“I really cannot understand the criticism of this hotel.”

Holiday Inn Mekong Royal Nong Khai

Apr 13, 2008

This was my second time at the hotel in six months (two trips to Thailand from Australia).. I was travelling with a Thai national each time .
I think most people are expecting "Western " type hotels with everything laid on - tea and coffee making facilities, 24 hour room service etc. This is Thailand, not the Western World..
The view from our 8th floor room was great, looking out over the river and bridge.
Staff were good and courteous and spoke some English (I mean, once again, this is Thailand, out in the Sticks!).
Transport to and from was easy - there are always tuktuks outside and I got them for 50 Baht each way.
Breakfast (buffet).gives a much better choice than I found in most Thai hotels.
If you want to go to riverside restaurants (where you can get a really good feed with beer for 20 to 30 bucks for two, get a tuktuk and pay him a little extra to wait, or come for you later.
If you are used to 5 star hotels, then this is not for you (but then, where will you find a 5 star hotel in the region?)
I will be there again in July, this time with my 15 year old - and I have learned Thai this past two years (I am 65 years old!) . I do not anticipate any problems.
I had no problems with hot water, cleanliness or anything at all.in the hotel
Did not use the pool at all, but it was there.
I will quite happily recommend this hotel to anyone.

One of those concrete bunkers that were built in the 90s and has become derelict already. The initial investment done, nothing seems to be posible anymore. The hotel is in need of a few tons of paint. The furniture is designed to look impressive, not for practicality. The hotel has a musty smell of wet concrete. The first room we were sent to had not been made up yet (around 0400pm). The curtains in our rooms were in tatters. The batteries of the remote control were empty. The water in the bath room was just warm enough for a bath. The food from the room service had to be put outside. We asked the staff to pick it up. They promised every time. In the morning it was of course still there. That is how many hotels in Asia breed rats on all floors. The swimming pool was decorated with plastic bags. The location is well away from everything, I felt like a prisoner. The staff does it umost best to complicate everything untill they find a solution at their price off course.
I have experience with hotels in Asia. n the morning, before breakfast, I gave the key at the reception and told them to check the room and the pitiful minibar, so I could leave immy after breakfast. Of course they did not. I was (nearly by force) stopped by a doorman who refused to release my luggage. There were about 15 guests in he hotel and in 25 minutes they had not managed to check the room. The breakfast was standard, this means they think they can dump everything on a few tables and you eat cold eggs and sausages. There was a lady who fried fresh eggs, she did not even know how to do this. At a table, a few local politicians had a kind of meeting/celebration and were extremely noisy.
In short: avoid when posible
Positive: quiet in the night (most Thai hotels do not offer that anymore), good beds. The view on the Lao-Thai friendship bridge.
Negative: the rest.

PS: I wonder how this hotel can get positive comments. I travel a lot in Asia and I have found worse that this only in India. I am ready to visit the hotel with any professional tourism critic.
PPS: I have not see anything mentioning Holliday Inn in this hotel. That must be a mistake.

“Don't Have Expectations”

Holiday Inn Mekong Royal Nong Khai

This was my third stay at the Royal Mekong; any connection to Holiday Inn must have been in the distant past by the way.

The rooms are huge and clean.
The bathroom is clean and water is usually hot.
TV is terrible; one English channel and it's a shocker.
Pool is huge.

That's the good bit folks.

Breakfast is perhaps the worst in Thailand; I've never struck such terrible service from sullen, unhelpful staff.

It was OK two years ago, but the staff have been let go and it was left to a couple of staff to cope with hundreds of guests.

Tables were cleared of dirty plates etc, but were never wiped down and thus it was always a lottery to get a cleanish table.

A repeat customer, I learned from my stay previous. First day here I went to tesco and bought my own supplies; milk, mueseli, yoghurt, orange juice.

The hotel supplies corn flakes but these were terribly stale.

At lunch time and dinner time the restaurant is empty for very good reason; service and food is just awful.

I had a hamburger that had the texture of cement. My fries and salad were good.
My Thai companion ordered a hot/spicy seafood dish and was sick the next day.

I was there for New year's period and admittedly the hotel was packed, but there is no change even in quiet times.

I will not stay here again; I'd sooner try a guest house.

If you are Western and looking for a good hotel experience then stay away. If you're prepared to bring your own brekkie and eat out at all other times, then the large rooms and great pool and of course, the very cheap price, will probably earn your tick of approval.

Mekong Royal Nong Khai is quite ok for the money.
Stayed for only one night, the Hotel is typical Thai standard for away from the usual farang (foreigner) tourist route. Large, slight musty smell, the usual grande foyer, and the rest is OK.
I give it's dues, the room swere quite good, large and everything worked ok, hot water was good, the rooms where clean, cable TV. No problems there. Breakfast was a surprise, it was quite good actually.
The Hotel is right on the Mekong, so had a nice sort of feel about it.
For about 2000bht for a deluxe I would stay there agian.
Its a bit of a drive into Nong Khai town main drag, but its close to the bridge if you are heading into Laos from the frendship bridge.
Not bad really, if you did not have transport i think something closer in would be better, as there are many smaller hotels through out Nong Khai, there are only (2) LArger Hotles, and this is one.

I want to see the Fireballs and this was the only hotel that had rooms. There is no wonder why they had rooms. They charged double their going rate. The hotel staff was poorly trained and did not have accurate information about Nong Kahi, the Fireballs or transportation. The floor in the room was dirty, you know like it stuck to your feet. The hotel manager did not return phone calls. There was no hot water until I demanded some three or four times. I asked for them to help with booking transportation to the Udon Thani airport and they did not know who to call. They told me there was no street food in Nong Kahi. The breakfast was the low end of okay. If you are in the neighborhood go to the 6th floor and look at the ceiling. That represents the cleanliness of the hotel.

The hotel says they are 3 star. I give in 1. This is a place to avoid.

All the good reviews must have been written by the hotel itself. The location is out of town and can be expensive and is inconvenient to go back and forth. The pool furnature is non existent.
