5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

This is the only ancient tower still standing and survived from Changish Khan to Red Army. 105 steps to the top. Fantastic view from the top. The tower is standing between 2 beautiful Madrasa. Must visit.

“The only building Genghis Khan spared when he sacked the city - why?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2011

The answer is, supposedly, that he was so impressed by the sheer size and height of the minaret, that he sank to his knees in respect and ordered it spared.

Given how totally everything else around it seems to post-date Genghis, I am inclined to believe that there is some truth in this legend, and I can see why he was impressed: the minaret is both massive and elegant, not a common combination, and it is decorated all over with intricately patterned, unglazed brickwork - reminiscent of the older Ismail Samanid Mausoleum on the outskirts of town. The Karakhanids really outdid themselves with this building, and its current setting, between the towns main mosque and one of the madrasahs that has started teaching Islamic theology again since Uzbek independence, is both historically pretty and modernly engrossing to boot.
