“Fantastic place”

Tharaburi Resort

Jul 22, 2008

This is a very nice resort and the people that manage it are very very kindly.
It's very near the historical Sukhotai, ten minute walk. There you can rent for bicycles.
Rooms are very cleaned up and furnishing is of good taste. Place is silent an relaxing, dipped in the nature.
Restaurant is good but with poor dishes for vegetarian.

We stayed there two nights in a deluxe room after a tiring trip from Chiang Mai.

I think this is the only descent hotel in Old Sokuthai and I would really recommend everyone to book this hotel rather than staying in New Sukothai.

The room was very spacy, clean and nicely decorated with a terras giving to the inner court of the hotel. The hotel is in a green well maintained area with a little pool. Food is nice aswell and cheap.

The best about this hotel is without any doubt the service. The manager (at least I assume he was one) was always around and and tried to honour every request.

The second day my wife got ill. In less than 10 minutes after saying this to this man, we were in the hospital with the driver (waiting for us till everything was done).

as for the comment of another tripadvisor member that there is lack of tv programs. The hotel offers a dvd player for rent at a reasonable price.

It was a very enjoyable stay and I would like to thank the man and his staff for the service.

“Something needs to be made clear...”

Something needs to be made clear about this resort; it is a place of two types of accommodation. There are the de-luxe rooms costing an arm and a leg and the cheap rooms in the older wooden construction part. We booked through Agoda, whose website made no distinction between the two types of accommodation at first gkance. On the basis of the glowing reports on Trip Advisor, we chose this resort rather than others and were amazed that Agoda had it with a room rate of just 750 baht, so we thought that we would upgrade to a superior room for a few baht more. It is only when one looks at Agoda's site again that one sees that there is a button for other room types and it shows de-luxe rooms at a far higher cost.
We had booked our room at fairly short notice and then had decided that my wife's father should come with us and stay there too as the rates were reasonable. My wife and father in law are Thai. When we arrived to book in after a lengthy car journey from Bangkok, it became clear that our room was in the wooden part of the resort. We were further horrified to find that there was no en-suite, the bathrooms being across the corridor. They had not recieved the booking request for my father in law and had showed us a room similar to ours. They had said that because it was a walk in rate, the room was 1300 baht. My wife discussed it with them and they agreed a price of 1000 baht. It only became clear to me later that evening when we had returned from eating dinner out, that the room that was on offer to him was not the one of similar size to ours, but a very much smaller one of only about 10 foot square. I was livid, as that part of the resort was just a glorified guest house and therefore 1000 baht for a room without an en-suie was very overpriced.

So for anyone wishing to stay here, be aware that if you book the cheap accommodation, you are in a room with wooden walls no thicker than your average garden fence panel. Therefore, you will hear noise from traffic on the road about 40 feet away. You will have no en-suite facilites. If you like that sort of thing, it was clean and no doubt very charming. You pay your money and take your choice, but I appear to be the first to point out the pitfalls of the cheaper accommodation.

But I have another complaint. There was quite a nice swimming pool, but it was unusable because the water was so green that one could not see the bottom. Having a relaxing swim after a tiring drive might have improved our temper, but there is no excuse for making the pool unusable through neglect.

Our stay at the Tharaburi Resort was a wonderful experience. We booked a Deluxe room which is one of their nicer rooms and paid about $110.

On check in, we were greeted by a very nice staff who quickly moved our luggage to our rooms and offered to help in any way. They arranged our transfer to the airport the next day and advised us that we could rent a bicycle from behind the restaurant for less than $2 a day. There were maps of the location to help us get oriented and we were on our way.

The hotel is located very close to the old city. Surrounding the old city are some small markets and shops that do not overwhelm the feeling of being located in an otherwise isolated location. There are local type restaurants, massage parlors and barbers, trinket shops as well as the invaluable 7-11 all less than 1 km away from the hotel. Renting the bike and riding for the day is definitely the way to go in my opinion and the location of the hotel is ideal for that. You will be somewhat isolated from the New Sukhothai, but there is nothing there that will not be at one of the other city destinations in thailand in a bigger or better way. Enjoy the quiet and solitude of Old Sukhothai.

The restaurant was a gem. I normally would not eat at the hotel restaurant, but this hotel is not at all like a typical chain hotel. The restaurant had authentic food at a very reasonable price (most dishes were between $3 and $6). We especially enjoyed the frozen fruit drinks after the hot day on the bike for less than $2 each. We had a lunch and dinner at the hotel where every dish was delicious and there were enough dishes that looked good on other people's plates to last us a few more days.

The room was not a cookie cutter sort of room. It had interesting design features, a comfortable bed and a great bathroom. The shower was great!

The pool was a bit small, but mostly empty when we were there. The water was somewhat warm, but extremely refreshing. Do watch out for the black tiles around the pool which heat up really badly in the midday sun.

Although many features of the hotel are "better than 5 star", the hotel is great for what it is - a delightful place to spend time in thailand, but have it still feel like thailand.

Stayed here for 2 nights while I toured the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I think this really is the only game in town if you are looking for something relatively nice.

I booked a Grand Deluxe Room, each of which has a theme with a color. Mine was white. The room was very clean, spacious enough, and has a terrace facing the inner courtyard of the hotel. The bathroom comes with a nice rain shower as well as a jacuzzi tub. Very nice.

My only complaint is the lack of decent TV programming.

The hotel is only a short distance from the historical park, and walking distance to the night market. This is very convenient.

Lucy and Neng are very friendly, and will try to accomodate all your requests.

The food here is so-so, but then there aren't many choices around the old city.
