“Charming Lodge and Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2009

Mount Gahinga is a lovely lodge, with comfortable, eco-friendly rooms and a terrific staff. It is a pity that the gorilla family has moved, as this makes this location (1 1/2 hours from next gorilla trailhead) too far for convenience.

Mount Gahinga Lodge was the second stop of three of Volcanoes Safari's lodges. This property surprised us with its simple beauty. The mountain gorilla's have moved across the invisible bordger between Uganda and Congo, so seeing them here is unlikely at this time. We did, however, track and find the elusive Golden Monkey. This property is truly lovely, situated at the base of a beautiful volcano; the gardens are beautiful and well tended. The banda's are round - different than those at the other two locations; totally comfortable. Lodge manager Japheth Ndikuryayo led us on a village walk - past fields of potato's surrounded by stone walls, goats, farmers, children, beautiful views of rolling terrain. The silence was amazing - no airplanes, few motorized vehicles, certainly none to be heard here, no motorized farm vehicles. Children followed us on our walk as though one of us were the Pied Piper - they were as curious about us as we were about them! Our walk ended after 3 or 4 kilometers at what Japheth referred to as a village. We were treated to traditional dancing by the villagers. One of many highlights of our trip.

I regret taking so long to post my review regarding this fabulous lodge, but here goes!
Last year after a long recovery from cancer treatments, my husband surprised my with the trip of a lifetime to the Congo area, something I have always wanted to do.
We stayed for 4 nights to go searching for the gorillas. We were taken to the Congo side of the park at the southern end of Bwindi National Park (1 hour drive). We were the only tourists as far as we could see, and so were able to spend an unforgettable day by ourselves with the gorillas. A lifelong dream, and something I will never forget!
The lodging itself is absolutely beautiful, with natural thatch and unbelievably well maintained gardens. They grow alot of their own food for the lodge from these gardens.
The huts were so comfortable and we found them to be overly adequate considering our location. The service was the most professional of any hotel we visited, as well as being very friendly and always looking for a way to share more with you. The staff spoke the best English, so we never had to worry about the language barrier, which was challenging in other areas.
The surroundings were breathtaking and beautiful, a highlight after a personally difficult year.
I would definitely recommend this as a great base for gorilla viewing away from the crowds of northern Bwindi. Trust me, it will be the experience of a lifetime!!

  • Liked — Friendly service, great gorilla search in Congo
  • Disliked — Can get cold there, so be ready.

Stayed for 2 nights to go gorilla trecking. As the gorillas had moved to the Congo side of the park we were taken to the southern end of Bwindi National Park (1 hour drive). Here we were the only tourists and so had a magical day by ourselves with the gorillas.
The lodge is very pretty, all thatch and with beautidul gardens from which some of the vegetables served in the dining room are sourced. The bungalows are comfortable and warmer (lower altitude) than the other lodges that we stayed at in Bwindi and Rwanda. The food was the best of all the three Volcano Safari Lodges (Virunga Lodge & Bwindi Lodge) and the service the most professional as well as being very friendly. Probably because the staff spoke the best English of any of the 3 camps.
Hot water bottles, clean long drop toilets and bush showers all add to the appeal of being in the African bush.
The setting is not as dramatic as Virunga but is still beautiful.
A great base for gorilla trecking away from the crowds of northern Bwindi.
