To be honest, I don't understand the other reviewers that talk about luxury. My experience was that this is by far no 5 star resort. It's much more a 3-star resort in its puberty.
We had two ocean front castaway villas on the more remote side of the beach. The location of the resort is fantastic and the beach is super nice. One of the more beautiful beaches i have seen in Thailand. The resort is only 15 minutes away from Sairee beach and the bumpy road on the way to the resort gave it some great island feeling (other reviewers did not like this road, I felt it adds positively to the athmosphere).
The villas are located directly on the beach with fantastic views on shark bay. The materials used to build these villas is very nice and fitts well into the surrounding. However, the infrastructure and the overall condition were okayish. The room was somewhat battered, the shower wasn't really cleaned (its so dark that staff might not even see that they probably haven't cleaned it in a long time). And many details in the room were lacking. For instance, the shower gel was a product with a cheap smell (mostly you get these good smelling shower gels in hotels).
The staff tried to help where they could, most with very limited english, which is okay. The one lady at the reception was very nice, and the thai smiles were there. But you could feel that most didn't really know how to behave with guests. They were insecure, often chuckling about the guests, and you could feel that quite often they didn't know how to act, like noboday had ever told them how, but they desperatly tried.
The overall infrastructure of the hotel was highly mixed. There was a smell in most part of the resort from rotten material. All over the place were some small construction zones and we got the feeling, that they couldn't cope with the size of the resort and all the many challenges such a resort brings. The pool seemed very dirty and therefore dangerous, they definitly need to improve that.
One problem we experienced were with sunbeds and privacy on the beach. There are two sunbeds located directly infront of the ocean front villas, and it seems they belong to the villa. However, if you don't reserve them eatly in the morning, other guests from the resort come and just reseve them for themselves. In addition, many other guests just place themselves directly in front of the villas, taking away all of the little privacy. In my opinion this is not acceptale at these prices. They should place more sunbeds on the middle area of the beach, and somehow clearly separate part of the beach in front of the villas. This would have been a nightmare if I would have been on a honeymoon!
The massages in the resort are very good, the two ladies are doing a great job, and the massages are even fairly priced.
We did a private snorkling trip around the island with the resort's boat and staff. The three guys on the boat did an outstanding job and showed us every great snorkling venue around the island. This trip was much more unique than going with the big diving ships, because we were on our own and mostly had the different venues for ourselves. This is a great service and fairly priced.
Overall, the island is a fantastic place, shark bay has a beautyful beach, the resort is very well located, but the hotel definitly needs improvement, even as a 3 star hotel. I had the impression that the management is highly overstraind with the size and the dimension of the resort and that they do not posses the know-how to run such a place.
Only ocean front castaway villas offer something unique.
