I used to live on Koh Tao but now I am based in Surat Thani. I try to come to Koh Tao whenever I have a few days spare and as a matter of course I call in at the Leisure Park. The proprioter is slightly eccentric with a healthy sense of humour. I think that has to be a given when you think of how bizzarre this place is - In the middle of the Gulf of Thailand there is nowhere else to go - only back towards home. So what is there to do besides the diving? Well I can recommend the bowling on any evening especially when its wet. The mini golf is an all day and night option, the palm trees offering shade and on really really hot days there is nothing better than an ice cold beer and some golfing fun to help keep cool and while away an hour or two. If your hungry after your golf or bowling exploits then the Hacienda restaurant / lounge has a wonderful selection of Mexican food, Deep Pan Pizza and best of all marvellous home baked pies ranging from Steak & Ale to Chicken & Leek - my favourite is served with piping hot mash and peas. - So that is two of the three golden catering rules checked :)
That only leaves the toilets, which would easily win a 'best kept toilets" prize anywhere in Asia let alone Thailand or Koh Tao.
Besides the obvious atractions here there is a petanque court , pool table and I am sure there are some dominoes a dart board and other similar pub-esque entertainments available. There was a new lounge area being set up which will be a wonderful place to watch relevant football matches and other sports event coverage (well the proprioter is a Liverpool fan) or just chill.
Staff are friendly and attentive and the new peep hole mural for golf winners is reminicent of an English seaside fun fair. All thats missing is a Punch & Judy Show and donkey rides, Oh and maybe a Kebab stall out side but these are probably best left for the beaches. I came alone but this place is great for families of all ages, groups and special parties...and Steve is a great host , offering a wealth of experience and sensible advice for travellers and residents of Koh Tao when time in his hectic schedule allows, he is a keen supporter of the local eco and recycling initiatives only providing straws when requested and using recycleable glass water and soda water bottles , hopefully these ideas will catch on all over the island... sublime ... I'll be back!
