean and attentive crews and great authentic Padang cuisine, for a very reasonable price, best seats on the second floor, overlooking the sea. Great food and go ahead and try out everything especially "Cincang"(tender beef stew).

Besides, there is a place called "Melayu Square", it's by the sea, open air, and local hawker food.

You can arrange a reasonable return transfer to Tricora Beach or Lagoi Beach in the north, Lagoi is very commercialized and touristic I assumed, so we went to Tricora instead, we were there during the weekdays, so we had the whole strip of beach for ourselves. You can rent one of the private huts and there are showers and changing room that you can use for a small fee. However, get yourself some snacks or drinks in town before take off. You can hardly find any shop/resto here in Tricora beach.

Although there isn't really much to do here in the southern part of Bintan, besides we are not very keen on the northern part as it looks like a fenced up gigantic amusement park & resort for us, we just love the culture and rustic Indonesian part of Bintan, people here are just genuinely friendly in general, they don't stare at you too much, and they really don't bother you too much, I feel 100% safe, even wandering around at night, so do walk around and you will find places to sit down for a drink(non-alcoholic) with the lovely locals and go to a spa where they offer traditional Javanese massage n spa. There is a KFC and PizzaHut, but I guess you don't come to Bintan for that.

Likewise, let the staff know before hand when do you need a transfer back to the jetty or airport, so they can arrange the transfer for you in advance. For those who travel via Singapore by ferry, although you may have paid for your return ticket, you still need to get your ticket "confirmed" and claim your boarding pass at Bintan before departure, tell the staff when will you be heading back and give them your return ferry ticket, they will sort it all out for you, and pass you the boarding pass a day before. So even that, they will take care of it for you, don't forget it is only 30USD per room per night plus we were upgraded.
