“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We stayed in this delightful hotel for 15 nights - we were on a motorcycle trip to Mongolia and had an enforced stop in Bukhara whilst waiting for spare parts for one of the bikes.

So, this is a relatively new hotel located up a little side street between the Oybinek Mosque and Ibrahim Okhund Madrassah at grid reference N39.7739, E64.4228 (N39° 46’ 26”, E64° 25’ 22”). The lobby is attractive, and the rooms well appointed with TV (including satellite), fridge and a/c (which works!). The bathrooms (shower over the bath) receive a special star as they are all well presented, clean and with constant hot water at a decent pressure. Oh, and not to forget the free wi-fi.

The internal courtyard is pleasant enough to sit in, and shaded when the sun is blazing. Drinks (non-alcoholic) are available from the lobby.

Breakfast is served buffet-style in a delightfully cool subterranean (but well-lit) dining room. The choice is not huge, but it is well prepared and the salads can be trusted. There are many restaurants suitable for lunch and dinner nearby.

The hotel will also do your laundry and arrange trips. You are right in the historic centre of the town, and all the sights are within easy walking distance. The cost was $55 a night by the way, including breakfast.

And finally, and probably most importantly, the staff are kind and welcoming. Their English may not be perfect, but don’t let that put you off what I think must be the BEST hotel you could wish for in Bukhara, and one of the MOST WELCOMING anywhere.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, but the ones across the courtyard especially so.

Hotel Porso is a small hotel conveniently located on a quiet side road away from the busy main road, about 200m from Lyabi Hauz and the beginning of the pedestrian zone (“tourist mile”). Our room was clean, spacious, and equipped with a tv set and a minifridge, but lacking a second chair and a rack to put the luggage. Breakfast was good with a variety of foods: yoghurt, fruits (melon, water melon, grapes, apples), cheese, sausages, tomatoes and cucumbers, bread (not fresh), some sweets, coffee, tea. But the mattresses are EXTREMELY hard. If you are not used to sleep on wood or concrete, don't go there! We only found some sleep the second night after requesting a second woolen blanket which we folded three times and put it on the mattress. The staff is very friendly and speaks some English. The hotel was included in our two-week tour through Uzbekistan, so I do not know the rate we paid.
