“A very creative and fulfilling week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

My stay at Lakeview Hotel was most luxurious and so inspiring!
The setting was beautiful; overlooking a huge volcano, with a lake in the valley
and mountains to the side. Every day the sky shone brightly, changing colours,
reflecting in Lake Batur.
Our group of 4 arty ladies were made most welcome, we enjoyed sketching and
painting the wonderful landscape and taking in the local sights.
The food was absolutely delicious, fresh fish and meat
dishes and plenty for the vegetarian. My favourite was the fish fresh from the lake.
Kadek our host was very friendly and gave us lots of information about the area
and Balinese culture.
The atmosphere was always relaxed and friendly, we felt very welcome.
I would certainly recommend this hotel, it has much to offer the more
adventurous holidaymaker. Volcano hikes and bicycle tours are available.

Room Tip: All rooms beautiful.

Thanks for your encouraging review. I'm glad you enjoyed our first week-long art retreat. We will be hosting the next one in March. Most of our guests do come here for the outdoor activities, particularly the sunrise trek up Mt Batur, but we are also increasingly popular with families and couples who come to simply enjoy the fresh and cool mountain air.

This year we are putting together a calendar of activities for our guests, starting with yoga, tai chi, as well as painting and writing retreats.

Wishing you all the best for your ongoing art projects, especially the batik painting!

A wonderful hotel positioned opposite Mt Batur and the adjacent lake. The view from my room was 'gob-smacking' - it was quite possible to sit for hours on my balcony marveling at the beauty of the surroundings. Add to that, really excellent Indonesian food - organic and creative - with a million flavour sensations. Kadek, the General Manager, was extremely professional and helpful and his influence could be found in all his staff who were unfailingly kind and attentive.

I was attending an Art workshop with Sandy Infield (Art Hideaways), a talented artist in her own right and a gifted teacher. We attempted (in my case ! - I was a rank beginner) to draw or sketch or batik in the case of the experienced artists on the course, in the morning and then went on excursions in the afternoon. We had the advantage of Sandy's visual eye and Kadek's knowledge of the area and thus we visited magical places to sketch and experience local activities, from a moon festival ceremony in a local village to a Monkey and Fire dance in Ubud. We also visited hot springs and pool not far from the hotel. Heavenly to relax in the warm, but not too warm, water as the day grew hotter. Always deliciously cool in the evening. I heartily recommend Lakeview for a family holiday, a holiday with friends or if you want to get away for some 'thinking' time. Hilary Linstead

Thanks for your compliments, I will share them with our staff.

Our next art retreat is scheduled for 18 to 23rd March 2013. It's the week after Bali's New Year / Day of Silence called "Nyepi" (12 & 13 March) when the entire island plays possum (pretends to go to sleep by staying indoors, at home with the family, no lights allowed to be seen from the outside).

Guests coming on one of our retreats (painting, batik, writing, yoga or tai chi) do tend to get more of my attention because I play host at the beginning and end of the classes as well as at dinner, but I also do my best to attend to all of our overnight guests (except those who prefer their privacy, of course).

We look forward to hosting you again, be it at another retreat or on a family holiday. Our team look forward to the opportunity of spoiling your grandchildren together with you :-)

This is the place to be if you want a cool and relaxing reprieve from the hot and humid touristy Kuta. I'd arrived after a 2 hour or so car ride from Kuta plus another 3 hour plane ride from KL. It sounds like a rather long drive especially after the plane ride but totally worth the drive up to Kintamani if you ask me.The cherry on the icing; the jaw dropping view that greets you when you step out of the car and every morning might I add too. The hotel is perched on a slope overlooking Lake Batur surrounded by mountains so you can imagine anyone's reaction when they first set eyes upon the breathtaking scenery. I had signed up with artist, Sandy Infield of art-hideaways.com for a package that included fun art/batik lessons in the mornings followed by inspiring sightseeing and visits around Bali in the afternoons. There is never a dull moment because everyday there was some activity planned or impromptu otherwise, say if there was a full-moon ceremony at the nearby temple not to be missed, Sandy would whisk us there in a heartbeat. The hotel is run by charming art enthusiast Kadek, who's family owns the hotel. His warm and personalised service can be felt through his staff, who try their best to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. I would make this place an annual getaway. A place to get away from all the stresses of the rat race, a place to feel inspired and recharged! As I was!

I'm glad you enjoyed our first week-long art retreat. We've scheduled the next one to be next March. We also have a writing retreat next October as well as Yoga & Tai Chi retreats in the pipeline.

Thanks for your supportive feedback on our food. I'm traveling at the moment to get some fresh ideas of what to do with our amazing local produce in Kintamani.

We look forward to hosting you and your family on your next visit.

When you tire of Bali's lowland heat and want to experience something spectacular, a trip to KIntamani is the ticket. As you ascend to the volcanic rim, keep your eyes ahead to experience one of the world's spectacular sights. The best hotel is the Lakeview a massive hotel perched on the mountain side.
Kadek the manager, is all intent on making the experience something special. He has introduced organic vegetables and new menus which can be enjoyed in the resident's restaurant. Rooms are comfortable, if not luxurious, but there too, he has plans for the hotel's future.
Many people like to climb Mt Batur in time to view the sunrise, an other worldly experience, although for me, the best was a trip to Trunyan an ancient village that lies below on the lake's edge. We then visited the cemetery - a special place where these traditional people keep their dearly departed. A row of skulls will greet any visitor who makes his way there.
After the Trunyan visit, it is rather special to drive back to the hot springs where you can luxuriate in hot baths and enjoy a massage in relative comfort.
It is all a far cry from the southern beaches and a grand experience. Kadek will help arrange any tours for a reasonable fee.

Room Tip: All the rooms look over the spectacular caldera of volcanic Mt Batur. I prefer the older section aw...

Thanks for your vote of confidence in our service, it means a lot, coming from a seasoned Bali-based expat. With the rainy season settling in, more guests are opting for the cultural activities and visits to the hot springs then nature trekking. It's quite an experience in itself watching the rain move along the landscape below - we are quite high up we are sometimes above the clouds.

I'm glad you liked our food, we are focusing on more local ingredients, although we do produce a "Western" menu. Our deserts, in particular, are a harmonious combination. Guilt-free! Our vegan pumpkin muffins, for instance, is produced with organic pumpkin, coconut oil and palm sugar. It's so good that my grandmother has added them to the daily offerings she makes to the shrines at our ancestral temple.

We look forward to hosting you on your next visit to Kintamani.

My family and I stayed at Lakeview for the first time this month and had a wonderful time. The rooms are great and overlook the volcano Batur as well as the lake. It is such a special view and the all rooms and the restaurant look out onto it. The staff are really lovely and helpful. Make sure you also grab some of their home made chutneys and pastas to take home, the spinach pasta was our favourite!

We definitely recommend doing the volcano climb for sunrise, it is well worth the effort and Lakeview can help organize it for you with a guide.

Thanks for visiting us with your family. It's always a pleasure hosting people from other parts of Bali and sharing stories about how the island is developing. Please don't let the heat keep you down ;-) The cool mountains are never that far away.

During quite times our team are encouraged to make pickles, jams and preserves, as well as cookies, bread and pasta. It's still a very small production. Thanks so much for your encouragement.

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and hike up Mt Batur and liked our homemade products.

We stayed for two nights plus late check out, which was part of our ten day bali honeymoon. We had been in contact with Kadek, the manager prior to arriving, as he helped us develop a package of activities etc for our stay. The driver, Mr Punya, picked us up from Amed and took us on a brilliant ride through the quiet hinterlands of Bali, bringing us to Lakeview.

Unfortunately we we both sick for 80% of our time at Lakeview so we did not get to do any of the activities that had been pre-arranged. However, we still got to enjoy some terrific food and herbal teas in our room, it is better than the buffet. The staff were very friendly, the only thing being that not all speak great English so if you don't speak Indonesian or Malay you might have to get some help with translation. The manager Kadek is a true gentleman and he was very responsive to any issues. He also went the extra mile to ensure we were as comfortable as possible while we were sick.

The truck noise is an issue but there are very few trucks beyond 9pm and it gets pretty quiet during sleeping hours.

Wireless Internet is plentiful at the hotel but not available in the rooms. This is something that we like - that is - having access to wi-fi in the room, and could be something for consideration there in future?

It's a pity you got a stomach upset before coming to Lakeview and needed a few days RnR because of it, but I'm glad you felt much better after your stay with us.

The thick walls in the deluxe block make it difficult for wireless internet to penetrate, and putting up transmitters in front of the rooms would ruin the view, so we are working on providing cabled internet to the rooms.

We do hope that you can "resume" your honeymoon with another trip to Bali soon!

Not the best place to stay if you're particular about cleanliness. The view of the place is absolutely amazing especially in the morning. One thing which really bothered me were the pests and the overall cleanliness of the room. Since I was travelling alone. I didn't mind the uncleanliness. But I know of many people who would have a problem with the cleanliness at this price. But it's not all bad, overall my experience was pretty good.

FYI:
The hotel offers pretty good packages for Mt Bathur trek, unlike other cut throat prices around the area. The average price is about 350k rupiah, you shouldn't pay more than 500k for a guide and the trip up per person.

Thanks for your candid review! Like many hotels in Bali we are having a pest problem at the moment, but we are lucky that it is localized to the older (28-year old) standard building located near the forest at the eastern corner of our property. We have recently done a spring-cleaning and attempted to tame back the forest and surounding gardens, but we are in the tropics after all and we expect a huge growth spurt with the coming of the rainy season.

We highly recommend guests who need a higher level of sanitation to check into our deluxe rooms or one of our suites. These are in a more modern building where we can have a much better control over what / who can come in and out.

Wishing you pleasant travels in the archipelago.
