“Beautiful and so statuesque”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

Though extinct, it is nevertheless awesome as a sign post to the climb to Bromo. Most people do not climb it but if one does the views are amazing.
The climb up is very difficult, wear proper hiking boots and do not veer off on your own as it is very steep and slippery in places.

stop at this mountain during way back from Penanjakan, after back from Bromo Sunrise tour. it is great place to take picture. The easiest way to go is by Jeep or motorcycle. A day before Bromo tour, i had ask Ojek (local people who ride tourist with motorcycle) , from Yoshi Hostel (at Sukapura) to here, and he charged 70,000 rp.As it is quite far from Sukapura, the price is reasonable. Walking also is one of way to get here but it will be time consuming.
Jeep, max 4 person, 250,000 rp.

“Fun challenge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

The Bromo area is much to beautiful to visit it for only a few hours with the standard Jeep tour and leave at 9 am. For fit ppl I recommend to explore the area on foot, and so avoid the crowds with their noisy Jeeps.
From behind the toilet building at the foot of Bromo crater, several small footpaths are leading to the steep mountain slope of Gunung Batok, where they will join together. The path is going straight up to the mountain, all the way to the top. Both hands and feet are needed to scramble up through loose sand, while holding on to roots or bushes. It will take about 45 mins to reach the flat top, where there are great views onto the Bromo crater and around the whole Tengger caldera.
It's also possible to camp on top of Gunung Batok to enjoy a wonderful, quiet sunrise. You'll have the place for yourself. There're plenty of flat surfaces for tents and a campfire.
Don't forget where you got up the mountain, as there are many places wich look similar as you want to go down the same route.
