Got a surprise when I checked in here, the last thing I expected in the hills of Northern Thailand, was resort featuring African themed decor ! Before you say that's not for me, let me assure this hotel is great and the decor is not over the top. Each of the twelve chalets is set in their own private walled gardens on a little island in a carp filled stream connected to the dining room and reception by a suspension bridge. The property is immaculately maintained. The chalets are spacious, comfortable and the decor is very understated. The staff are so charming and helpful. There is a resort tuk tuk will take you into the centre of town anytime you like free of charge. And phone and they will collect again. But it's only 10 minutes if you choose to walk. Only think to note as hotel is small, dining is a bit limited.
Love this hotel and understand why so many others have rated it so highly. Dining is a bit limited I shoo

Room Tip: All the chalets are equally nice

This hotel has something special. A warm and helpful reception well set up to guide you to local attractions. A shuttle tuk tuk to take you anywhere you want to go and pick you up again. Walk in past reception to the sound of the stream running through the resort and see the welcoming semioutdoor restaraunt and bar. The staff are all warm and friendly and wait on you in a gentle, respectful and attentive way. We had the honeymoon suite and it was immaculate and clean with a lovely sense of style. We had an outdoor bath they would prepare for us and a private courtyard on the stream. Breakfast included and generous. At night the light the stream with lanterns....just enchanting We were sorry to leave

This was the most romantic hotel of our trip. We loved loved loved the villa we got, and enjoyed the stay. The grounds are beautiful. We never had to wait for the tuk-tuk, it was always ready to take us in to town, to the airport, wherever needed.

Cons:
- reception doesn't speak great English, so be patient.
- you're in a small hut in the middle of forest. Yes, there will be bugs.
- like every other review, it could definitely do with a pool.
- the tuk-tuk is only around til 9 PM. Not much to do in Pai after the anyways, but with taxis scarce, be ready to walk half a mile or so.

Other tips:
- DO NOT take Aya bus, no matter what. Either fly, or get a private driver and take Dramamine.
- if you aren't renting a motorbike, there isn't that much to do other than walk around the tiny downtown and eat.

Room Tip: Island Honeymoon

We stayed there for two nights. We arrived late in the afternoon with a rental car from Chiangmai. From the first to the last minute it was five-star service.
It rained on the first day. So after a drive from Chiangmai we decided to stay at the resort and dine in the restaurant. The food was very tasty and it was not expensive at all. For breakfast there were four different menus. We had thai menus which were really tasty. Very satisfied with the service of the restaurant.
Our honeymoon room was beautiful and so ramantic. Wifi worked well, nice tv and you can also borrow free DVDs for at the reception. Well the pictures say it all. What you see is actually what you get. The setting is beautiful, trees, water, flowers ... everything in balance and very peaceful. Love love love...
On the second day we went to the walking street in the evening and made use of their free shuttle service which was very easy. When we finished we called the resort to pick us up. Within 5 minutes, the tuktuk was there to take us back to the resort.
If you are looking for a romantic resort in Pai do not look further. Pai Island is highly recommended.

I have to give an honest review here and selected this hotel after the wonderful reviews on trip advisor. Pai Island is set in beautiful natural settings just outside of Pai (a 10 min walk from meeting point). It has soft lit pathways from the entrance with a stream hugging the accommodation, accessed over a walk bridge. Beautiful flowers and colours with lovely fragrance hits you as you walk to your villa.

Access to the villa is with a massive padlock securing a wooden half door. The villas are private and beautiful. The photos on this site show off the villas well. Very comfortable massive bed, tea and coffee facilities, tv and DVD player, chaise lounge and panoramic view of your private surroundings. Well equipped mini bar with reasonable prices. Gorgeous smelling toileteries and separate shower and toilet with glass walls. Go outside, to find an outside shower, table and chairs, party bath encased in a straw roof and a separate gateway to your own terrace with chairs overlooking a stream.

Without doubt, this is a hotel that would appeal to newly weds or romantic lovers but also to those people seeking solace in privacy. There is a luxury feel to the villas that reflect on the price.

So why do I feel that there is something missing?. I think the other reviews have accurately stated that this hotel needs a pool. It lets the whole resort down somewhat. And the reason I say this is because I thought the outside bath was a jacuzzi bath when in reality it was a normal large bath. The reviews intimated that it was a spa bath or party bath and so to not have this was disappointing.

It's a minor point but you need to take it into consideration as many hotels now offer a pool.

Other points include the following:

The restaurant offers a good selection of food and drinks. Main meals about 100-130 bhat. Cocktails 89 baht. Glass of wine 80 bhat. Food quality was reasonable and not astounding.

Breakfast was basic. American breakfast was not great, but toast was good and drinks plentiful. Not buffet style but order service

Tuk tuk service available to take you into town is a lovely service. They forgot to pick us up one afternoon and I was not happy and pointed it out. Very apologetic response and when we went down to dinner, they gave us 2 complimentary drinks to say sorry. Not needed but very much appreciated and highlights their desire to put things right.

I will say that it is very odd that upon checking in to the hotel, you are presented with the credit card slip already processed for signature before you have even seen the room. It's the first hotel that I have stayed in the world where I have paid before using the facilities!!

Overall, it's a great location, marvellous villa and accommodation and a real find. Would recommend staying there but I don't think it really is 5 star

A wonderful surprise to find this 5-star hotel in the serene Pai, the little village in the northern part of Thailand. The hotel decors is quite unique with artfully rustic flairs that comes with second-to-none hospitality, staffs were very helpful. Seeing the stars in the Pai Valley from your villa, you will find it is truly magical.

The restaurant offers very good Thai food plus the usual continental cuisine, I can assure you will never be disappointed.

We truly enjoy every moment of our stay at Pai Island.

Do not miss this resort if you are going to Pai. The design of the Villas is amazing, they are totally private and when you are inside, the walls are just windows of beautiful flowers. Lovely bedding, tasteful color combinations of white linen and curtains and wood. Beautiful bathroom, private exterior party bath, your own private river zen chairs. Sweet staff, nice breakfast. Wow! We'll certainly be back!
