Ms Loan is friendly, kind, and probably the first tourism industry operator we encountered in Vietnam who "gets it." We were not cheated! We were not lied to! This should not seem amazing, but once you've traveled Vietnam you will understand why it is.
The hotel is out of the town center, which is really nice. (GPS coords if you are lost: N 20°13'04.1", E 105°55'50.7") At night, you hear crickets and so on buzzing away. During the day, birds calling in the wetlands. (You may also hear the early dawn propaganda broadcast, but this is in many parts of Vietnam, no fault of Chez Loan) Our bathroom was open Vietnamese style and enormous - they could probably install a shower cubicle to keep the water under control, but I never saw one properly installed in Vietnam, so maybe for the better without it.
The food is decent, but best to stick to the Asian dishes.
We went with Ms Loan's recommendation of taking a boat ride in the back parts of Tam Coc. I enjoyed it, but my wife didn't since there was some construction taking place. We had our own bikes, but they have loaners. TAKE THEM and get her advice on some places to ride. Tam Coc is an amazing place to cycle around - some beautiful little alleys and streets through the karst scenary and quirky villages.
Ms Loan greets the day (and you!) beautifully and gracefully dressed in traditional clothes, and seems to me (a strictly English-speaking-only-Aussie) well versed in French. French guests helped translate for us :)
When we left, she kindly gave us a beautiful little gift. We were having lunch on our exit from the park, and she zoomed up on her scooter to hand to us some laundry we had left behind. This would never have happened at any other place we stayed at in Vietnam.
