Koh Tao is a great island, a unique place in a unique country. Pitty so much construction is going on in the island as it could loose some of its charm
Talking of Charm, Charm Churee is certainly one of the best places in Koh Tao.
Dont expect 5* comfort, Koh Tao has nothing similar to this (thank god for that) but Charm Churee is a great place to stay for several reasons:
Great location with really nice views and close to Mae Had village
Super Snorkelling, perhaps one of the top three spots on all of Koh Tao
Big Spacious Villas with all necessary commodities
Nice Spa , good value for money
Friendly staff
etc.

I am surprised to read some of the negative reviews on this site, perhaps written by some nutter expecting some posh Phuket or Samui style resort, Koh Tao is not about that and I hope it keeps its spirit and does not become a Chaweng style place
As for the "bugs", I thought they were less here than in Samui or other islands, so again, no idea as to why people complain, use the repellent sold at reception and you should do just fine.

My only "complaint" would be the steep prices when compared to other Koh Tao resorts

All in all a great place and one I would recommend to anyone.

First visit 13-15 April 08, superior beachfront 35D
Second visit: 13-15 July 08, superior beachfront 23R

We loved this place very much and will return again and again (but only if superior beachfront is available) !

I think for the price we pay, the superior beachfront rooms or even panoramic room is very very value for money and unquestioned to recommend to friends. Any bigger rooms and therefore bigger prices, I'm really not sure I would or not.

Big families or couple who looks for a private high end villa may find it overpriced since the stuff is not in so premium grade.

For the rooms and resort in general, I think although it is uniquely and boutiquely decorated, many stuff in the room is not of high quality yet looks lovely in its local style. Also, although the reception staff is super friendly and very nice, some service staff like at restaurants are not well trained as they really are local local and may be express in an unprefessional way at times.

So I would say this resort is charing for it's lovely and unique design. Their efforts to make guest happy is noticeable. It may not be as professional but I'm sure the better one might not have as good beach on this small island OR their rooms are just as others and you ended up remember nothing.

What I love most are
- private beach, truely crystal clear water and full of fish, yet 10 minutes walk to market !
- free snorkeling gears and not too bad spots to see
- lovely room design and open air bath
- lots of room amenities newspaper!, flashlight, safe, daily fruits, magazine, coffee, umbrellas, etc even in just a superior.
- spa !!! you have to try especially at sunset. Imagine an aroma massage at the far edge of the bay and sea breeze. 900 Baht net only!

Who should stay away
- expect everything high standard and proper
- easily annoyed with kids even though they are not noisy as you probably want a perfect kidless honeymoon.
- knees or weight problem as it "requires" alot of mountain walk.
- "I cannot live without a TV ! (dunno in other rooms but no TVs insuperiors

To us, we call it a super hideaway gem for us.

Good luck.

We spent four nights at the the Charm Churee Resort and were quite disapointed. The location itself was beautiful and we loved Jamsom Bay - very good for snorkelling. The accommodation was clean and we had a lovely view - but very, very overpriced! We found the food at the Chaba Restaurant awful and the service was not much better - we only ate there the first evening and that was definitely enough - the music was more than we could stand (outdated by 40 years - Middle of the Road etc) - we even asked them to put some Thai music on but this was ignored. We spent the last three evenings at the Sensi Paradise Resort and what a difference - super food, service etc.
We will not be staying here again but would definitely stay at the Sensi Paradise. All in all a : - ( experience.

  • Disliked — Chaba Restaurant and the awful food!!

My wife and I booked the Charm Churee "Resort" and stayed in June as part of our Honey Moon. The price for the hotel is extremely high considering the amenities provided, particularly when compared with other hotels on the island.

We negotiated a discount rate by paying cash up front (something we later regretted because there was no way to get out of the hotel).

Service was minimal at best. The staff made us feel as if we were an inconvenience or burden. The waitress at the restaurant rolled her eyes at my wife as we tried to order dinner. The food at the restaurant is sub par at best and the free breakfast is online with a 2 star business hotel in the US. When we checked in we asked if there was room service, the lady at the front desk told us there was, but there is no way to order considering that the rooms have no phones.

The Room was clean, as it should be however there were numerous creatures that we learned to share our space with. My wife was particularly fond of the tiny frogs in the bathroom. The outdoor bathroom left a lot to be desired. For a few hundred bucks US per night in Thailand, one expects a little more. The bathroom does have a water heater but by the time the water moves from the spout to your body (Outdoors) it has cooled to ambient temperature.

The Location of the Hotel is nice, the beach is beautiful. They claim that it is a private beach but by Thai Law, no beach in Thailand is privately owned. The Beach at Charm Churee is just particularly hard to get to and if you are not staying at the hotel be prepared for them to ask you to shell out 100 bhat for the privilege of sitting on their beach.

For the amount of money one will spend to stay at this hotel, unless you are really in the mood for rustic seclusion, which some may be, i would recommend staying at another hotel.
You can get a similar room if you are diving through many other resorts for around 1000 to 2000 bhat/night.

I spoke with an insider on the island and apparently there is a rivalry between staff members and the guests get to pay the price for the in-fighting.

One last issue worth mentioning - Restaurant Schedule.
Breakfast Served from 7 AM to 10 AM at Chaba Restaruant, near the reception.
The Elvis Bar - 10 AM to 6PM (usually locked up by around 5PM)
Chaba Restaruant for Dinner 7PM to 11PM - if you arrive later than 9PM don't expect much in the way of quality or service.

The hotel grounds and location are beautiful. The rooms are rustic (no phone, no room service). From the exterior the resort appears quite lovely. The people who work there I am sure are genuinely nice people but they are lacking any sort of training or skills in the Hospitality Industry.

I would not stay there again, I would not recommend Charm Churee to anyone.

Me and my wife stayed at the Charm Churee in July 2007.
We lived in Panorama Room .
Everything was great for us and we were surprised having read some negative responses. We had been in various hotels in Thailand (Ko Samui, Phuket, Bangkok), maybe some things were better, but the Charm Churee was on the top of our own rating.
The place , where the hotel is situated, is very beautiful. The hotel has its own bay, where only the guests of the hotel spend their time. That’s why there are few people on the beach. The place is very convenient for a swimming and snorkeling. The sea is very quiet and transparent, so even small children can safely play there.
On the beach there is a place where you can rent some equipments for swimming. And they are all for free.
Our villa had a large bedroom with a huge bed. Also it had a big balcony with a fine view on the sea, two bathrooms (one of them was open aired).
We enjoyed the meal, we often had a dinner in the Elvis Restaurant and we had a supper in the Chaba Restaurant.
The staff of the hotel was nice and very friendly.
For having better wi-fi ( the internet connection was not so good in our room) we often came to the reception with our notebook late at night. The operating time of the staff was already off, but in spite of it they opened the summer-house for us if it was raining. Moreover we were very pleased when the security guard brought a chair and lit a special stick from mosquitoes.
The Spa complex of the hotel is magnificent. We liked it more than the Eranda Spa on the Ko Samui where we had been before.
