“Calm small hotel with a lovely pool and decent restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for 6 nights and were not disappointed. We had chosen a room with a poolview/seaview and would advise anybody to do so, the garden views are not that interesting. With the poolview you can lie in bed and see the pool, the palm trees and of course the sea.

The staff at this hotel were very friendly, with one exception, the head waiter which never smiled and always seemed to be disappointed at something. Other than that the staff helped us with all arrangements - taxi, trip to Ko Phangan etc. The hotel holds a little stock of snorkelling equipment that is free to borrow for the day.

The rooms were clean, beds comfortable. Only sligth downside was that the plumbing smelled slightly in the bathroom, other than that the bathroom had a nice sink, and a large shower.

The hotel's restaurant is very cosy, placed outside under a roof, overviewing the pool and the sea. Service could be a little slow sometimes, so you might have to go and get the waiters to get them to come to the table or to fetch a menu. The food at this restaurant is decent, not very strong in taste but good, and the prices are reasonable for a hotel restaurant. They also make very good drinks that you can enjoy in the restaurant, or even better, at the infinity pool looking at the sea.

The poolside view room was on the expensive side, but I would still recommend staying here if you want some peace and quiet from the busy town of Mae Haad. The downside is that it costs 400 baht to get into town. The hotel does provide a free pickup and dropoff at the pier when you arrive and depart however.

This place is a must to wind down and relax .. it's views are a part of paradise .. infinity pool and jacuzzi over looks tanote bay ..our room felt like we were in a tree house over the side of a mountain ...walking distance to a small quiet beach with the best snorkelling on the island .. not for anyone wishing to party at night as getting to and from hotel at night can be pricy and difficult .. but hotel provide free taxi in at 1pm and out at 4pm for guests . To pick up provisions !! As hotel bar and restauraunt closes at 10 .. you can venture down to beach or to small tree house reggae bar for later drinks if you dare cross the bridge at night bring a torch .. over all this place is top of the list I would definetly recommend ..

First Tanote bay is the most beautiful bay on the island though a bit isolated - but that's why you come here (a taxi shuttle (2 times a day) to the other side of the island worked very well). We were in family villa close to the restaurant, the villa was fine and clean. The only issue we had, I fought a bit with an aircon, it was not completely repaired but a lady and boy at the reception were very helpful. There were two very nice swimming pool, from the one just below the restaurant it was excellent view on the whole bay. The same excellent and relaxed views were from the open restaurant where food was above average and we actually have eaten all dinners here over 1 week stay! The way to a beach about 5 min on the wooden footbridge that I recommend to get in shape again. Our family loved the beach, Diamond restaurant for lunches, excellent snorkelling and the sea. If you want to stay just at the beach, go to Tanote Bay Resort, also quite nice.

It is hard to know what to say about the staff, they are honest, friendly and helpful, but they are frankly, hopeless. There seems to be nobody is control, nobody organising, and nobody fixing all the mistakes. It is a shame because so much money has been spent on making the resort, 15 or 20 villas, another 30 rooms in a hotel-style building, 2 large pools, nice reception and gardens, and not 1 baht spent on training or wages.
The only road to the rest of the island is awful. Very steep, made of dirt and dangerous. It would take a sweaty hour to walk to the next beach, longer to the town. The resort doesn't rent motorbikes. Taxis from the main town or main beach are $15 US one-way. More if there are more people!? The resort has a free taxi twice a day, at 8.30AM and 1PM, and it is difficult to organise a taxi any other time of day.
You have to wonder about the owners of this business. They would appear to lack passion, only building this resort because all their neighbours have, not because they want to. I thought this kind of attitude had left Thailand 15 or 20 years ago but I was wrong. It is still here if you want to see what it used to be like, but I wouldn't recommend it.

This is a beautiful spot for sure. It is quite expensive by Thai standards but lacks the level of comforts you would expect at the price. It is quirky. For example....there is no potable water. The resort gives each room 2 12oz bottles of water a day. If you want more it is about 60 cents a bottle...silly. We had the same issues other have talked about with the ventilation in the bathroom. They eventually "fixed" it somewhat, but never made an offer of another room or compensation of any sort.
Koh Tao is one big rock. I think many places involve climbing to get to your destination and that is certainly true of Tanote Villa Hills. It is a vigorous walk back up from the beach, to say the least. We thought the food at the restaurant was good. The staff at the whole resort is mostly "kids" and we thought they tried their best. You are a little isolated at the resort. there is a bus that goes to town a couple of times a day, but town is a chaos...boat landings, rental agencies, shops...hawkers of all sorts. There is a lovely restaurant which serves homemade food just one "up" the road from Tanote Hills. The snorkeling on Koh Tao is fabulous.. If I were to return I think I would check out a resort closer to the beach ...(farther down the hill). Also. the island is a mecca for dive schools and diving. If you are headed there for PADI certification many of the dive schools offer accommodations for a fraction of the cost of Tanote Hills. Tanote Hills has a number of kinks to work out...none too major...but I don't think I would go there again.

Room Tip: The Villas mean a hike up to the restaurant and a hike down to the beach. The poolside rooms are lo...

We stayed in a beach bungalow which was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was basic but clean .There was a TV,fridge and a lovely verandah to sit out on.The pool is outstandingly beautiful ,looking out at an idyllic view of the bay.The beach is close by via a wooden walkway which is a bit rickety but all part of the Thai adventure! The restaurant has a lovely seating area to relax in however you need to be very patient as service there is chaotic with food arriving at the wrong times and sometimes to the wrong tables. We didn't mind this too much as the staff were really nice and trying their best.Overall a lovely place to stay.It really is a tiny bit of paradise and I wish we could have stayed longer.

We just left Tanote Villa Hill yesterday after a three night stay. The positives were beautiful poolside room, gorgeous pools and short walk to the beach. The negatives were that the newly constructed building we stayed in, while beautiful, had some serious issues with the plumbing ventilation. Our bathroom stank and we ended up spending as much time as possible outside our room! The management was unable to do anything despite our complaints. In addition, the receptionist was extremely rude, arguing with us and not helpful at all. The restaurant staff, while not rude, was never smiled. The rest of staff (manager, drivers and housekeeping) were very nice.

The snorkeling at Tanote Bay is exceptional. I have two children (7 and 9) so we didn't swim too far into the bay, but even close to shore the variety of fish was amazing! All different sizes and colors so close to us and so plentiful! The coral was very nice to see too. A word of warning though that the beach is sharp and rocky and we went to buy water shoes in town our first day as the flip flops were just not good enough.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the poolside building. Get a villa!
